Our Gratitude Continues!

Page 8: Every Veteran VeteransBreakfastClub.com Has a Story

The VBC’s Mission

The Veterans Breakfast Club holds 40-50 storytelling events per year across Western Pennsylva-nia. You don’t have to be a veteran to attend, and everyone is invited to hear the stories. Storytell-ers of all ages are welcome. Most stories arise spontaneously from those attending, and between 10-20 people share memories over the course of a typical 90-minute program. Come check one out! Programs are always free, and the only charge is for breakfast, if you care to eat.

“The mission of the Veterans Breakfast Club is to create communities of listening around veterans and their stories to ensure that this living history will never be forgotten. We be-lieve that through our work, people will be

educated, healed, and inspired.”

We wish our friend, Marine, and VBC

board member, T.J. McGarvey, a rapid re-covery. We hope to

see you at a breakfast

soon!

In addition to our live storytell-ing programs, we also sit vet-erans down for on-camera, broadcast-quality interviews through our Veteran Voices Oral History Initiative. Over the past four years, we have captured and preserved over 700 veterans' stories. Our

online oral history collection offers the public over 180 hours of veterans' stories that can be can be viewed, downloaded, and shared at VeteransVoicesofPittsburgh.com. We also share our veterans’ stories with the Heinz History Center to become part of its perma-nent collection. Our goal is to capture every veteran’s story from Western Pennsylvania.

Our mission at Home Care Assis-tance is to change the way the world ages. We provide older adults with quality care that ena-bles them to live happier, healthi-

er lives at home. Our compassionate caregivers pro-vide non-medical services needed to help older adults remain in their home. We embrace a positive, balanced approach to aging centered on the evolv-ing needs of older adults. Please contact Rhonda

McConahy at 724-333-2868 with any questions.

The Post-9/11 Veterans Storytelling Project

This spring, the VBC launches its Post-9/11 Veterans Storytelling Project, a

special effort to reach our youngest veterans who don’t often attend our regular

weekday breakfasts. We’re grateful to the Jefferson Regional Foundation for sup-

porting this pilot project. Our goal is to provide those who served since 9/11 the

same opportunities to tell their own stories in their own way that we offer our older

veterans, so that others—families, friends, and neighbors—can be educated and in-

spired by them.

Directing this special project for the

VBC is Nick Grimes, whose job it will be

to develop storytelling programs and co-

ordinate oral history interviews with post-

9/11 veterans. Nick is an Army veteran

who served from 2004-2011, including a

total 27 months in combat in Afghanistan

with the 10th Mountain Division.

“I’m excited to join the VBC staff and

launch this important project,” says Nick. “I think

many of us who served since September 11, 2001

are ready to start telling our stories, and I think

people are ready to hear them. I look forward to

our voices joining those from the older genera-

tions heard at VBC breakfasts and in interviews.”

Look for schedule updates and more infor-

mation on this project in the coming months. And

welcome aboard, Nick!
