ContentsIntroduction

Welcome to our third issue of Everything Portishead. Once again it has been a very busy month and a big thank you to all who contributed to this issue. It was great to meet people at the council open day and we look forward to developing our magazine with as many people and organisations in the community as possible.

We would like to welcome Wendy Watkins to our team who is well known for her tireless work on the Carnival. Wendy is contributing editorial to the magazine as she is very passionate about Portishead and the community spirit. We also have the pleasure of working with Sue Anderson who will continue to write the Gardeners Corner and we would like to thank her for the support and effort she has shown with the articles written.

Remember, at Everything Portishead we want your input, so please email or telephone us with any ideas you have. We are particularly keen to hear from residents who have been in the town and seen it change over the years. We would like to build up a history of the town and any story or pictures you may be able to offer would be much appreciated.

Please remember to mention Everything Portishead when responding to any advertisements or company listings. It is very important for our advertisers to be aware of any success our magazine brings them.

With best wishes

Mathew Rowbotham and John CantCo-editors

Around Town

September was another action packed month in Portishead with numerous events and activities taking place. The beginning of the new academic year not only saw all the children go back to school but also lots of extracurricular activities start up in the town, from sports groups to drama classes.

The Portishead Town Council open day was a roaring success. Held at Somerset Hall it provided an opportunity for residents to meet and get to know their town councillors. In addition, more than 50 community groups held stalls allowing the public to discover more about some of the great activities available to them in Portishead.

A charity and craft fair also at Somerset Hall saw representation from numerous charities including Arthritis Research, Guide Dogs for the Blind and Help for Heroes. The fair was well supported and organisers hope to arrange more of the same in the future.

Many people in the town picked up tips on how to save money, save energy and help save the planet at the energy day, organised by Transition Portishead. The event on September 11 focused on how to reduce the carbon footprint of people’s homes. September also saw the welcoming to Portishead, of Gordano School new head teacher Gary Lewis.

Mr Lewis, former deputy head of Chew Valley School says he is has no big plans to make changes at Gordano, but wants to ensure that learning is exciting, enjoyable and memorable for all pupils.Gordano School plays a major role in the Portishead community and we wish Mr Lewis all the very best in his new role.

Shop Locally

Portishead has a vast amount of independent retailers which gives the town variety and individuality. It is also one of the few remaining places in North Somerset where car parking is still free, something the residents and traders are proud of and fiercely want to protect.

Even though there are several shopping ranks in different parts of the town, the High Street is still viewed as the town centre. In the centre of the High Street is Freemans, a long established television shop that has been trading for more than 40 years.

The size of the shop is very deceiving. You enter the main showroom, from the double windowed shop front entrance and find yourself surrounded by a wide range of televisions. From this main showroom, the store stretches back, showing off yet more televisions along with an array of recorders, hi-fi’s, radios and accessories.

Brands include Panasonic, Sony and Linsar. Then to the rear of the shop Freemans has its own workshop where a skilled team carries out on site repairs. With highly competitive prices and superb after sales service, Freemans offers the complete solution catering for the home entertainment needs of the Portishead community. Liam Sagar and Jason Bamfield lead the team of highly attentive

customer service staff, who not only know their products, but are dedicated to providing a high standard, personal service for their customers.

People who still travel out of town in search of goods and services are advised to compare the prices of goods being sold closer to home, before jumping in their cars to join the traffic congestion.

There are some real gems like Freemans in Portishead High Street where they strive to keep prices competitive and offer customer service second to none.Sales manager Jason Bamfield confirmed:

“At Freemans there is always someone on hand to offer advice. Every single one

of our customers is highly valued, whether they spend

£1 or £1,000.”

Portishead traders are keen to overcome misconceptions that local shopping is more expensive or offers less choice. Shops in the town sell a wide range of great products at competitive prices and work hard to create distinctive experiences for shoppers. The way to keep the variety of independent traders in Portishead High Street is to use them. Please support your local community and keep shopping locally!

