The First Grader

Drive

In a small, remote mountain top primary school in the Kenyan bush, hundreds of children are jostling for a chance for the free education newly promised by the Kenyan government.

One new applicant causes astonishment when he knocks on the door of the school. He is Maruge, an old Mau Mau veteran in his eighties, who is desperate to learn to read at this late stage of his life. He fought for the liberation of his country and now feels he must have the chance of an education so long denied - even if it means sitting in a classroom alongside six-year-olds. Moved by his passionate plea, head teacher Jane Obinchu, supports his struggle to gain admission and together they face fierce opposition from parents and officials who don’t want to waste a precious school place on such an old man.

Full of vitality and humour, the film explores the remarkable relationships Maruge builds with his classmates some eighty years his junior. Through Maruge’s journey, we are taken back to the shocking untold story of British colonial rule 50 years earlier where Maruge fought for the freedom of his country, eventually ending up in the extreme and harsh conditions of the British detention camps.

Breakout Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn (THE PUSHER Trilogy, BRONSON, VALHALLARISING) throttles into the Hollywood fast lane with the precision-crafted action caper DRIVE.

Ryan Gosling stars as a Los Angeles wheelman for hire, stunt driving for movie productions by dayand steering getaway vehicles for armed heists by night. Though a loner by nature, Driver can’t help-falling in love with his beautiful neighbour Irene, a vulnerable young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband Standard.

After a heist intended to pay off Standard’s protection money spins unpredictably out of control, Driver finds himself driving defense for the girl he loves, tailgated by a syn-dicate of deadly serious criminals. But when he realizes that the gangsters are after more than the bagof cash in his trunk—that they’re coming straight for Irene and her son—Driver is forced to shift gears and go on offense.

Albert NobbsFrom director Rodrigo Garcia (Mother and Child) ALBERT NOBBS is a witty period drama about the lives of staff at one of Dublin’s most luxurious hotels - Morrison’s - and the hotel’s butler, Albert Nobbs... a woman who disguises herself as a man to survive.19th Century Ireland: for a woman to be independent and single, she must deceive everyone - by passing as a man. Albert, a shy butler who keeps himself to himself, has been hiding a deep secret for some thirty years - ‘he’ is a woman who has had to dress and behave as a man in order to escape a life of poverty and loneliness. As Albert Nobbs begins to question the world she has created for herself, and thinks she may have found a soul-mate, she dares to hope that she might one day live a life free of secrets.

Glenn Close stars in the title role of Albert, an award-winning role she played on stage more than twenty years ago. Close puts in a remarkable, heart-rending performance as the complex character and pulls off an incredible transformation. ALBERT NOBBS is a wonderful drama full of humour, pathos and tenderness.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

Inspired by the bestselling novel SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN by Lisa See the film tells the story of seven year old girls Snow Flower and Lily, in 19th century China, who had their feet bound at the same age and on the same day, which sealed their fates together as laotongs bound together for eternity. Isolated in their marriages, they furtively communicate by taking turns writing in a secret language, nu shu, between the folds of a white silk fan. In a parallel story in present day Shanghai, the laotongs descendants, Nina and Sophia, struggle to maintain the intimacy of their own childhood friendship in the face of demanding careers, complicated love lives, and a relentlessly evolving Shanghai. Drawing on the lessons of the past, the two modern women must understand the story of their ancestral connection, hidden from them in the folds of the antique white silk fan, or risk losing one another forever. What unfolds are two stories, generations apart, but everlasting in their universal notion of love, hope and friendship.

The Duel

Beginners

The New York Times Critics’ Pick Anton Chekhov’s THE DUEL breathes new life into a classic Chekhovian tale. Working with the master cinematographer Paul Sarossy (THE SWEET HEREAFTER), director Dover Kosashvili (LATE MARRIAGE) has made a gorgeously cinematic and accessible movie that is sensuous, passionate, dramatic and peppered with delightful moments of levity inherent to the great novella. Set in a seaside resort in the Caucasus, the story centers on n’er do well, Laevsky and his illicit relationship with his mistress Nadya. Laevsky has convinced Nadya to leave her husband for him, but now wants to abandon her. A brilliant ensemble cast of British and Irish actors strikes just the right balance. “The performances are excellent all around, with Andrew Scott mesmerizing and the gorgeous Fiona Glascott making vividly clear why her character drives all men to distraction.” Hollywood Reporter

“Adultery, betrayal, blackbail, drunken antics...the most successful literary adaptation I’ve seen since...Lady Chatterley.” The Village Voice

From writer/director Mike Mills comes a comedy/drama about how deeply funny and transformative life can be, even at its most serious moments.

