EVENTS IN THE UNITED STATES HISTORY The American saga is rich in tumult and drama: the transformation of an untamed land into a mighty industrial power; the growth of a basically English colonial outpost into a complex multiethnic society. There have been moments of triumph and sadness. Let's mark only a few of the milestones in the long course of U.S. history. Many tribes of American Indians had been living in North America for thousands of years before European explorers arrived. 1000 Viking raider Leif Erickson discovered North America (Newfoundland). 1492 Christopher Columbus left Spain, seeking to find a sea route to the Far East, but he landed on the Caribbean islands, in San Salvador. Europeans honour him as the discoverer of America. 1497 John Cabot explored the east coast of North America for the English crown. 1500-1650 The Spaniards, French, Dutch and English founded settlements in North America. 1565 St. Augustine was founded by the Spanish in Florida. It is the oldest city in the U.S. 1607 Colonization of North America began with the establishment of the first permanent English colony Jamestown in Virginia. 1613 Virginia settlers started growing tobacco for sale and gave up searching for gold. 1619 The first group of 20 African slaves was brought to North America. 1620 The Pilgrim Fathers founded their colony at Plymouth, Massachusetts. It was the second permanent British settlement in North America. 1626 New Amsterdam was founded by the Dutch. 1636 America's first college, Harvard, was founded at Cambridge, Massachusetts. 1664 New Amsterdam was captured by the British and renamed New York. 1733 Georgia became thirteenth British colony founded in North America. 1763 Britain defeated France in the French and Indian war and gained control of eastern North America. I. Answer the following questions: Who discovered America? Who were the people that turned an almost empty continent into a nation of millions? What was the first British colony in America? What problems had to be overcome in America's past? What were the main reasons for Europeans going to America in the 16 th and 17 th centuries? If you lived in Britain in 1610, and were dissatisfied with your life, would you go to America? Why? When was slavery first introduced in the USA? II. Say which facts given in the text were new or important for you. III. Work in groups. Organize your own colony in America of the 17 th century. Think of the name for it. Make a plan of its building. Don’t forget about different factors, which can make your programme a failure: weather, Indians, other colonists… Report to the class (you may produce a poster).
