3.2 How ex-barrier works

General information The ex-barrier contains intrinsically safe circuits. The intrinsically safe circuits serve the purpose of operating intrinsically safe components, such as the sensors, within areas with danger of explosion and of securely separating them from the non-hazardous area in which the SITRANS DA400 is located.

Functional principle Ex-barriers limit the energy supplied from circuits that are not intrinsically safe to intrinsically safe amounts, so that an explosion in the area with danger of explosion is not caused by sparks or by thermal effects such as hot surfaces. The non-intrinsically-safe circuits are galvanically connected to the intrinsically safe circuits. The laws, regulations and guidelines applicable to the use or planned use of the product must be observed.

Connecting and commissioning 44.1 Connection safety information

Warning Electrical connection in hazardous zones with explosive atmospheres Connection and commissioning involving areas with danger of explosion may only be carried out by personnel specially qualified for this task. The national regulations and laws for areas with danger of explosion valid in your country must be observed for electrical connection. For example, in Germany these are: • Operational safety regulations. • Directive for the installation of electrical systems in areas with danger of explosion DIN

EN 60079-14 (previously VDE 0165, T1). The information on the accompanying EC-type examination certificate TÜV 05 ATEX 2917X must be observed.

Warning Adverse ambient conditions The ex-barrier is constructed according to protection type IP20. Under adverse ambient conditions such as the presence of splashing water or dirt, the ex-barrier must be protected according to its protection type.

Connecting and commissioning 4.1 Connection safety information

Ex-barrier for Diagnostics Unit SITRANS DA400 4-2 Operating Instructions, 11/2005, A5E00718300-01

Warning Explosion protection The ex-barrier may not be connected and operated in an area with danger of explosion, since some of its circuits are intrinsically safe, but others are not. Intrinsically safe and not intrinsically safe circuits are galvanically connected to each other. The ex-barrier, the SITRANS DA400 diagnostic unit and the sensor form one measuring unit. Only intrinsically safe sensors of type 7MJ2000-1B*00 may be connected. The ex-barrier is constructed so that the connection of intrinsically safe circuits for Zone 1 and of the EEx ib type of protection is possible. When interconnecting the non-intrinsically-safe input circuits In1 and In2 of the ex-barrier with non-intrinsically-safe devices, the maximum permissible supply voltage Um of these circuits must be observed.

Warning Earthing The blue terminals (Out1 and Out2) of the ex-barrier are circuits in the "intrinsically safe" type of protection according to EN 50020. Only earth-free resources may be connected to these terminals (41, 42, 51, 52). It must be ensured that a potential equalization exists between the ex-barrier and the sensor; in other words, between the areas with and without a danger of explosion. The necessary connection for the potential equalization must be done with a cable shield on the earthing terminal (M4). The cross-section of the connection must be at least 4 mm² for one copper wire. This connection for the potential equalization must be secured to a high degree and be maintained according to the norm EN 60079-14 Sec. 12.2.2.3/special case b.
