Evidence can be found of substantial palace on Palatine Hill
mid 8th century BC
The trad. date for founding of Rome by Romulus = 753BC, however it appears Rome was not truly a city until late 7th cent. BC. The Cloaca Maxima (the Great Sewer) was built
at this time – is still in use today!!!
At first separate
villages on hills (esp. Palatine,
Quirinal) then join together c. 625BC
Archaeological evidence suggests clearing of old huts, foundation of city late 7th/early 6th
cent BC – a pebbled forum and carefully laid out sewers have been discovered
Etruscan style tombs, Etruscan bucchero pottery and Greek vases are also found in Rome at this time suggesting trade with the north – or
Etruscan domination of Rome?
Writing appears c600BC – Archaic Latin but written in Etruscan alphabet,
developed from the Greeks
