PASTOR
Dear Friends: There is a story about a Chinese emperor called Ming. One time a wise man named Lao came to visit the emperor. Emperor Ming took his guest on a grand tour of the royal palace to show all he had: his spacious dwellings, his gardens, his wife, his children, his horses, his house-temple, his garage, his attic, his patio, his swimming pool, his boat, his fields. But the wise man seemed rather unimpressed and bored with it all and yawned several times while Ming was showing off his treasures and possessions. That evening the emperor gave a most wonderful dinner for his guest. They sat opposite each other at the royal banquet, eating the finest and rarest of foods and drinking the choicest of wines. Servants ran to and fro, waiting upon them. While they were at the banquet, the wise man, Lao, suddenly asked his host whether he might like to make a journey with him. The emperor answered enthusiastically, “Oh, yes!” “Hold on to the tip of my cloak,” said Lao. That is what Ming did, and off they flew. The wise man flew with Ming over high mountains and deep seas to a magnificent palace. In comparison, Ming’s palace and treasures and possessions were like a tiny hovel. In Lao’s palace everything was of gold, ivory, and crystal. There was music everywhere, and incense, and rich food, and drink. Ming remained with Lao for many years, and each day there were new surprises: concerts, theatre-plays, dancers, and so on. Ming asked himself how he had ever been able to live in the squalor of his own palace and empire. One day Lao said, “Let us go back.” And back they went. It was as if they were falling through an endless tunnel for days and days, until they were sitting again opposite each other at the very same table from which they had started their journey. The food was still fresh warm and hot just as it had been before they left. The servants were still running about. The emperor could not understand what had just happened to him. So while the wise man was busy chewing a piece of chicken, the emperor called his oldest servant and asked him, “What happened to me?” The old man shrugged his shoulders. “Nothing, Sir. You have been staring in front of you for a moment or so.” It is by means of this story that the Chinese tell one another that everything in this world is transient and passing, like the grass in the field, which Jesus said is here today and tomorrow dries up; or like the flowers and lilies, more beautiful than Solomon in all his array, that tomorrow fade and wither (Luke 12:27-28). That is true of everything in this world, and of all we might have and possess. It is like what is said about our God’s eternity and our human frailty in Psalm 90:1-6, “Lord you have been our refuge through all generations. Before the mountains were born or the earth and the world brought forth; from eternity to eternity you are God. A thousand years in your eyes are like yesterday, come and gone. But humans you return to dust saying, ‘Return, you mortals!’ Before a watch passes in the night, you have brought them to their end. They disappear like sleep at dawn; they are like grass that dies. It sprouts green in the morning; by evening it is dry and withered.” It is, however, not true of ourselves with regard to the good we do. We shall live and remain forever; and the good we do shall also live on. That is why we should take ourselves and others very seriously, much more seriously than all those things that pass and are gone. We must make use of material things to live and to serve. Those things should remain the “means” they are intended to be to help us grow and become fruitful in this life. We wither and die; but what we grew by our lives is left behind to grow. “When we die, the only things we take with us are the things we gave away.”
Something(s) to think about:
When Pope Paul VI invited Mother Teresa and her sisters to work in the slums of Rome, some nuns complained and remarked,
“But we are already too many and have no work.” “In that case,” said Mother Teresa, “I’ll show you where to look for it.”

A lady was met by a beggar. The beggar said to her, “I haven’t eaten for six days.” The lady said, “Oh, if I had your will power.”

A lady asked her doctor, “Doctor, why am I seized with these restless longings for the beautiful and faraway?” “My dear lady,” he
replied, “they are the usual symptoms of too much comfort in the home and too much ingratitude in the heart.”
