We have a lot to cover this month, starting with two burning questions on my mind lately: 1. How do you solve a problem like Maria measure success? 2. How do you take a cloud and pin it down manage your Return on Investment? I know that was awful. You didn’t try to sing it, did you? Instead, I hope you paused and thought about how you might personally answer those questions, specifically as they relate to EWI. I’d like to use this opportunity to remind you of all that EWI offers and hope that you will employ those benefits toward your own success. Remember, EWI of San Diego is an “umbrella” under which many organizations and companies are represented. If our co-workers and employees don’t know what our fellow EWI of San Diego members are offering, then we ALL need to do better. Likewise, unless you are offering a direct link or promocode for tracking, how can you be sure you aren’t seeing a return, particularly from an EWI of San Diego referral? I would encourage you to share details, flyers and opportunities, with or without discounts. These offers can go in newsletters, through email offers and our social media sites. Message from the President Vanessa Davis | Broadway/San Diego

Hello, This is a long one, so unwrap your favorite piece of candy and let's jump in! We have a lot to cover this month, starting with two burning questions on my mind lately: 1. How do you solve a problem like Maria measure

success? 2. How do you take a cloud and pin it down manage

your Return on Investment?

I know that was awful. You didn’t try to sing it, did you? Instead, I hope you paused and thought about how you might personally answer those questions, specifically as they relate to EWI. I’d like to use this opportunity to remind you of all that EWI offers and hope that you will employ those benefits toward your own success.

Communicating Products and Services… Are you communicating your products and services with EWI of San Diego members? Remember, EWI of San Diego is an “umbrella” under which many organizations and companies are represented. If our co-workers and employees don’t know what our fellow EWI of San Diego members are offering, then we ALL need to do better. Likewise, unless you are offering a direct link or promocode for tracking, how can you be sure you aren’t seeing a return, particularly from an EWI of San Diego referral? I would encourage you to share details, flyers and opportunities, with or without discounts. These offers can go in newsletters, through email offers and our social media sites. Make sure to remind EWI of San Diego Reps when your special offers are also available to their friends, families and co-workers. EWI of San Diego has a long reach –let’s use it! MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Vanessa Davis | Broadway/San Diego [Continued from Page 1]

Leadership… Leadership, or as my mother would call out, “quit being bossy” (she was is right, I was am bossy). But it did take a while before I learned to hone that sass into something that resembled actual leadership. If you are looking for ways to develop professionally, really consider EWI’s Professional Development Webinars. They’re hosted by corporate, they’re monthly; they’re free and they’re available to all employees in your company…Let me repeat that: They’re monthly; they’re free and they’re available to all employees in your company. Last month we heard from Professor Doug Ross of Franklin University, as he discussed “How to Network and Market Yourself Effectively,” and this month we will hear from Ruth Mannschreck, from Shoreline Strategies, as she hosts a webinar titled: “Yes, You Can Lead Where You are Planted.” This is a great opportunity to call in or log on and listen to great speakers, all while enjoying your lunch. I hope you will make a point to tune in! Board Service... If you are looking to contribute to our chapter’s success, gain executive experience, polish your resume, jazz up your LinkedIn, or simply spend an additional night a month hanging out with some fun gals, board service might be for you. Get behind the scenes and take part into what makes EWI of San Diego such a success. Get involved with decisions and help shape EWI. There are many positions and all of them are created to support and complement success for each other and the chapter. Memberzone… Have you logged on to Memberzone yet? It’s a great EWI resource center and a wonderful way to connect with other members and other chapters. It’s ewiconnectut.memberzone.com/login and if you need your name and password, contact Kristine Pepine at the corporate office: [email protected] Memberzone is also where you will find past professional development “Webinars.” Just look for webinar archives. Community Engagement… I think it’s fair to say that our Scholarship and Literacy Initiatives are among our most popular with EWI of San Diego tenants. If this is true for you, consider how you might get involved in the success of this program. Are you available to be a judge? Can you serve on the Fundraising Committee? Does your organization offer grants? Can you spend time helping researching goods and services that might be donated so they can be raffled

