About Our SchoolGolborne High School is a co-educational foundation secondary school located in Golborne within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan.
Since the school first opened in January 1954 there have been two major changes to the status of the school:

The wearing of jewellery, nail varnish or make-up is not allowed in school except for watches. Nor do we allow plasters covering jewellery. No extreme hair styles or colours, including completely shaved heads or patterns shaved into the hair. No hair accessories except plain black clips or bobbles which must be used to tie back long hair in Science and Technology.

Other items:• Theuseofmobiledevicesandheadphonesarenotpermittedtobeusedinschool.• Smart watches and apple watches are not permitted in school.• Jewelleryisnotallowed.Ifastudentneedstowearapieceofjewelleryformedical
or religious reasons it must be removed for physical activity or practical lessons as this is a health and safety risk.
• Makeupisnotallowedtobeworninschool.Nonailvarnishshouldbeworn.Tattoosare not allowed.
• Hairshouldnotobscureastudent’svision.Longhairmustbetiedupinaplainblackhaircliporband.Hairaccessoriesshouldbesmall,plainandblack.Noflowersorbowsshouldbeworn.Extremehairstyles(includinghairshorterthangrade3)orunnatural colourings are not allowed. Shaved patterns in hair or eyebrows are not allowed.Ifparentsareunsureaboutwhetheranitemofuniformiscorrecttheyareadvised to check with the Head of House for their child.

Themoreparentsthattakeuptheirentitlementtofreemealsfortheirchildren,themorefundswewillgettohelpchildrenfromdisadvantagedbackgrounds.Withthismoneywecouldpayforextraclassesforgroupsofpupilsor purchase more resources to help teach our pupils.

Registeringisreallyquickandeasy–ifyouthinkyouqualify,contacttheBenefitsofficeatWigan Council 01942 489002 who will help you to register or do it online.
Ifyouwantyourchildtohaveafree,healthymealatlunchtimethat’sgreat–theywillgetthefreemeal(savingyoumorethan£400ayear),extrabenefitsandtheschoolgets£935extra.Your child will have a daily allowance of £2.20 added to their food account automatically.
Ifyoudon’twantyourchildtohavetheschoolmealstheycancontinueasnormal–aslongasyouqualifyandareregistered,theschoolstillgets£935extra.
What happens after I register?Yourchildwillreceive£2.20perdayforlunch.We operate a cashless catering system so other pupils do not identify pupils that receive a free school meal. Yourchildcanalsoaddmoneytotheiraccounttomakepurchasesfromthecanteenbeforeschooloratmorning breaktime.

Lunchtime ArrangementsAtGolborneHighSchoolweoperateanin-housecateringserviceforpupils,staffandvisitors.Inadditiontoourlunchtimecanteenserviceweprovideabreakfastand morning break service each day. Facilities are available at lunchtime for pupils to have a school dinner or a packed lunch.
PUPILS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE SCHOOL AT LUNCHTIME.
Online Payments and Cashless CateringWeoperateacashlesscanteensystem.Thismeansnomoneypassesthroughthe tills.
Pupils can add money to their account in two ways:1. Usingsecurecashpaymentmachineslocatedaroundschool.2. Usingonlinepaymentssystem–wherebyparentsaddmoneyovertheinternet
totheirchild’sschoolfoodaccount.Both systems are safe and secure and significantly cut queueing times in the canteen.
There are many benefits to a cashless system including: –• Pupilsarenotcarryingcasharoundalldayandthepotentialforlossis
reduced.• Thereisamaximumdailyspendlimitoneachchild’saccount(currently£5)to
ensure that they only spend an appropriate amount each day.• Itprovidesaconsiderablyquickerserviceandreducesqueues.• Ifyouareentitledtofreeschoolmeals(FSM)nooneisawareofthis(theFSM
dailyallowanceisautomaticallyaddedtothepupil’saccount).• Thesystemusesbiometrics.ThesysteminvolvesthecaptureofBiometric
fingerprintdatathatissecurelystoredbytheschool.Ascannerisusedonthecashpaymentmachinesandalsoatthecashregisterstorecognisethepupil’saccount.Thisdataisdestroyedwhenyourchildleavestheschoolorwhenyou instruct us to do so.
TheonlinepaymentssystemisoperatedthroughWisepay (link available on the schoolwebsite).Underthissystemaseparateusername(child’sname)andpasswordisallocatedforeachchildinschool.Ifyouhavemorethanonechildinschool you can link your accounts in the system and also change your password and username.
YoucanaccessWisePaytomakeonlinepaymentsbydebitorcreditcard.Thesystemwillbeupdatedapproximatelyevery15minutestoshownewpayments.Youronlineaccountalsohasthebenefitofallowingyoutoviewtheaccountbalance and the selection and cost of food and drink purchased each day.

