Significant Projects

Rohm and Haas Kentucky, Louisville KY Conversion of existing dual dust collection systems for entire process unit into

single Water Scrubber Design: This project entailed removal of all existing dust collection equipment and installation of new pre-fabricated stainless steel 48” and 60” OD inlet ducts into a common water scrubber with water re-circulation tank and pumps. This was a major renovation and after completion the results exceeded all expectations for efficiency and cost. I convinced the area process engineers into installing the new equipment at the high tie-in point elevation within the existing process building instead of on the grade level outside, which was their first thought. This saved an enormous amount of money out of the project budget by maintaining the existing dust conveying fans sizes, except with a sleight horse power increase and vane upgrade which they could tolerate, enabled shorter runs on the large ducts involved and kept the equipment in a housed protected environment. We could gravity drain the scrubber re-circulation tank runoff instead of using a sludge pumping system and hold tank for discharge to the plant chemical sewer system.Design Duties: Performed equipment arrangement drawings, duct and pipe routing designs, piping isometrics, scrubber re-circulation tank design, P&ID design and miscellaneous structural steel designs. This was a retrofit project, which required complete field verification of existing systems to be modified and/or replaced. I was the sole Piping/Mechanical Designer on this project. This project was completed on schedule and well below budget.

Distributed Control System Automation of (8) Batch Reactor Processes: This was an ongoing effort, which took place over several years, one reactor and its support equipment, at a time. All existing piping and instrumentation were replaced. New stainless steel reactor designs replaced the original carbon steel glass coated ones. New catalyst and activator tank designs replaced their counterparts. Dedicated finished product storage tanks, pumping systems and piping were designed and piped for each reactor. New ultra high-pressure reactor cleaning systems were designed. The new DCS controls and sophisticated instrumentation, which included over one hundred monitoring and control devices on most of the reactors, replaced the existing antiquated analog/manual control systems. I was personally involved in each design phase of the conversions. These were retrofit projects, which required complete field verification of existing systems to be modified and/or replaced.Design Duties: Piping layout arrangements, ASME reactor and support tank designs, Pressure safety element (rupture disks) vent stacks designs, piping isometrics and P&ID designs. I was also the design group supervisor during this time frame.Note: During these conversions there were over (300) entirely new process and utility P&ID’s created. I had a hand in the creation of many and checked each one for adherence to corporate engineering and ISA-S5.1 standards.
