a&W CHoo CHoo mama By Craig Van Horn

You may remember a few years ago reading an article about the A&W Boys and there AA/Fuel Altered. Well it’s been since The March Meets of 2015 that we’ve been playing

with Nitro. The AA/Fuel Altered is out and a Nostalgia Fuel Funny Car has replaced it. We got our feet wet in nitro with the altered and learned a lot. With the fuel altered there were only a few events a year where we could race and we want to do a lot more racing than that. The altered had a 6.00 second index, which means that if you go faster than 6.00 seconds you break out (lose). We want to play with the big boys of the Nostalgia Nitro Fuel racing scene. We want to go as fast as we can and not be limited by an index. We also wanted to have an opportunity to race at more events throughout the western United States. Being a part of this adventure, working on a nitro fuel car is one of my bucket list things. Getting to know the own-ers of the car Jim and Karen Reed from Paso Robles over the last few years has been great, they have become like family to me now. Working with my family is a real treat, my wife Jen-nifer, enjoys being around the people that are involved with the car. My son Shawn is the one with the knowledge and tal-ent to build and drive the car, his wife Krista, is our B.U.G. (back up girl) and mother to my 16 month old grandson, Bode. There is also my son Nick, our clutch guy and com-puter guru. I am a very proud father. We have a lot of friends that also help out, Shane Milinich who works on the bottom end of the engine, Chris O’Dell who works on the right side cylinder head. Norman Haggard, who mixes fuel and helps everywhere, and we also have Jerry Zalusky who cooks for us at the big races.

A car show at an RV Resort? Turns out it is the ideal venue for the Mopars of Bakers-field's annual American Car Show at the Crest RV Park in Bakersfield. Their show is always held on the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend with all proceeds going to the Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House. During their 6 year association with Ronald McDonald House the Mopars have raised nearly $100,000. This year the Mopars had a record turnout of 218 cars, trucks and bikes. Activities included a surprise visit from Ronald McDonald and his stage show which was good fun for kids of all ages. The Mopars show is known for its large number raffle prizes which included a flat screen TV and several gas grills. New this year was a silent auction highlighted by a numbered and signed Carrol Shelby print. Plus the 50-50 drawing during the show, Breakfast burritos and burgers were available as well as the full ser-vice restaurant and bar at the Crest. Hislop Photography provided show and drone photog-raphy for the event. The Mopars of Bakersfield have nearly 40 active members and meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month, for details call Randy @ 661-978-2905 or Val @ 661-301-4385.

Tulare, CA…For the final time in 2017 the traveling King of the West-NARC Fujitsu 410 Sprint Cars will grace the Merle Stone Chevrolet Thunderbowl Raceway clay on Saturday June, as part of an action packed four division program.

The most recent KWS-NARC visit to the Thunderbowl was captured by Paradise, CA’s Kyle Hirst, who drives for locally based owner’s Dennis and Teresa Roth. Hirst has grown to be one of the favorites whenever

he signs in at the track and will certainly be a driver to beat on June.

The King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Racing Series has competed in five races so far this season, with Campbell’s Bud Kaeding currently leading the standings at the helm of the familiar Williams Motor-sports Zero sprinter. Kaeding picked up a victory at the Peter Murphy Classic in April at Thunderbowl Raceway.

Completing the top-five in points as of press time are Kingsburg’s Cory Eliason, Fresno’s Gio Scelzi, Hanford’s DJ Netto and Penngrove’s Buddy Kofoid. Both Scelzi and Kofoid are just 15-years of age, showing the impressive youth movement that the series has seen this season.

Also in competition on Saturday June 10 will be the Western RaceSaver Sprint Cars, Hobby Stocks and Sport Mods.

Reserved tickets will cost $25, with general admission bleacher tickets $20. Kids 6-12 are half price and 5 and under are

free. To pre-order tickets contact 559-688-0909. The ticket sales and will call win-dow opens at 3pm at the track, while front gate opens at 4pm. Cars will be on track for wheel packing just after 5pm, with hot laps, qualifying and heat races to follow. More info on the track, as well as a seating chart can be found at http://www.thunder-bowlraceway.com

Special thanks to all of our partners for their support of Thunderbowl Raceway in-cluding Merle Stone Chevrolet, Budweiser, Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino, Roth Motor-sports, KRC Safety, Western Metal, South-west Contractors, Double “D” Towing and JD Heiskel & Company.

