WASHINGTON DC May 10 2010 -Today the General AviationManufacturers Association (GAMA)reported that in the first quarter of 2010worldwide general aviation airplane deliv-eries totaled 390 units a 15 percent dropfrom the same period last year Howeverthis is an improvement over the dramaticdecline experienced in first quarter 2009deliveries as compared to first quarter2008 Total industry billings grew 71 per-cent in the first three months of the yearto $464 billion due to international deliv-eries of large cabin long-range airplaneswhere customers rely less on third partyfinancing than the remainder of the indus-try First quarter billings in 2010 are still126 percent below this same period in2008

ldquoThese numbers are being released onthe heels of Europersquos premier businessaviation show the European BusinessAviation Conference and Exhibitionwhere many of our manufacturers notedthat the market seems to be stabilizingrdquosaid GAMA President and CEO PeteBunce ldquoReported flight activity from theFAA and EUROCONTROL is on anupward trend and the used aircraft inven-tory is slowly decreasing However thesefirst quarter figures reveal that our indus-try is far from a recoveryrdquo

GAMA says that the continuation of bonusdepreciation will be crucial to allow ourindustry to increase production and bringback lost jobs Bunce added ldquoWe joinwith the rest of the manufacturing sectorin calling upon the US Congress toapprove bonus depreciation for productsordered in 2010 Our industry appreciatesthe Administrationrsquos strong support for thisinitiativerdquo

The piston airplane segment was down73 percent in the first quarter with 166units delivered as compared to 179 air-planes in the first three months of 2009The turboprop segment delivered 60units down from 89 units during the sameperiod in 2009 for a 326 percentdecrease Business jet shipments fell 141

percent in the first quarter with 164 air-planes delivered as compared to 191business jets in the first quarter of 2009

Anniversary of the Bellingham Airport and the 66th

Anniversary of lsquoD-Dayrsquo June 6 1944 when Allied

Forces stormed the beaches of Normandy to access

A fly-in rendezvous of this nature draws pilots and warbirds from all directions And for this occasion

other notable vintage aircraft museums of the Pacific Northwest joined the celebrations flying up several

of their rare warbirds from home base Paine Field at Everett WA The Historic Flight Foundation

wwwhistoricflightorg delivered four aircraft two lsquoGrumman Catsrsquo - an F7F-3 Tigercat and an F8F-2

Bearcat a P-51B Mustang and their latest acquisition a B-25D Mitchell bomber called ldquoGrumpyrdquo The

Flying Heritage Collection wwwflyingheritagecom provided their Republic P-47D Thunderbolt Host

museum ltwwwheritageflightorggt brought out their P-51D Mustang and the big A-1 Skyraider Several

individually owned warbirds were also on the ramp line and static display

All in all regardless of overcast skies and showers it

was an exceptional event bringing out young and

old alike many military veterans families and

countless aviation enthusiasts

410 Paint is generally sound Small areas require specialattention (touch up or repair by trained individual) due tooxidation peeling chipping corrosion or crazing Paint isdull in many (less than half) areas Most windows arecrazed and scratched

310 Paint is not shiny and has peeled in many areasMost leading edges and upper surfaces are crazed and oxi-dized Moderate number (5 or 6 per square foot) of chipscracks or dents can be found All window surfaces arescratched Even after touch-up and polishing aircraft stilllooks unsightly

210 Aircraft looks terrible Paint is badly oxidized peeledand blemished It is well beyond the touch-up and polishstage Corrosion dents and cracks require extensive work

The PiperSport manufactured by Czech SportAircraft (CSA) and distributed through master dis-tributor PiperSport Distribution Inc features a rateof climb of 1200 feet per minute and is capable ofreaching a maximum cruise speed of 138 miles perhour and an altitude of 10000 feet The aircraft hasa gross weight of 1320 pounds and 600 pounds ofuseful load With the ability to run on automotivefuel the PiperSportrsquos 30-gallon fuel capacity givesthe aircraft a range of 600 nautical miles and theability to refuel virtually anywhere in the world thatoffers either 100LL or premium unleaded automo-tive fuel

There are three variants of the aircraft ThePiperSport which sells for $119900 the PiperSportLT (primarily a training model) which sells for$129900 and the PiperSport LTD (professionalmodel) which sells for $139900 Each model fea-tures the latest in luxury ndash from leather seats to cut-ting-edge design ndash and is equipped with a 100-hpRotax 912 engine and a BRS complete aircraft para-chute recovery system Each model also features thesame gross weight speed fuel capacity and range

Its Time to Spring Clean Your Insurance Updating Your Coverages is Very Important

