*Hardy Weinberg Theorem/equilibrium- states that both allele and genotype frequencies in a population remain constantthat is, they are in equilibriumfrom generation to generation

This theorem is valid only if certain conditions are met:1. The population is very large. (The effect of chance on changes in allele frequencies ishereby greatly reduced).2. Matings are random. (Individuals show no mating preference for a particular phenotype)3. There are no net changes in the gene pool due to mutation, that is, mutation from A toa must be equal to mutation from a to A.4. There is no migration of individuals into and out of the population.5. There is no selection; all genotypes are equal in reproductive success.

The Hardy Weinberg equilibrium is impossible in nature. Genetic equilibrium is an ideal state that provides a baseline to measure genetic change against.

You don't need to know how to use this equation to solve problems for the test.

The frequency of the possible combinations of alleles (AA, Aa, and aa) in this population is expressed as:p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1p + q = 1