Where to Walk

The October walk allows you to take in some of the best views in Portishead. You may also want to take in some of the wildlife and history of the town. Parts of the walk are steep and muddy so please take care.

Start at the Lake Grounds café and follow the path past the lake towards Battery Point. To the left of the outdoor swimming pool you need to follow the steps up the hill. Stop here and take in the views across the Severn Estuary, there are still plenty of benches on which to sit and enjoy the tranquility.

Continue walking up the hill to the right hand side of the wood, here you will see a sign introducing the East Wood and Battery Point nature reserve. Read the sign to learn a little more about the history, wildlife and geology. Follow the path through the woods until you reach the steps on your right, proceed up the steps until you get to a road, cross the road with care and continue up the second set of steps. As the path meanders through the wood, take a note of the foliage and wildlife you can see and hear. Follow this path without deviation until you go downhill and reach another road (Pier Road). Turn left and walk towards the Royal Inn, at this point you may wish to stop for refreshment.

When you are ready, continue down Woodlands Road, again there is a viewpoint with information which is worth a read. On a sunny day you have a fantastic view of the Severn Bridge and Wales.

Continue along the road with care as there is no path, you will reach the wood path on your right after passing all the houses. Enter the wood and follow the path until you can see the field on your right. Walk down the field towards Battery Point. Follow the steps back down towards the Lake. Take this opportunity to spend time walking around the Lake Grounds and feeding the ducks until you reach the starting point!

Charity of the Month

Until 1992, a rescue service was provided by Portishead Yacht and Sailing Club. During their 25 years of service, they launched 228 times, assisting 404 people and saving 34 lives. When the service ended, locals felt so strongly that a sea rescue was needed in this area, they drew up a petition and appealed to the RNLI to set up a lifeboat station in Portishead.

When the RNLI said this was not viable, the Portishead Lifeboat Trust was set up by a group of local people. The Trust was established in

This month’s charity of the month is the Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat. This is a vital service provided by volunteers from our community and funded entirely by donations and bequests.

1995 and within a year, Portishead Lifeboat was fully paid for and put on station. Within 48 hours, she was launched on her first service call. The boathouse and slip-way are located at Sugar Loaf, adjacent to the Yacht and Sailing Club. The Portishead Lifeboat Trust is a registered charity with a mission statement “To save and protect the lives of the general public, in particular by the provision of a Lifeboat in the Severn Estuary centred on Portishead.”

As an independent lifeboat, the trust is not eligible for lottery funding and does not receive funding from the RNLI, although it does provide invaluable assistance with operational and logistical matters. The Trust receives generous support, not only from the local community but also from people across the country. For that we should be thankful for, as it could not operate without the continual support.

Home cooked meals, a fine selection of ales, wines and spirits and a fabulous view, that just about sums up the Royal Inn. This is where old meets new in the town. The

Royal is situated close to the Port Marine development and the historic building couldn’t be more different from the new, modern homes. The charming building, built in 1930 provides a large dining area, welcoming bar and first floor function room. In addition, the garden terrace provides an excellent spot from which to enjoy panoramic views of the Severn estuary. Visit www.theroyalinnportishead.co.uk to find out more.

Royal Inn

The White Hart is a traditional, family run village pub in Weston-in-Gordano. There is a nice, relaxed, friendly atmosphere in this venue that has managed to

combine a modern stylish look with a bit of nostalgia. Old photos adorn the walls giving an insight to the village history. The food is classic pub food, produced and presented to a high standard and complimented by a wide range of well kept ales and wines.

Located on West Hill, the Royal Oak is one of those true local pubs. It has a spacious bar where on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings locals

enjoy live music, karaoke or a disco. You can also play skittles and darts here. The adjacent lounge offers a quieter place to sit and have a drink and then further on again, there is a family or meeting room. The Oak boasts the best Sunday carvery in town and is also popular for its cut price, credit crunch lunches on Thursdays and Fridays.