The Merle Stone Chevrolet Thunder-bowl Raceway is located at the Tulare County Fairgrounds on the corner of Bard-sley and K Streets in Tulare, California. From the junction of SR 99 and SR 137, go west on SR 137. At South K go south for one half-mile to the fairgrounds. Camping is available during the weekend.

tHe oranGe Demon By Vic Groah

It seems like many of my fond memories center around some of the cars I have had over the years. Each and everyone has its story. I am sure you are the same way; there are memo-rable moments and memorable cars in your past.

In my late twenties I lost everything and had to start over again with a bag of clothes and a $100. A fellow I knew had a plain Jane dirty white 57 Ford two-door coupe. It had no extras of any kind, or so I thought, it was plain as dirt. It was a radio and heater delete stripy. It looked bad and ran bad but at $100 it was cheap.

I was living in a converted one-car garage and working at a service station at night and going to school in the day.

After work I used the shop at the station and gave the old Ford a tune up. It came alive, with new plugs, points and wires it actually ran on all eight cylinders. In fact it ran very well. Close examination showed that the plain Jane was in fact a little sleeper. The Ford had a spe-cial order high performance 312 engine with a big Holley carburetor, high compression heads and a radical cam. It turned out to be a hot little number. My new girl friend had a sharp orange Corvette so we decided to paint the little Ford competition orange. This was done at the station after hours. A set of chrome wheels and baby moon hubcaps set it off. The plain Jane became a thing of beauty. With the lowered front and big tires on the back it had a very aggressive stance.

The car immediately began to be noticed. Whenever we cruised main we were chal-lenged to a race or offered money for the car. I raced a few times but I could not afford to get caught and fined so most of the time kind of held it down. Everywhere we went it got a lot of attention.

I always had a thing for convertibles so was always looking at them at the car lots. I happened to spot a nice clean late model Thunderbird convertible. It looked great but it was eight hundred dollars, cheap for that car at the time but way out of my class.

I opened he station on Sunday mornings, as did the manager of the Thrifty drug store in the shopping center. The new Mustangs had just been introduced by Ford and he had just bought a new K code mustang and wanted to show everyone how hot it was. He had a great car but was a not a great driver. Each Sunday morning we would come to the same stop light at the same time. He challenged me to a race. I tore him up. The little 57 had big tires on the back, traction bars and would hook up better than his stock factory tires. This happened three weeks in a row. After the third time he came over at lunch and inquired as to what was under the hood of the little orange 57 Ford. I showed him. He asked if it could be bought. I had saved a couple of hundred dollars toward the Thunderbird so I told him yes, five hundred would buy it. He told me that was crazy and went back to work. After work that night he came over with five one hundred dollar bills and drove the little Ford away. My girl and I went over and the Thunderbird was still on the lot so with a $100 loan from her we bought it.

The Thrifty manager was transferred to another store right after that and I never saw the 57 again. The Thunderbird was not as quick as the 57 coupe but it was the fancy convert-ible that I had dreamed of owning. My new girl friend had long flowing blonde hair and she looked stunning with it blowing in the breeze in that convertible.

