Ellie Davies31 March – 13 MayAdmission Free

We are delighted to host Ellie Davies’ first solo exhibition in Northern Ireland/Ireland. Based in Southern England, Ellie has been working in UK forests since 2007, making award-winning photography which explores the complex interrelationship between the landscape and the individual. The forest represents the confluence of nature and culture, of natural landscape and human activity. They are potent symbols in folklore, fairy tale and myth, places of enchantment and magic as well as danger and mystery and have also come to be associated with psychological states relating to the unconscious.

Against this cultural backdrop, Ellie’s work explores the fabricated nature of landscape by making a variety of temporary and non-invasive interventions in the forest. She makes and builds using found materials, creates pools of light on the forest floor, uses craft materials such as paint and wool and has also introduced starscapes taken by the Hubble telescope.

Ellie is represented by Susan Spiritus Gallery in Newport Beach, California, A.Galerie in Paris, Sophie Maree Gallery in The Netherlands, Brucie Collections in Kiev, Art Gemini in Singapore and Crane Kalman Brighton Gallery in the UK.

Gold, jewellery, fine cloths, personal protection, battles for land, destruction of the forests, industrialisation… all may sound familiar in today’s headlines. However, our fascination with material possessions and the power struggles that result began, according to archaeologists, with the Bronze Age. Bronze Age communities have left us with not only their stone monuments but fascinating hordes of weapons, grave goods and tools. This exhibition by Council’s Museum Service explores the Bronze Age in the Causeway Region and displays many of the great archaeologist discoveries from this region.

Autobiographical Series and 11 Drypoints

Louise Bourgeois A Hayward Touring exhibition from Southbank Centre20 May – 21 June, Admission Free

Since she was honoured with a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1982, Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) has been widely acclaimed as one of the most original artists of the late twentieth century and has exhibited at museums throughout the world, including at Tate Modern in 2007.

Best known for her powerful emotionally charged sculptures - enclosed ‘cell’ or cage-like installations and fabric figures – she was also a prolific printmaker and draughtswoman. Bourgeois taught printmaking at the School of Visual Arts, New York and said of it ‘the whole history of the creative process is there’.

Most of the French-American artist’s work dealt with strongly autobiographical themes, invoking her childhood emotions of loneliness, desire, anxiety and jealousy. Autobiographical Series (1994) consists of 14 etchings illustrating some of her deepest thoughts and memories whilst the 11 Drypoints (all from 1999) bring her obsessions into more vivid focus. Recurrent themes, such as a woman giving birth, a cat, ladders, long hair, feet, clocks, scissors, bathtubs and a pregnant mosquito all contain references to her emotional biography.

After many years of focusing primarily on sculpture, Bourgeois turned back to printmaking in the 1980s and continued to produce prints until her death in 2010. The two collections of works in this exhibition were made when she was in her eighties, after installing a small press in her own home. *Free Talk - Louise Bourgeois: Her Life and Work. Curator and art historian Marianne O’Kane-Boal provides a talk on Thursday 8 June, 2-3pm. Suitable for students and art enthusiasts. Free but please book your place in advance.*For school visits, an education pack is available. *For families, worksheets and drawing materials will be available in galleries*Please see our Creative Courses section on pages 12-15 for an exciting range of accompanying workshops for children and adults, including printmaking by the Derry Print Workshop.

Between April and December there will be a series of daytime mosaic workshops open to those who are over 55 and who would like to learn a new skill. This is part of the Council’s commitment to offering arts projects to groups and individuals who do not normally have access to arts workshops.

This project is funded by the Council and by The Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s Arts and Older People programme. If you or your group would like to take part please telephone Elaine Gaston, Cultural Services Development Officer for further information on 028 2076 2225.
