These days we may have the impression that it is very easy to become a pop star. Nothing of the kind; you need the right songs and a good voice but you also need to be a great performer—and it is clearly an advantage if you can dance well. To be successful you have to be a special kind of person, anyway. People will only notice you if you have a different look but at the same time you need to keep your own identity. All those long hours travelling between interviews and photo shots will make you very tired, but you must always be warm and friendly because if people do not like you, you won’t get very far. You must be super confident because you will be meeting lots of new people regularly—from interviews in journals to chatting in television shows. It is your job to sell yourself. Your attitude is really important. You have to want to be famous and to be prepared to work extremely hard and it is not going to be easy. Of course, there is always the risk to be turned into a marketing product; that is why it is so important to have a strong personality and supporting people around. The figure of the manager is also essential because he or she is the one who is going to control your career and decide when and where you are going to appear.

B. Read the following extract and answer the questions below: Robin Hood is a legendary hero who lived in Sherwood forest, in Notingham, with his band of followers. Stories about him and his adventures began to appear in the fourteenth century, but the facts behind the legend are uncertain. One writer thinks Robin was born in 1160, at a time when there were many robbers living in the woods, stealing from the rich, but only in self-defense.

Everyone knows that Robin Hood robbed the rich to give to the poor. He chose to be an outlaw but he had his own ideas about right and wrong. He fought against injustice and tried to give ordinary people a share of the riches owned by people in authority and the Church. He had many qualities: he was a great sportsman, a great fighter and was very good with his bow and arrow.

To provide themselves with some food, Robin and his men hunted the King’s deer and many days were spent drinking and playing games. His main enemy was the Sheriff of Notingham, who was always trying to capture Robin but never managed to do it.
