At Bregenz Festival this year grand opera is coupled with pop pageant. And it works!

That’s Bregenz: a lavish show on the lake for 200,000 spectators each summer, with many valuable small productions in tow. A good model.

And this year Carmen reached a not previously attained mark on the scale of theatrical effectiveness (where in fact the sky’s the limit). The show is a feast for the eyes, the lake stage a spectacle in itself.

Stuttgarter Zeitung

On a basic set consisting of a colossal pair of female hands with a flurry of playing cards between them, the two artists create nothing less than a visual firework display of projections and colours. In the process Kasper Holten, 44, pulls off the magic trick of staging this well known Spanish crime-of-passion drama in part as a psychodrama in an intimate setting.

APA, Austria

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra under Paolo Carignani played in the Festspielhaus. Thanks to sophisticated sound technology the audience heard the orchestra in superb quality. The stage set contributes a lot to the success of Carmen: enormous playing cards serve as performing areas and for video projections (Luke Halls). In the fascinating alternation of colours and images, the cards measuring 7 m by 4.3 m sometimes appear to whirl through the air.

OPERA ON THE LAKE 2018

CARMENGEORGES BIZET

The melody that French composer Georges Bizet found for the passion of soldier Don José has become immortal, as has the song Carmen sings when she comes out of the cigarette factory where she works, her famous Habanera about the unruliness of love. Her wild dance in Lillas Pastia’s bar, the Seguidilla, the Toreador’s Song and the march into the bullfighting arena are »earworms« too all over the world.

For the Danish stage director Kasper Holten this »opera about destiny and obsession« centres on »two people who are treated as outsiders, whose paths cross and who cling to each other in a passionate but unhealthy relationship«.

Diamonds! Spades! ... Death!« The cards Carmen is using to tell her own fortune do not augur well. She

will die, followed by Don José. Briefly in love with him, she then spurns him because he’s not ready to follow her unconditionally and live as a smuggler. She then welcomes the advances of the bullfighter Escamillo.

The fateful moment when Carmen throws the cards into the air gave Es Devlin the idea for her stage design on Lake Constance. The British stage designer has created sets for pop acts like Adele, U2, Take That, the Pet Shop Boys and Kanye West. The playing cards in Kasper Holten’s production can do much more than tell fortunes: they are performing areas for soloists, choral singers, dancers, stuntmen and smugglers. Also, projections on their surface conjure up the different worlds of bullfighting, cartomancy and passionate love.

»Love’s a gypsy child that’s never known laws.If you don‘t love me, I love you,and if I love you, then beware!...«

BEATRICE CENCIBERTHOLD GOLDSCHMIDT

it received its concert premiere in London. Goldschmidt himself described the work as a »real bel canto opera« and it ends with a poignant requiem for the two executed women.

This suspenseful opera about church cor-ruption and human violence will be directed by Johannes Erath, whose staging of Miros-lav Srnka’s Make No Noise at the Workshop Theatre in 2016 was very well received by au-diences and critics alike. In recent years he has mounted productions at Bavarian State Opera, Semperoper Dresden, Oper Frank-furt and Oper Graz among other opera houses. Now together with set designer Kat-rin Connan and costume designer Katharina Tasch he will stage the first production of Beatrice Cenci in Austria at the Festspiel-haus in Bregenz. The music director will be Johannes Debus, who Bregenz Festival audiences will remember for his realisation of Jacques Offenbach’s opera The Tales of Hoffmann.

Francesco Cenci owns several palaces in and around Rome, leads a dissolu-te life with lavish feasts and doesn’t

shrink from committing acts of violence to remove people he finds troublesome. He escapes trial by donating some of his real estate to the Church. He horrifies his dinner guests by gleefully announcing the death of his two sons. He responds to his daughter Beatrice’s despair by even worse physical abuse. Abetted by her stepmother Lucrezia, Beatrice plans her father’s murder.

The true story of Roman nobleman Francesco Cenci’s daughter, who was born in 1577 and executed along with Lucrezia in 1599, was turned into an opera by German composer Berthold Goldschmidt. Goldschmidt had first got to know the story in 1923 from a novella by Stendhal, but an opportunity to set a libretto drawn from Percy Bysshe Shelley’s play The Cenci didn’t present itself until 1949 when he entered an opera competition in the United King-dom. The Jewish composer had lived in London since 1935, dying there in 1996. The competition jury awarded his draft opera a prize, but the promised performance never took place. It was not until 1988 that

ORCHESTRALCONCERTS

Masterpieces of the symphonic reper-toire can be heard in the orchestral concerts. Familiar and popular works

– two Beethoven symphonies, Dvořák’s best known symphony and two important pieces by Richard Strauss – are on the programme alongs-ide a complete novelty: the huge Symphony for Baritone and Orchestra by Tyrolean com-poser Thomas Larcher, who is working on an opera that has been commissioned by Bregenz Festival. Another work being performed here for the first time is Martinů’s virtuoso Double Concerto. In that concert, featuring music solely by Czech composers, the Prague Philharmonic Choir – a regular guest at Bregenz Festival since 2011 – will be celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of their country’s independence with Dvořák’s Te Deum. With Carmen on the lake stage, music by one of Bizet’s compatriots will be played as well: Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand and La valse, his farewell and homage to the waltz – which we hear in full glory in Strauss’s Rosenkavalier Suite.