for money that can be used towards EWI of San Diego initiatives? If this is one of your favorite things about EWI of San Diego, what are you doing about it? (Social) Networking… You might be in EWI of San Diego for networking opportunities, including social networking. First, and the most obvious, is our meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. We know that work, family and other priorities can spread our free time quite thin, but if you aren’t attending meetings, I hope you will reconsider. It’s a great place to come together socially, and try a new venue or restaurant and hear from dynamic speakers from our own community on various topics. Another way to get to know other members in smaller, more intimate settings is our “Lunch Bunches.” We have lunch bunches Downtown, Mid-City and North County for easy convenience. Further, if you have extra seats at a Sponsorship table to fill or hosting an open house, consider inviting chapter members. It’s a great way to form some fun and long lasting friendships! Leadership Annual Meeting and Conference… Everything that makes EWI great, comes together in one place at the same time at LCAM; Leadership training and professional development; granting scholarships to students who have faced incredible adversity; board service development; dynamic speakers and coaches; and a chance to network with EWI members from across the US and Canada. I can’t recommend attending LCAM enough. This year it will be September 21-23, in Grapevine, TX, and promises to be time well spent. Registration begins mid-April and I would really like to see San Diego show a strong presence. Community, Career and Connections…. EWI’s tenants are CAREER, COMMUNITY and CONNECTIONS. I hope I have been able to highlight a few ways to increase your participation, which might increase your ‘return’ in whatever it is that draws you to EWI. We all invest time and money in EWI of San Diego, together, so let’s work as chapter, a board, an organization, and as friends, to really make sure we are maximizing our success…however we each define it. PS, don’t forget, April 18 is our Executive Appreciation Luncheon at San Diego Convention Center. Hope to see you there! This month in EWI of San Diego history, the City of San Diego proclaimed the day of April 29, 2010 Executive Women International Day in San Diego in celebration of our chapter being chartered in San Diego in April 1950. It’s beginning to look a lot like EWI Day…

What is at the top of your bucket list, or what were you most excited to check off your list? My current project on the personal front is helping, encouraging (and pushing when necessary) my 17 year old daughter's quest to find the right college. It's an interesting process, filled with challenges for us both. As I write this, we're traveling the east coast, visiting campuses. Who is your role model? My better self. Is that too weird? I was lucky to have a lot of good role models when I was in my twenties, but now I'm more interested in becoming the best possible version of me, rather than how I measure up to others. What’s the best business advice you received? Deal with your own stuff' first. If you haven't achieved everything you want to achieve, then examine the ingrained beliefs that are holding you back. Get a coach. Give yourself a break. You have 2 hours of free time. What are you doing? Red wine and chocolate are high on my list. But so is taking a brisk walk in a beautiful setting. Or planning my next trip - I love to

What is at the top of your bucket list, or what were you most excited to check off your list? I am proud to say I have managed to complete most of it. I have skydived on my 60th birthday with my grandkids watching. I've been to every continent except Antarctica and I’ve run my own business for 39 years. As I look ahead, my bucket list now includes enjoying a fun and happy retirement and spending time with my husband and grandkids and lots more traveling.

travel. Or reading. Or taking a class of some kind. Or planning the next element of my home remodeling

project - I need to pick exterior paint colors. Ok, whoever has 2 hours free? That's just crazy talk.

Who is your role model? My role model was my great grandmother who came to America from England at the age of 13 alone to take a job as a house servant and eventually ended up owning many row houses in New York on her own. She would buy one house subdivide it into three units and rent out two until she saved enough to buy another and so on and so on. She was one of the few women land owners of her day. What’s the best business advice you received? Do you, like you do well, but don't try to be all things to all people or you won't do anything well. Find your niche market and build on it. You have 2 hours of free time. What are you doing? With a full-time business, many volunteer activities and 16 grandchildren, I find any downtime I have to be perfectly spent napping. Especially on a Sunday afternoon.