The House SystemAtGolborneHighSchoolourPastoralCarecentresaroundourHousesystem.EachHouseisafamilyinitsownrightandhasitsownuniqueidentity.TheHousesystemisatthecoreofourschoolwhichputsthechildatheartofeverythingwedo.Thefamilyvaluesofrespect,togethernessandprideareinstilledineverychildthroughtheHousestructure.EachHousehasaHeadofHousewho,alongwiththeFormTutors,stayswiththechildrenthroughouttheir5yearsofHighSchool.Thismeansthateverychildandtheirextendedfamilyhas1pointofcontactwhoknowsthemwellandcanoffertargetedsupportandchallengebasedonpersonalisedknowledgeofeverychild.Thehappiness and safety of each and every child at Golborne High School is our core purpose.TheHousestructurecreatesafamilyatmosphereastherearechildrenfromeveryyeargroupineachForm.Theolderchildrenactasbuddiestotheyoungerchildren which creates a sense of security for them when they come to high school.

HOW DOES IT WORKWe have five Houses each led by a Head of House:FONTEYN - MR HINDLENNON - MISS BARRETTPICASSO - MRS STEVENSONSHAKESPEARE - MISS HIGSON WESTWOOD - MR FALCONER
Siblings are placed in the same House but siblings are not usually put in the same tutor group.
Eachtutorgrouphasapproximatelytwenty-eightstudentsmadeupfromYears7-10.
Eachtutorgroupmeetsfor20minutesat10.45ameachdaywiththeirtutor,andwiththerestoftheirHouseforanassemblytwiceaweek.Thereisastructuredtutoringprogrammeinplacecoveringcurrentaffairs,personaldevelopment,Careers,literacy/numeracy,PSHE(Circletime)and administrative tutoring tasks to check log books.
1-2-1 MENTORING SESSIONS /InterventionEachchildinatutorgroupisseenonanumberofoccasionsthroughouttheyear.Academicandpastoraldevelopmentwillbediscussedandsuccessescelebratedthroughrewardcards,pointsand communication with parents.
The House System is a strong vertical support structure, which will facilitate and promote relationships throughout the Year groups. It provides an additional strand for our young people to identify with peers, and both younger and older students for various communications.
SENIOR PREFECTS AND HOUSE CAPTAINSTheroleoftheHouseCaptainsistotakeresponsibilityfortheleadershipandorganisationoftheirHousethroughouttheforthcomingacademicyear.TherewillalsobefourSeniorPrefectsfortheschoolwhowillworkwiththeHouseCaptainsandleadtheteamofprefects.
CONTACTING YOUR CHILD’S TUTORYourfirstpointofcontactshouldbeyourchild’sHeadofHouse,howeveritisimportanttobuildarelationshipwithyourchild’stutor.Youcandothisviathelogbookorbytelephone,but please remember that in any large school it will not be possible to speak to the tutor immediately.Howeverwearecommittedtomakecontactwithin24hourstoensurethatanyconcerns are dealt with promptly to alleviate and worry.
Youcanliaisewithyourchild’stutorviayourchild’sLogbook.AlternativelyyoucanphoneschoolorcallintoReceptionwhowillaskforamemberoftheSeniorLeadershipTeamtospeak to you immediately.