Child’s Play

Portishead has a vast range of parent and child groups which cater for babies through to primary school aged children. These range from toddler groups and soft play to music, dance and drama classes.

The old St Barnabas Primary School in West Hill now houses Portishead’s Children’s Centre which provides local services for families and holds information about other groups that operate in the town.Services at the centre include health visitor drop-in, parenting support and ante and post natal groups.

Music with Mummy and Jolly Babies.Former professional opera singer Eleanor Dunn-Sims, who lives in Portishead, has joined her two main loves together, music and young children.

Having looked at a wide range of musical schemes available for pre-schoolers, Eleanor chose the award winning music education programme for babies and pre-school children, Music with Mummy and Jolly Babies. Classes are professionally prepared specifically for different age groups, teaching basic aspects of music, while having lots of fun. The different props and range of songs and instruments make classes a rich learning environment.

It is now generally accepted that early exposure to music, and especially singing, greatly enhances young children’s development. These small fun classes are an excellent way to introduce music to young children, and both health visitors and speech therapists have been very impressed with their positive effects.

Eleanor has classes on Tuesday mornings at St Joseph’s Church Hall in West Hill and on Friday mornings at the Trinity Community Hall in Marjoram Way. New Wednesday classes will be starting soon. For more details call 847083.

About Portishead

E V E R Y T H I N G

The image on the front cover, which was kindly donated by MDH Photography, shows Battery Point. This point is the most northerly tip of Portishead and overlooks the Bristol Channel. It is a great place to sit and watch the boats as they pass by, the ships come so close you almost feel you can touch them.

Battery Point was so named after a succession of gun batteries. Defences have been positioned on Battery Point for many years dating back to Roman times. The most recent were anti aircraft guns to protect the docks in the second world war. The Luftwaffe used the Severn estuary to guide them to their target.

The lighthouse, which is located at the point, was given approval to be built by the estates and general purposes committee in 1930. The tower was constructed very quickly and was listed by

a survey from March 1931, Chance Brothers of Smethwick were the builders.

The lighthouse is now managed and maintained by the Bristol Port Company.

A bell, which weighs two tonnes, used to hang in the lighthouse and was removed 12 years ago due to concerns about the strength of the structure. The bell which was once used to warn sailors of poor weather conditions is now being returned to the town thanks to the perseverance of two residents. Carol Thomas and Annette Hennessy tracked down the bell and after in depth negotiations have secured its homecoming.

The Town Council has agreed to take ownership of the bell and the search is now on to find a suitable site from which to display it.

Health and Wellbeing

Jayne Leaker, a personal trainer, qualified nutritionist and co-owner of The Fitness Hub in Portishead talked to us about health and wellbeing.

“The pressures of work and family life can leave people feeling there is little time left to fit in any kind of exercise. Living life in the fast lane and trying to fit so much in to every single day can take its toll. Many of us blame being too busy for not shopping sensibly. Instead of buying and preparing fresh, wholesome and healthy foods, many people too readily grab tv dinners, fast foods and take-a-ways.”

Taking that first step towards a more healthy lifestyle can be the most difficult, continues Jayne. First of all it’s worth thinking about what you gain from regular exercise, making even a partial improvement to your fitness can make a huge difference.Physical inactivity is a risk factor for coronary heart disease. To be blunt, if you don’t exercise, you dramatically increase your risk of dying from a heart attack.Being physically active can bolster good mental health and help you to manage stress, anxiety and even depression.

We all know that regular exercise can help you achieve and maintain an ideal weight. This can be important in managing many health conditions, as well as make you feel happier about your appearanceExercise helps strengthen bones and muscles and different exercises help with all sorts of health niggles, such as digestion, poor posture and sleeplessness.

The Hub Fitness Centre in Kestrel Court offers fun fitness classes for all the family ranging from boxercise and pilates to body jam and even pole dancing.