OUr END Of ThE SEASON CAr ShOW IS ON SUN OCTObEr 23rD

SHoP oWner aDvoCateS For voCatIonal eDuCatIon Shop classes were readily available in most public schools when I grew up. My elec-tive classes in junior high were woodshop and metal shop. During high school I enrolled in all of the auto shop classes, as well as an electronics class. Unfortunately, shop classes began to disappear from many public schools during the mid-1980’s and 90’s. The cost to equip a facility and the safety requirement of smaller class sizes make vocational education more expensive than other subject areas. The shrinking availability of shop class in public schools was also an unintended con-sequence of the one size fits all perspective that eve-ryone should get a 4-year college degree. When the goal of public school is to prepare every single stu-dent for college, other con-siderations like athletics, art, music, and vocational education are perceived as less essential, resulting in fewer options for students. Attending school board meetings in support of the lo-cal high school auto shop program is a common occur-rence for one local shop owner. He is also a member of the Automotive Service Council, a group of industry leaders working to advance the professionalism of the automotive repair industry. Speaking at school board meetings about the importance of vocational educa-tion, and persuading them not to cut shop classes, continues to be a top priority for this shop owner. His concern over a dismissive at-titude towards vocational education by those in charge was deepened by one school board member’s comment; “Any high school stu-dent can change the oil in a car.” That’s not the prevailing attitude for school administra-tors, but without any input from the com-munity, standardized testing and budget is-sues become predominant considerations by default. This particular shop owner does more than just talk. He hires students from the high school auto shop class to work part-time as paid interns. He has sponsored (paid for) several students who were interested in be-coming repair technicians to attend the Reed-ley College Automotive Technology program. And on one occasion, he changed a school board member’s viewpoint of vocational edu-cation with a practical demonstration. Some of us maintain our own vehicles, but most people take their cars to a repair shop for service. The school board member mentioned above was in need of an oil change and went to see the shop owner for service as usual. A pleasant conversation began as the work order was being written up. With the work order and keys in hand, the shop owner went out to the shop area where he instructed an intern to lift the car and look for the oil filter. The shop owner immediately returned to the customer waiting area where their con-versation resumed. After a few minutes the board member politely asked: “Shouldn’t you be out in the shop taking care of my car?” to which the shop owner responded, “It’s O.K., I have a high school kid working on it.” A con-cerned look began to form on the car-owners face. They stepped over to the window to see the car on the lift, and the shop owner said, “See, the kid is under your car trying to find the oil filter. You did say that any high school student could change the oil in a car, didn’t you?” The school board member developed a

deeper appreciation of vocational education as a result of this unique demonstration. It’s amazing how important something becomes when it’s your own $60,000 luxury car being worked on. Don’t worry, lifting the car prop-erly was a task that the intern was trained to do, and the oil change was completed by a professional, so the customer’s car was never at risk. Learning can come from: instruction with words, demonstrations, and practical exercises, all of which are used in vocational

education, and are most ef-fective when someone wants to learn. Sometimes educa-tors (and some parents) have

the (unintentional) impres-sion that if you work with your hands that the brain is somehow disconnected. For example: Little Johnny doesn’t do well in school, maybe he should try shop class. The shop owner ac-

knowledges that being a repair technician is not for everyone,

but he strongly supports keeping shop classes available for those students who are interested. If a stu-dent enrolls in our Au-tomotive Technology program and doesn’t

like it, that’s O.K., we’re not offended. Indi-viduals need to work out their own aspira-tions in search of a suitable career or personal growth. Community college is a good place to explore different career paths without go-ing deep into debt, and vocational education offers many career paths that may or may not include a four-year college degree. Be-lieve it or not, most of the people responsi-ble for overseeing public schools do listen to the communities they serve. Reedley College has always received strong support from the community, resulting in the availability of numerous academic and vocational programs on three campuses. Reedley College started in 1926 offering 6 courses with a total of 30 stu-dents, and is now celebrating its 90th anni-versary thanks to good management decisions guided by advice from community members who care about quality education. Our shop owner has some advice for those of you who may be thinking about lob-bying for your favorite school program. The unplanned interaction at the repair shop re-sulted in a positive outcome, but trying to stage a similar demonstration is not likely to work out so well. Some people may feel like they are being manipulated, even though your intention is to persuade. The best ap-proach is to have a well-reasoned position or explanation, and be prepared to answer ques-tions or comments that may arise. Remember to be polite. It’s O.K. to display a little firm determination, but remain civil. Being loud and rude is a poor substitute for strength and determination. Keep in mind that others care just as much as you do, so don’t take it per-sonally when someone disagrees with your position. Use persuasive reasoning to change minds and be willing to listen to other view-points as well. If you display the attitude that I joke about having; “I may not always be right, but I’m never wrong” you are not likely to persuade many people.