BEGINNERS imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Melanie Laurent) only months after his father Hal (Christopher Plummer) has passed away.

This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who - following 44 years of marriage - came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. The upheavals of Hal’s new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they’d ever been able to be.

Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humour, and hope that his father taught him.

Vanishing of the Bees

Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives.

Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and a hundred other fruits & vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables.

VANISHING OF THE BEES follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. The film explores the struggles they face as the two friends plead their case on Capital Hill and travel across the Pacific Ocean in the quest to protect their honeybees. Filming across the US, in Europe, Australia and Asia, this documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between mankind and mother earth. As scientists puzzle over the cause, organic beekeepers indicate alternative reasons for this tragic loss. Conflicting options abound and after years of research, a definitive answer has not been found to this harrowing mystery.

Rat-Viva Riva!Riva is a small time operator who has just returned to his hometown of Kinshasa, Congo after a decade away with a major score: a fortune in hijacked gasoline.

Wads of cash in hand and out for a good time, Riva is soon entranced by beautiful night club denizen Nora, the kept woman of a local gangster. Into the mix comes an Angolan crime lord relentlessly seeking the return of his stolen shipment of gasoline. Director Djo Tunda Wa Munga’s Kinshasa is a seductively vibrant, lawless, fuel-starved sprawl of shantytowns, gated villas, bordellos and nightclubs and Riva is its perfect embodiment.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams

Iconic director Werner Herzog takes us deep behind the frontier of an extraordinary place. Having gained unprecedented access through the tightest of restrictions and overcome considerable technical challenges, he has captured on film, the interior of the Chauvet Cave in southern France. This is where the world’s oldest cave paintings – hundreds in number - were discovered in 1994. In the mesmerising CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, he reveals to us a breathtaking subterranean world and leads us to the 32,000-year-old artworks. In that deeply moving moment of encounter, we come face to face with pristine and astonishingly realistic drawings of horses, cattle and lions, which for the briefest second come alive in the torchlight. In true Herzogian fashion, his hypnotically engaging narration weaves in wider metaphysical contemplations as we learn more about the Paleolithic art and its creators. Through his understated and gently humorous voiceover, we are invited to reflect on our primal desire to communicate and represent the world around us, evolution and our place within it, and ultimately what it means to be human.

Brother Number OneBROTHER NUMBER ONE follows Kiwi Rob Hamill, an Olympic and Trans-Atlantic rowing champion, to Cambodia where he seeks justice for his brother Kerry who was tortured and murdered in 1978.

Kerry had been on board his yacht Foxy Lady with two others when they anchored near the Cambodian coast to shelter from a storm. They had sailed unknowingly from the hippie era of “love and freedom” into Year Zero. Along with Englishman John Dewhirst, Kerry was seized and tortured for two months at the Khmer Rouge slaughterhouse, Tuol Sleng (S21). It was during the Atlantic row, 41 days of solitude at sea, that Rob began to properly grieve.

Some years later, he heard there was to be a war crimes tribunal in Cambodia and he decided to participate. As well as giving his statement in court, Rob discovers the most probable scenario surrounding the capture, incarceration, and murder of his brother. He travels with Cambodian translator Kulikar Sotho, a survivor who tells her story in parallel with Rob’s. Rob’s journey ends in a confrontation in court with Comrade Duch, former Commander at S-21, who ordered Kerry and John’s torture and death. 14,000 Cambodians met the same end at S-21.

Just your standard detective story right?

Well no, because both men are now in their seventies. Murray’s crime scene is Knightsbridge Gardens, a rest home where life is anything but restful, and where the residents are determined to go out with a bang instead of a whimper. When one of the residents dies, Murray is convinced it’s murder. As the body count begins to rise, Murray must put his own life in danger, breaking out all the old skills to compile enough evidence to nail his man.

Kiwi comedy drama starring Tony Barry, Ilona Rodgers, Irene Wood, John Bach, Ian Mune, Elizabeth McRea and Teresa Woodham.