There has never been a time when we have been more informed about how to keep healthy and take care of ourselves. Gyms, exercise classes, weight control groups and sports organisations are everywhere you turn these days. So why are so many people overweight and unfit?

People of Portishead

20 www.everythingportishead.co.ukE V E R Y T H I N G

How long have you lived in Portishead? Since I was 4 years old. Even though my parents are not originally from Portishead, I still consider myself a true Portishead girl. Where were you educated? In those days it was known as Slade Road School but it was Portishead Primary, which has now moved to new premises in Station Road. I then went to Gordano, moving on to Weston Technical College for A’levels before taking a degree at Northumbria University. I took a post graduate diploma in journalism whilst working at the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. Do you have any family and/or pets?I live with my Mum and my Gran and our dog LuLu. My Grandma will be 101 years old in November, which is I believe, due to all the love and care my mum has given her over the years. I also have a brother called Farrel who lives in Portishead with his girlfriend Sam. What are your favourite places in Portishead? Because I have a dog, my two favourite places are the walk along the cliffs between Portishead and Clevedon and the nature reserve just off Sheepway. I also love the Lake Grounds and the open air pool. What are your favourite past times? As a weather presenter, I work shifts which can limit my recreational activities. I love walking LuLu, enjoy going to Bikram Yoga, keeping fit and going to music festivals. Some of my time is taken up making public appearances and of course there’s the carnival to organise. Is there anything you’d like to see improve in Portishead, if so what?I’d love to see the railway up and running, it would make a massive difference. I’d also like to see a venue where DJ’s and bands could play gigs to large audiences.

Many of you will know Jemma from our TV screens as Points West’s weather presenter and also for her part as co-organiser of Portishead’s annual carnival. Either way, Jemma is a passionate and active member of her community.

An interview with BBC weather girl Jemma Cooper

Question of the monthWhat should I do to keep my cat safe and happy around Guy Fawkes night? People seem to enjoy fireworks for several days around 5th November, not just on one night.

By following the suggestions we have given, we can try to help your cat stay safe and happy during this time of year.

Try to plan ahead, and prepare how you can • help your pet. Bear in mind whether you will be going out for the evening.Ensure your cat is safely inside, and secure • any escape routes such as cat flaps, door & windows. If your cat has a favourite hiding place where • they will feel most secure, allow them access to it and leave them alone. Try not to comfort them or punish them as it may only confirm that there is something to be afraid of.Ignore their fearful behaviour, stay calm and • act normally.Make sure your cat is microchipped, if they • do escape a frightened, confused animal can easily get lost. The use of a plug-in Feliway diffuser, which • releases calming pheromones, will help with their sense of security. Use it in the room they spend most of their time in, for at least 48 hours before the festivities.

Much of this advice can also help if you are a dog owner, but ask your vet for any further help or if you have any questions as there may be other ways to help an anxious or fearful pet.

Did you know...

Did you know there is a recruitment company in Portishead?

When Jeanette Hingley and Karen Watkins were made redundant from a national recruitment agency they decided to combine their many years of experience and establish Berry Rowan Consultants. In spite of the difficult times in the employment market they have gone from strength to strength and have just celebrated their first birthday in June.

Many people believed it was a bold move to begin a recruitment company during these difficult times, however with their excellent customer service and a passion for what they believe in they are succeeding in the face of adversity.

Jeanette has lived in Portishead for six years and is a member of the Chamber of Commerce. She is keen to promote local business and become actively involved in the Portishead community.

The partners had the opportunity to move their business into Bristol but chose to remain loyal to their existing customer base and now service clients in Somerset and North Somerset. Jeanette says “We like to meet with our clients and get to know what their needs are and establish exactly which candidates are suitable for their circumstances. We are proud to have already recruited for a number of Portishead based companies in the last year”

Their strap line says it all “more than just recruitment” If you are considering recruiting or would like some Human Resources advice why not give them a call 01275 390958

When investigating the services on offer in Portishead I had no idea we had a recruitment company on our doorstep. Portishead really does have something to offer everybody.