As spring arrives and many of us get back to the skies in full force we take it for granted that our aircraftneed to be inspected and serviced

Well your aviation insurance policy is no different This is a good time to inspect and service your insurancecoverage as well

Too many owners simply assume that what was good enough last year will be good enough this year too Un-fortunately that isnrsquot always the case as many have found out the hard way So join me in a quick spring-cleaning of your policy

First Some Good NewshellipThen Some Bad News

The good news so far this year is thatmdashon the short term at leastmdashpremiums are staying very competitiveThat means that it wouldnrsquot hurt for you to get a quote or two from different sources You just might findyourself a better deal than you have been getting

The bad newsmdashwhich you may discover if you take my advice from the previous paragraphmdashis that there aresome companies pushing policies that look and sound good but are severely lacking when it comes to cover-age Very low prices usually go hand-in-hand with long lists of exclusions restrictions and limitations Payextra close attention to liability limits on passengers and family members the minimum you should consider(unless you always fly alone) is $1 million with no sub-limits

As always make sure you deal with someone you can trust and that you feel comfortable with If they are try-ing to push a ldquoone size fits allrdquo policy or donrsquot seem to know much about aviation yoursquod be better off dealingwith someone else

Updating the Market Value of Your Aircraft Is Critical

As most of you know the prices of aircraft have skyrocketed in recent years A few years ago a mid-1970rsquosCessna 172 in good condition could be found for $25-30000 In todayrsquos market the same aircraft are listed at$50-75000

This increase has a very important ramification for your insurance coverage The amount for which you in-sure your aircraft has to be the fair market value If it isnrsquot you could be in for a nasty shock should you everhave an accident As Irsquove explained in this column before the insurance company considers the amount ofcoverage to be the full value of the aircraft So if you have a claim for that amount (or more) they pay youonly that amountmdashand they take your airplane as salvage Therefore if you were only insured for $30000 onthat $60000 Cessna you would get a cheque for $30000 and lose your plane

Thatrsquos why you should carefully consider the fair market value of your aircraft on an annual basis and updateyour insurance policy accordingly

Territories and Liability Limit

As I mentioned above liability limits are a very important consideration and an area where insurers try to cutcorners Your insurance spring-cleaning wouldnrsquot be complete without a review of this important area

Historically speaking in regards to the ldquoGolden Age of Aviationrdquo (1919-1939) it is absolutely amaz-ing to me that in just 20 years civil aviation virtually sprang from infancy to adulthood Free enter-prise and aviation pioneers of varied backgrounds got it all ignited in consort with designersengineers flyers ex-military pilots financiers and the publicrsquos excitement and insatiable curiosity ofthe new world of flying machines and speed

The lsquoRoaring lsquo20srsquo opened an era of Flying Circuses Barnstorming Air Racing trans-Atlantic andother record setting flights championed by the likes of Americarsquos Colonel Roscoe Turner JamesldquoJimmyrdquo Doolittle Elinor Smith Pancho Barnes Wiley Post Charles Lindbergh Amelia Earhart andHoward Hughes Countless others including founders and builders named Curtiss Laird Stear-man Stinson Cessna Beech Fairchild Lockheed all contributing much to the origins andprogress of the civil aviation industry worldwide

Moreover during this period of aviation excitement there were numerous unheralded contributorsone of which was a chap by the name of Max Harlow an aeronautical engineer and instructor at thePasadena Junior College in southern California from the late 1920s to the mid 1940s In early1937 Harlow laid out a class project to design a single engine all-metal (advanced stressed skin)low-wing cantilever four-place cabin monoplane The PJC-1 (Pasadena Junior College Prototype)first flew 14 September 1937 During certification however the plane crashed But Harlownonetheless was impressed with the given efforts Accordingly Harlow put into play the develop-ment of a second aircraft the PJC-2 but with electrically operated retractable landing gear Built in1938 at Alhambra Airport by Harlow Aircraft Company full production would not occur until 1940due to development snags and extended flight-testing exercises Financial problems and stiff com-petition in the face of a darkening situation in Europe only ten aircraft came off the assembly linebefore the close of production operations The Civil Aeronautics Administration evidently acquiredsix perhaps seven PJC-2s and the remainder went to private hands

According to the current owner of unit number seven the PJC-2 is an ldquohonest airplanerdquo and verycomfortable to fly Powered by a 175-hp Warner SS165 Series 7-cylinder radial piston engine fedby two Stromberg carburetors model PJC-2 had a top speed of 150-mph a cruise speed of 135 a500 mile range and a service ceiling of 15500 feet

