9 June 2014EVS - experienced users

Fang LouLTI/LMSWelcome to this workshop led by the ITEAM on how to get started with EVS, electronic voting systems and their use within learning, teaching and assessment.

UH has chosen to subscribe to the company TurningPoint as its software provider. We will refer to TP throughout the session and provide the link for you to download it to your computer. We will also introduce you to the main features to help you get started.

303Why we use EVS?Encourage active student participationEngage with the whole classCheck and capture student knowledgeformative/summativeGive prompt feedbackGive quiet students a voice including international studentsAdd interest and fun UH Assessment-for-Learning Principles, 2012Engages students with the assessment criteriaSupports personalised learningEnsures feedback leads to improvementFocuses on student developmentStimulates dialogueConsiders student and staff effort

In briefEVS relates to Chickering and Gamson principles for good practice in UG Education

Uses active learning techniques. (a.k.a. "Encourages active learning") Gives prompt feedback Respects diverse talents and ways of learning

Encourages contacts between students and faculty. Develops reciprocity and cooperation among students. Emphasizes time on task. Communicates high expectations. 4Share good practiceSummative: HSW: 3 EVS tests worth 50% of a module gradeBiosciences: Drop quizzes, 5 in a single module and 10 in a double module 60% counts, 10% of a module gradeRead Q & A during votingWhat do students think?EEVS project survey 590 students, 2011-12

EVS had highly positive (perceived) impact on students learning and satisfaction Responding to questions made me think about the course material (84%)EVS provided me with an immediate check of understanding (83%) Using the EVS allowed problem areas to be identified (75%) I enjoy using EVS in my learning (71%)

Summative use of EVS has in some cases created unnecessary tension, anxiety and indicated inadequacies of the technology for formal examinations. Not given enough time for answering questions Not testing how easily you can use device but how much you know about the subjectShould be able to cancel answers as it is possible to press a wrong button accidentallyUnable to amend your answers once the question has moved onUsing the handsets for a test , made the test feel less important, almost gimmicky

In brief6Conditional Branching:Are you familiar with how to check and change channel number?YesNo

Checking and changing channelsPut the receiver USB inYou will see the channel No. on the Start page

Checking and changing channelsIf that number is not what you want, click the number, so you can change it:

RF LCDXRNXTWhat do the different handsets do?RF LCD basic MCQ function, designed so that participants receive visual confirmation of input. The LCD screen displays response selected, channel setting and battery life.

XR has homework function which allows test to be taken at home and answers saved for submission when in contact with host computer. Also has alpha and numeric entry.

NXT has self-paced function (use with Turning Key software) and can take text essay responses, fill in the blanks, numeric response, single or multiple response. 22

Student informationHandsets are issued to students free of charge

Replacement handsets carry a charge equivalent to the loss of an ID card. N.B. student may be marked as a debtor if payment outstanding

Students are responsible for replacing the handset battery

Giving handsets to another student or being in possession of anothers handset is considered an academic offence equivalent to cheating (like loaning an ID card)

Further help is available on the EVS page within Studynet (via EVS search on home page or go via LTI site). Put link on the programme page!

23Some good practice points when using EVS.Let the teaching approach lead the use of technology not the other way roundAlways start with a test slide, read out the questions and answers in full and tell the students when polling is opened and when it is about to closeConsider inclusivity and accessibilityWhen using summatively, ensure expectations clear and test conditions implementedQuick check:Always start in TurningPoint programme (which will run PowerPoint). Make sure PowerPoint is not open.Make sure the presentation is not in simulated modeHave some spare handsets with youMake sure students know how to use the handsetsCheck everyone is on the right channel Run a test slide to check everything is workingRun the interactive session. Only use a compatible presenter cardIf saving session data in a teaching room save to a memory stick 9.Re-set the session after saving ready for next time

Run the session through Turning PointChoose your participant listRun the sessionOnce all the questions have been answered click on save session save to your documents

Click on save session on the TP toolbar and give it an appropriate name.- this will automatically be saved in TP file on your computer unless you state otherwise- if you are in a teaching room you must remember to save the data to your memory stick.- it is useful to save your TP file to check which questions students found most difficult