Motoring

The Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead is a luxury prestigious car with a price tag of over £300,000 so for most of us this is a car we can only dream of owning.

The ‘Drophead’ is the name given to the convertible range of Roll Royce cars and the Phantom is believed to be a model used by Rolls Royce since 1925. Rolls Royce, now under the ownership of BMW, has been producing quality cars for over 100 years and this car maintains that tradition.

The car is almost entirely hand built at a state of the art factory in Goodwood, Sussex. Clients can have the car completely customised to their own unique specification using the Rolls Royce bespoke service. This involves anything from what trim to have, through to where you want a picnic table stored.

Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead

The model measures a massive 5.6 metres long and 1.9 metres wide, so it’s not a car you would want to try and squeeze in to a regular bay at the town’s car park.

With a weight of nearly 2.7 tonnes you may be surprised to learn that it has a top speed of 150 mph and can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds.

When a Rolls-Royce customer commissions a Phantom, standard features and options do not come in to the remit. They expect stunning creations and won’t be disappointed. The clock in the centre of the dash rotates to reveal the sat nav, with huge scissor doors closing electronically at the push of a button.

The 21 inch wheels have centre spinners to ensure the RR emblem is always pointing the right way up and the boot opens in two sections, the

lower part opening to provide a picnic table or seat from which to enjoy your picnic. It’s every gadget fanatic’s dream.

Options include the polished aluminum bonnet which costs around £7k and the wooden insert, exposed when the roof is retracted, is a £6K option.

Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament which can be concealed at the

push of a button.

Page 31: Everything Portishead - Issue 3 - Otober

4www.everythingportis-E V E R Y T H I N G

One customer is reputed to have used the wood from trees in his own garden for the insert, such is the bespoke service available from Rolls Royce

One minor criticism would be the relatively small fuel tank, at 80 litres, it gives a range of only 300 miles, averaging 17 miles to the gallon.

You do get a four year unlimited mileage warranty and no cost servicing during the warranty period. This includes brake pads and brake discs. All you pay for is fuel and tyres.

As a passenger, there is no doubt you feel like a member of royalty. There is virtually no road noise and it is an incredibly soft, comfortable ride, thanks to the air suspension and the 6.7 litre v12 engine, which is also hand built. This car is surprisingly agile for its size and as a driver you experience a high driving position with a commanding view. WE STOCK ALL

Gardeners’ Delight

Last month I said we would talk about bulbs in this issue. Narcissus, tulips and crocus are some of the most popular, but although we will touch on these, I want to talk about the bulbs you don’t see as often, but which are becoming more common these days.

My first choice would be Fritillaria, an abundant range of colour and height. My personal favourite is Fritillaria imperialis ‘Rubra’ (crown imperial) with bright orange flowers. Also Fritillaria michailovskyi, with striking two toned flowers, dark purplish brown and deep yellow at their tips.

Next on my list are alliums, part of the onion and garlic family. I love the tall alliums like christophii, which have large flower heads made up of 50 or more star shaped silvery lilac flowers. They bloom in early summer and can grow up to 1.2m (4ft).

Having talked about the two above I must admit I absolutely love tulips and the scent of some species of narcissus filling the air really makes you think of the advent of summer around the corner.

Sue Anderson writes on bulbs.Choose a site where the soil is free draining or add some grit to the soil to help it drain and find a position that gets the sun for at least part of the day. Bulbs should be planted in the autumn and you can plant tulips right up to November.

Most bulbs need planting 15-20 cm deep and 10-15cm apart. If you want a great display that will continue for many months, start with spring flowering crocus at the front of a border and some low growing alliums such as dwarf minus and nanum.

Behind these plant narcissus, mixing up the different shapes and sizes, interspersed with the Fritillary crown imperial. Then plant tulips and iris, followed at the back by tall alliums. This should provide a dazzling display from early spring to early summer.

