Cover Art: “Mallorca Market” Cover Artist Anne Faught: "Doing art is the way I have always integrated experiences; bringing the outside to the inside, the inside to the outside, the invisible to the visible. It is a powerful vehicle for me and I love working on that ambiguous edge. My drawings tend to be realistic, my paintings pushing into more numinous realms."

fall/winter event summary

Dear Friends, As I write this, the sound of Summer

Camp fills the Dance Palace with joyous chaos as our campers celebrate Alice-in-Wonderland Day. There is croquet on the lawn complete with pink flamingos. The Queen of Hearts is supervising the creation of cucumber sandwiches and hosting high tea. And the Mad Hatter is crafting a teacup in ceramics class.

But by the time you read our Fall Bulletin, camp will be just a memory and, happily, so will some of the unusual challenges we were met with this summer. The Dance Palace has been engaged in issues about homelessness and our relationship with the larger community. We’ve also had some staffing transitions. On the positive side, this has given us a chance to restructure and redefine jobs, and find renewal.

Now we are moving ahead with efficiency, optimism, and energy. At the end of August we closed for a week to refinish the floors

and freshen up paint. Thanks to the money raised at our annual Awards Banquet and the Fund-a-Flush live auction item, we will be able to remodel the restrooms. We’re very grateful to everyone who contributed to that effort.

This fall, pianist Sarah Cahill and violinist Kate Stenberg bring us a sterling program with works by Brahms, Mozart, and Debussy. Will Durst will chronicle the 2016 presidential primaries with his one-man show “Elect to Laugh” and provide some much-needed humor this election cycle. And, as always, we have a wide selection of classes and community events to inform, inspire, or keep you in shape.

Come join us!

Warm Regards,Alison Marks, Executive Director

4 Dance Palace FALL/WINTER 2016 www.dancepalace.org

The Dance Palace will be filled all weekend long with the sights, sounds, and scents of the winter holidays. This year promises to be a warm and wonderful event with a special focus on “Made in West Marin” handcrafted items and gifts—ceramics, chocolates, clothing, fiber arts, glasswork, herbs, metal & woodwork, jams & jellies, jewelry, oils, ornaments, paintings, soaps, toys, and so much more.

Come and celebrate a West Marin holiday tradition!

The Holiday Crafts Fair was first held nearly 50 years ago, and since that time the vibrant arts and crafts communities of West Marin and beyond have come together annually to display their talents and offer their treasures for sale. On Friday night Point Reyes merchants will remain open late, and downtown will be aglow with luminaries and a tree lighting. And Santa might just make an appearance.

The Holiday Crafts Fair is sponsored by and benefits the Dance Palace Community & Cultural Center, a non-profit community center serving children, adults, and seniors in western Marin County.

SEPTEMBERSARAH CAHILL & KATE STENBERG IN CONCERT This fall, the Dance Palace presents pianist Sarah Cahill and violinist Kate Stenberg in a program that includes works by Brahms, Mozart, and Debussy, as well as early 20th century modernists Henry Cowell, Ruth Crawford, and Alan Jovhaness. Why combine beloved classical works with unfamiliar 20th century compositions? Because in juxtaposition, the classical pieces can sound surprisingly modern, and the 20th century pieces resonate with echoes of the past. Mozart's "B-flat major Sonata, K. 454" seems almost avant garde at times, while Cowell's 1945 Sonata is full of the Irish jigs and dances he loved as a child growing up in the Bay Area, and one movement, the Ballad, sounds amazingly like "Danny Boy." Hovhanness' appealing "Khirgiz Suite" evokes traditional instruments from Kyrgyzstan, and Ruth Crawford (also known as Ruth Crawford Seeger, stepmother and inspiration to Pete Seeger) shows us that dissonance can be playful, powerful, and revolutionary. This program also shows the continuation of musical progress: when Debussy wrote his visionary "Sonata for Violin and Piano" in 1917, the teenaged Henry Cowell was already shocking audiences with his raucous San Francisco concerts.

Cahill, called “a sterling pianist and an intrepid illuminator of the classical avant-garde” by The New York Times, has commissioned, premiered, and recorded numerous compositions for solo piano. Composers who have dedicated works to her include John Adams, Terry Riley, Frederic Rzewski, Pauline Oliveros, Julia Wolfe, Yoko Ono, and Evan Ziporyn, and she has also premiered pieces by Lou Harrison, Ingram Marshall, Toshi Ichiyanagi, George Lewis, Leo Ornstein, and many others.

Kate Stenberg’s solo violin playing has been described by “New Music Box” as “highly virtuosic and deeply communicative…full of character and presence.” Her acclaimed CD, Scenes from a New Music Séance with pianist Eva-Maria Zimmermann, released by Other Minds in 2012, includes several world premieres and assorted new music—a genre to which she has been deeply committed.Sunday, September 18 / 2 PM / $20

WILL DURST “ELECT TO LAUGH”In his hilarious new one-man show, “Elect to Laugh,” Will Durst chronicles America’s torturously amusing path through the 2016 presidential primaries, debates, ads, mud, spin, tears, flip-flops, and flop-flips. Acknowledged by peers and press alike as one of the premier political satirists in the country, Durst stalks the election cycle for 80 hilarious minutes as he reflects on a race that has spawned some of the most fertile, febrile, and fecund campaigns in history—for mocking, scoffing, and taunting purposes, that is. “PLUTOCRACY”A new musical show by composer Dale Polissar, whose satire of the Bush administration, “By George, It's War!,” got standing ovations here andat the 142 Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley. “Plutocracy”—debuting in "concert" form with five singers and a narrator—imagines what transpires when the head of a global oil and power corporation dies, and, to everyone's surprise, leaves control of the company to his young idealistic hippy poet son. The boy's powerful CEO uncle is determined to stop him. In a style that’s engaging and entertaining, "Plutocracy" takes on money in politics, racism, inequality, global warming, the fate of the earth—phew!—in catchy songs that are witty, playful, and moving. Protecting The Dance Palace For Future GenerationsThe Dance Palace would like to thank and recognize a gift from the estate of Norman Masonson, a long-time friend of the Dance Palace who brought his musical virtuosity to the community for many years as the conductor of our annual Sing-Along Messiah. By naming the Dance Palace in his estate, Norman helped secure our continued efforts to serve the West Marin community for generations to come. His vision and generosity ensures the long term success of the Dance Palace and its programs.

If you have provided for the Dance Palace in your estate plan, please share this information with us—we would like to thank you for your expression of confidence in the work we do. We would also like to welcome you to contribute to the Dance Palace Legacy Fund, and be a part of a group of individuals, who through their estate gifts, secure a bright future for the Dance Palace. For more information please contact Executive Director Alison Marks at [email protected] or 415-663-1075.