Curtiss P-40 Warhawk Tomahawk KittyhawkThe P-40 was the best-known Curtiss-Wright Corp aircraft considered by many asone of the most rugged fighter planes ever built It was not however held to be oneof the great combat fighters of the war Nonetheless the P-40 Hawks were quitethe capable ground supportattack platforms and noted for being durable and effec-tive in tropic and desert battle conditions Somewhat of a mixed breed and contro-versial airplane conceived of the companys radial engine P-36A and their experi-

mental YP-37 fighters to produce a lone prototype XP-40 equipped with a 1090 hp Allison inline V-1710C V-12 piston engine

Design work began in 1937and after various refinementsthe first production example ofthe single seat P-40 (Model 81)appeared in May 1940 The air-craft then evolved to be includ-ed amongst the most widelyused pursuit fighter planes ofWWII eventually being flownunder the colors of many Alliednations either by direct pur-chase or the Lend-Lease pro-gram By most accounts more than 13000 P-40 hawks in over a dozen versions came off the assemblylines between 1939 and 1944 The P-40 particularly as a fighter-bomber saw action on all fronts inEurope Africa the Mediterranean the Pacific and Russia Not only was the P-40 the US Army Air Forcesfront-line fighter at the beginning of the second World War but was also said to be its most important fighterduring the wars first two years Pilots of the 46th amp 47th Pursuit Squadrons (both units flying P-40s) werethe first Americans to score victories of WWII when they shot down ten Japanese aircraft in action overHawaii during the attack on Pearl Harbor December 7 1941

By September 1940 200 of the initial model had been delivered to the United States Army Air Corps A fur-ther but lesser number of the P-40A earmarked to fill export orders by the French were redirected to Britainafter the fall of France in late 1940 and called the Tomahawk I These aircraft though were used only fortraining purposes primarily because of less than desired engine power armor and insufficient armament

A second variant of the American named Warhawk was the P-40B which the British dubbed theTomahawk II Arriving in strength with the Royal Air Force in early 1941 this model did have better armormore armament (two nose-mounted amp four wing-mounted machine guns) and self-sealing fuel tanksRegardless the B still lacked the high altitude fighter ability above 25000 feet In any event this P-40was the first of the Hawk series to experience combat under the British flag which employed them asfighter-bombers in the African campaign with the Americans assigning theirs to the Pacific Theatre The P-40B and P-40C models were not produced in large numbers

The first P-40s sent to China became fighters for the American mercenary force (87 pilots and 300 or soground support personnel) These Tomahawk types were an export ordered block of 100 Curtiss Hawk 81-A3s otherwise known as a P-40B that were intended for Great Britain but were diverted by a waiverarrangement due to pressing needs of the Free Chinese against advancing forces of the Japanese It wasout of this action however that the P-40 gained its greatest notoriety In the time between December 181941 and July 4 1942 the American Volunteer Group-Chinese Air Force (AVG) that became betterknown as the Flying Tigers (Fei Hou) organized under the command of (General) Claire L Chennaultmade the Curtiss P-40 and the shark-jaw symbol world famous Actually the shark-tooth design painted onthe nose or engine fuselage of the aircraft was adopted from the RAFrsquos Desert Air Force Squadron 112 air-planes In almost seven months of operations the Flying Tigers flew the P-40B along with some lateradded P-40Es in combat actions over East-China Burma Thailand and French Indo-China The FlyingTigers shot down 296 Japanese aircraft with 300 more probables against the losses of 69 AVG planes inair action and on the ground with 25 pilots killed by enemy actions Given all the circumstances includingsticky-hot weather exceptional results The AVG of which the famed Greg Pappy Boyington was amember existed only until July 4 1942 when it was disbanded having but 30 well used P-40s left in air-worthy condition to become part of the 23rd Fighter Group known as the China Air Task Force of theUnited States Army Air Forces Claire L Chennault was then recommissioned a brigadier general andbecame the groups first commander Continued on Pg 24

Canadian-wise four RCAF squadrons overseas -nos 400 403 414 amp 430 - flew Tomahawks but innon-combat roles of patrol reconnaissance andtraining duties while stationed in England By 1943however the Tomahawk was outclassed and allsquadrons had switched to either Spitfires orMustangs Kittyhawks entered service in late 1941with home defense Royal Canadian Air ForceFighter Squadrons - Nos 14 111 118 132 133 amp135 Two of the Squadrons Nos 14 amp 111 weresent to the Aleutian Islands of Alaska to assistagainst the threat of invasion by the JapaneseSquadron Leader K A Boomer of No 111Squadron destroyed a Mitsubishi Rufe float planeduring a fighter sortie over Kiska which turned outto be the only air combat and air victory for theRCAF in the North American Theatre of war Lateron the P-40 N version also became part of theCanadian inventory