Wedding Feature

However, some people take a plane full of travellers with them and turn their special occasion in to the holiday of a lifetime for friends and family. Whatever the reason for selecting this route, the bride and groom need to ensure things run smoothly to make their day one to remember for all the right reasons. Marrying overseas might take the headache out of deciding who you invite to the ceremony but it can have other pitfalls that need to be avoided.

We all know the stories of the bride who turned up in Barbados, while her wedding dress was flown to Bali, or worse still the bride who turned up in Hawaii while her husband to be, remained stranded at the airport in the UK.

Many travel agents have specialist consultants to help organise weddings at destinations all over the world but there are also independent travel counsellors and specialist overseas wedding suppliers who are available to help.

Calling on the right professionals in this field to help you can make planning your overseas wedding plain sailing.

More and more people these days choose to get married overseas, and they decide to do so for a number of reasons. Some choose to do this because they want guaranteed sunshine or an exotic wedding. Others see it as a way of keeping it small and intimate and combining their wedding with their honeymoon. That’s certainly one way to avoid offending people you don’t want to invite!

Dear Bluefish,

I am a first time buyer and I’m confused about all the different types of life cover. Can you help?

Regards

Simon

Money Matters

Dear Simon,

There are many different types of cover and, as always, you need to make sure you receive the correct advice for your circumstances. The two main types of life assurance for mortgages are level and decreasing term.

Level Term Assurance – This is a policy where the amount paid on death remains the same throughout the term of a mortgage. For instance if you start with £100,000 this amount will be paid on death any time between the start and typically 25 years (although with longer mortgages you would need a longer term). This type of cover is typically suitable for an interest only mortgage.

Decreasing Term Assurance – With this type of policy the amount paid upon death reduces throughout the term of the mortgage. For an initial sum assured of £100,000 this will reduce to £0 by the end of the term. Therefore in later years the amount paid out could be minimal. This cover is typically suitable for a repayment mortgage.

It is worth mentioning critical illness cover. This is another important protection policy which

can be taken alongside

the life assurance. This policy would pay out a lump sum

in the event of being diagnosed with one of a number of critical illnesses, including some forms of cancer or paralysis.

We have also found that some clients have critical illness policies which only cover a small number of illnesses. With protection policies the cheapest most certainly isn’t always the best. We can review your existing products and may be able to offer cheaper or more comprehensive cover.

Every individual is different so the above information should only be used as a guide to your options. However anyone looking for personal advice on protection products can contact us without obligation on the details below:

Crafts

The recent craft fair in Portishead highlighted the talented crafts people we have in Portishead and the surrounding areas. Many of them attend the Nailsea Craft Market at Somerset Square on the third Saturday of the month between 9am and 12.30pm. Some of them can also be found at the St Peter’s Primary School (Hallett’s Way, Portishead) Ladies Night on November 4th from 7pm and the school Christmas Fair on November 27th at 2pm.

Portishead mum Carole Pearce makes a whole range of tailor made Christmas crackers. They can be colour co-ordinated to match your theme or decor and they don’t have to be only for Christmas. They can be made for specific occasions or they can be used as gifts, with a quality gift inside as well as the snap and joke.In addition to the crackers Carole sells flannel art. This involves turning face cloths in to things to make inexpensive but unique gifts. The face cloths are made in to a number of items including handbags and cup cakes. They also come in flat packs with full instructions, which make ideal gifts that are easy to pop in the post. Carole can be contacted on 07775 888399.

Reflexologist Barbara Langdon started making organic wheat bags after gaining pain relief from a gift someone had bought for her. As she sat with the warm, moist wheat around her neck she began to wonder if it had been treated with pesticides and if so what harm it could cause her.To be on the safe side Barbara started making her own organic wheat bags which have proved a huge success with her customers. Barbara sells her wheat bags at craft markets and fairs, but will deliver to people living in Portishead. Find out more by calling her on 01275 817951.