Gastronomes will be spoilt for choice here. The number of excellent restaurants is above average. Aside from star-rated establish-ments, the cooking is generally very good, predominantly in the regional style.

BREGENZ

The town on Lake Constance is lively and culture conscious. Works by contemporary artists are displayed at Kunsthaus Bregenz (KUB), a multiple award winning glass cube that was designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. Changing exhibitions can be seen at Vorarlberg Museum. Its original facade is decorated with over 16,000 concrete petals. The top floor has a unique viewing area with an enormous panorama window affording a great view of Lake Constance. Fine views of the lake and the alpine landscape are also to be had from the Pfänder, the 1,064 m high mountain behind Bregenz. The quickest way

to the top is via cable car.

DORNBIRN

A popular destination in Dornbirn is Inatura, an interactive natural history centre with science zones. The Rolls-Royce Museum contains the world‘s largest collection of motor cars of that luxury brand. Karren Mountain, right on Dornbirn‘s doorstep, can be ascended by cable car to the glass-walled Panorama Restaurant, which offers fantastic

views.

HOHENEMS

The Jewish Museum in Hohenems explores historical and topical subjects in its perma-nent exhibition and special exhibitions. The museum and the carefully restored, formerly Jewish buildings lend the town its distinctive character, as does the Schubertiade which is held here every year and attracts an interna-tional audience.

The federal state of Vorarlberg lies in the multi-border region of Lake Constance, a lively cultural area where four countries meet: Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. Austria’s westernmost state offers an appealing mix of culture and nature and quality attractions for

visitors.

LAKE CONSTANCE & VORARLBERG

Major festivals, stimulating exhibitions, modern architecture and gorgeous landsca-pes – all this can be found in region of Lake Constance and Vorarlberg, with its towns Bregenz, Dornbirn, Hohenems and Feld-kirch. Vorarlberg has long been regarded as the cultural centre of the international Lake Constance region. More than anywhere else in Austria, the scenery is characterised by traditional and contemporary architec-ture side by side, both in the towns and the villages.

FELDKIRCH

The medieval town abounds in cobbled streets and shady arcades. A modern touch is supplied by the new Montforthaus, a culture and congress centre. Schattenburg castle, which towers above the town, has a museum dedicated to local history. From the keep there are spectacular views of the surrounding scenery. The tourist office Feld-kirch Tourismus offers a range of interesting themed tours.

MOUNTAIN AND LAKE

After exploring the old Roman town and

visiting one of the museums, consider taking

a boat trip or ascending the mountain next

to the town. Enjoy an excursion boat and

discover Bregenz and its bay from a new per-

spective. Or if you prefer higher altitudes,

the Pfänder is the place for you. The cable

car takes you to the top of the mountain

(1,064 m), where you’ll be rewarded with a

stunning panorama of Lake Constance, Bre-

genz and Bregenz Forest. The big cabin of

the modern cableway can accommodate up

to 80 people. Trips outside the normal ope-

rating schedule can be arranged on request.

EATING AND DRINKING

Alongside cultural highlights, Bregenz also

offers a range of culinary delights. Numerous

restaurants in the town centre and at the

lakeside can provide refreshment and

sustenance before you round off the evening

atmospherically at a performance of

Georges Bizet’s Carmen on the lake stage .

Please visit our website

www.bregenz.travel or drop in at the tourist

office on Rathausstraße 35a – we’ll be glad to

help. We can give you more information on

group tours and provide you with detailed

maps.

Bregenz offers plenty of variety, perhaps more than any other town on Lake Constance. Why not combine a visit to Bregenz Festival

with a day spent in this lively cultural town?

ART AND CULTURE

Stroll from Leutbühel along the Maurachgas-

se into the historical upper town, where the

oldest buildings in Bregenz are to be seen.

Climb the town’s landmark, Martinsturm

(Martin’s Tower), which has the largest

onion-dome in the Lake Constance area.

We’d be happy to lay on a tour for you so you

can find out all about the town known in

Roman times as Brigantium. On the way back

into the town centre a visit to the Künstler-

haus Palais Thurn & Taxis with its exciting