tHe WInnInG eDGe #23 Hi everyone, the weather is warming up and the racing season is underway. Isn’t it wonderful? Through the winter and even now I am porting quite a few sets of heads for alcohol motors. Both for drag racing and circle track racing. Probably the biggest use of alcohol motors is in circle track racing so let’s look at the sprinter application first. Torque to accelerate a sprint car out of the turn is important, as is a power band wide enough to be able to cope with the one gear racing situation. Torque is largely a product of cu-bic inches and the more cubic inches, generally speaking, the better the torque will be. This means most successful sprint engines are in the 400+ ci range, thus the displacement of the engine is easily capable of outpacing the airflow of even the best cylinder head. This means the heads become of vital importance if the top end power to produce an advantage at the end of the straight is to be realized. Because of the difficulty of getting a small block port to flow enough air, it becomes almost impossible to make the port overly large for a 400+ ci engine. For a sprinter the intake port needs to be as large as possible consistent with keeping the area at its minimum point above the critical area required for the rpm band desired. With the injector nozzle being just above the intake valve no special attention needs to be paid to wet fuel flow. On carbureted alcohol motors, a different set of criteria apply. Dumping as much fuel as is required by an alcohol engine into a manifold can cause problems with fuel puddling and fuel wash. Although carbureted alcohol engines are also built to large displacements, they generally seem to perform better if the port volume is kept a little smaller than that required for a sprinter. This is true even though they will sometimes show 8-10 hp more with a big port. However, throttle response is usually not quite as good and this can be very important depending on the rpm band being used. With supercharged alcohol burning engines large volume intake ports, well-unshrouded com-bustion chambers and free-flowing exhausts are all assets. Exhaust-to-intake valve sizing needs to be considered, and the basic premise that a supercharged engine needs more exhaust flow applies, just as it does to a supercharged gasoline burning engine. If nitro-methane is being added to the alcohol for increased power, then the balance of intake valve to exhaust valve needs to be reviewed. It’s not worth doing much until nitro percentages exceed about thirty, but thereafter it’s well worth sacrificing a little intake area for added exhaust.

“Best first-year car event we have ever attended!”This was the response from many vintage automobile partici-pants and spectators in attendance, which immediately con-firmed that the Automotive Concours at Monarch Dunes Golf Course, Nipomo California, should be hosted again this year. Following a careful review of comments received from car participants and spectators, the Event Steering Commit-tee has begun preparation for an even bigger and better event on Sunday, September 24th 2017, from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Based on last year’s success, we have implemented the same “Invitational Only” approach, with each vendor and automobile entry committee-selected. This year we are tar-geting for a 30% increase in vintage and classic automobiles,

to be located amongst the rolling hills and fairways of the links-style Monarch Dunes Challenge Course, as well as se-curing first-class arts & crafts and retail vendor and food par-ticipants. Our various vendors and purveyors of mouth-watering food and boutique-crafted beer will be situated in two loca-tions on the course. The majority of vendors and food trucks will be situated on the Driving Range where everyone can enjoy daylong musical entertainment under the 1,000 sq. ft. dining canopy. Additionally, along with the $20 million dollars worth of automobiles on display, 7 outstanding local wineries will be supporting the “Wine-Walk for Charity.” Participants will receive a commemorative tasting glass to sample some of the Central Coast’s finest wines while enjoying a leisurely stroll through the various automotive displays. For those spectators and car participants who could use a bit of help getting around this beautiful venue, we have secured 6-passenger shuttle carts, to provide transportation on the course cart paths, and multi-passenger shuttle buses to transport spectators and car participants to the major areas of the event on the surface streets. All shuttle stops and event sites, along with food vendors and other points of interest, will be identified on the course and on the event map.

On Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm, we will be presenting a custom-made, one-of-a-kind award to automotive winners in each of the classes being judged. These awards are unique to the Automotive Concours at Monarch Dunes and are un-like any others seen at other car events.

And we’re not through yet! For those of you planning on escaping the long summer days’ heat of the Central Valley to enjoy a weekend just 12 miles south of Pismo Beach, on Saturday evening, the 23rd of September, we have planned a first-rate dinner dance with wine tasting and live entertain-ment under the stars at the Monarch Club, also in Nipomo and adjacent to the golf course.

So mark your calendars for Sunday the 24th of Septem-ber for the Automotive Concours at Monarch Dunes and the 23rd of September for the dinner dance. Net proceeds of this event will benefit the Nipomo Food Basket and Nipomo High School Athletic Programs through its Booster Club, both 501(c)(3) charitable organizations.