When a pupil struggles to maintain the standards we arelookingfor,wefeelitisourroleinsupportingthemtogetbackontrack.AtGolborne,wehaveagraduatedresponse to behaviour that is fair and consistent whenitfallsbelowtheacceptablestandards.Theschooloperatesabehaviourpointsrecord.Ifapupilaccumulates a certain number of points they may be putonlogbookreporttotheirformtutor.Thishelpsto monitor the lessons in which the issues may be occurring.Thisisdoneafterfullyconsultingwithparentsandajoinedupapproachistaken.IfthebehaviourescalatesapupilmayreporttotheirHOHwithagreenlogbook.Againatthispointtheparentwouldbekeptfully involved and be able to see the completed log book on a daily basis.

OurongoingworkwiththeengineeringcompanyMurphy’shasenabledourpupilsto see how the team have constructed and built our Wetlands area.
We have recently organised our third FamilyFunDaywhichwasverywellattended by members of the local community as well as local companies who providedmanyoftheprizesanddonationson the day. We also have close links with theNewtonLeWillowsRotaryclubandhave had success with them in a recent photography competition.
Charity WorkWe are passionate about supporting a range of charities each year. Recent fundraisingeventsincludebakesales,non-uniformdaysandrafflestoraisefundsandawareness for a range of different charities suchasAgeConcern,MacmillanCancerSupport,MuscularDystrophy,GuideDogsfortheBlindandTheBrickWigan.

ThestandardadmissionnumberfortheschoolfromSeptember2016is180pupilsforeachyeargroup.
Wheretheschoolreceivesmoreapplicationsthanplacesavailable,thefollowing admission criteria will be applied once places have first been allocated to pupils who have a statement of special educational needs which names the school: 1. Looked after children and previously looked after children. Previouslylookedafterchildrenarechildrenwhowerelookedafter,butceased
to be so because they were adopted (or became subject to a residence order orspecialguardianshiporder).Applicationsforpreviouslylookedafterchildrenmust be supported with appropriate evidence i.e. a copy of the adoption order.
2. ChildrenwhoappeartotheGoverningBodyoftheschooltohavebeeninstate careoutsideofEnglandandceasedtobeinstatecareasaresultofbeing adopted. Note:Achildisregardedashavingbeeninstatecareinaplaceoutsideof Englandiftheywereaccommodatedbyapublicauthority,areligious organisation or any other provider of care whose sole purpose is to benefit society.Applicationsmustbesupportedwithappropriateevidencethatthechild has been adopted from state care.

Before the start of the new academic year a full induction programme for the parents ofnewpupilswillbeheldinschoolandallparentswillbeexpectedtoattend.

betweenGolborneHighSchool,LowtonJuniorandInfantSchool,Wigan
LeisureandCultureTrust(WLCT),TheCo-operativeCollege,UCLanandWigan&LeighCollege.ItisanEducationalco-
operativeformedin2010.WeraiseawarenessoftheTrustthroughassembliesandworkthroughschoolandwithourotherTrust
partners.
Overtheyearsourpartnershiphasgonefromstrengthtostrengthwithsignificantinterestfromoutsideorganisations.Abusiness
strategy with objectives is updated annually and partners contribute time or provide learning activities.
WehaveTrustmeetingseachhalftermandthepupilsmeetfortnightly.Wefollowco-operativevaluesandwehaveachair,vicechair and other roles within the group. We have raised a significant
amountofmoneyovertheyears,forexamplethrougheventssuchasaFashioneventandabagpackourSpanishexchangeschoolarefrequentvisitorsandareinterestedinourTrustwork.TheschoolbasedinMalagahasakitchengardensoweliketo
exchangeideasaboutourprojects.
Our WetlandsTherearemanysuccessestodatebutourmostambitiousprojectisthecreationofaWetlandsonaderelictplayingarea.Through
engagingwithcommunitycontacts,alocalconstructioncompany,Murphy’s,haslandscapedthearea.Expertisehasalsobeen
providedbyWLCTonthedesignofthesite.StudentsfromWigan&LeighCollegehavebuiltfencingandweplantobuildahideinthenearfuture.InordertoputsometreesonourwetlandweorderedsomehedgesfromtheWoodlandTrustandsomeAlder
treeswerealsodonatedfromtheThreeSisters.
GolborneVillageCommitteeareactivelyinvolvedwiththeWetlands which is used for the delivery of learning activities that will benefit the lives and change attitudes of many local people. We have recently had delivery of a bird hide which was funded
through‘TheDeal’.
