Audio-Video introduction of '50 Years Feluda' and 'Film Festival'. 8:15pm - 8:30pm, Jul 7 Rabindra Sadan (Main Stage)

Audio-Video introduction of '50 Years Feluda' and 'Film Festival'. Fifty years ago, Satyajit Ray brought aBengali detective, Pradosh C. Mitter to life through a story in a children’s magazine. Pradosh C. Mitter’scousin Tapesh Ranjan Mitra called him ‘Feluda’ lovingly. Feluda, introduced as a 27 year old, lived in ajoint family in old Calcutta and had a special bond with his teenage cousin. He also had a penchant ofcuriosity and an uncanny ability to think and solve some of the most difficult mysteries. Today, fiftyyears later, perhaps few other characters in Bengali fiction stir as much feelings in the young and theold alike as Feluda. Feluda has become an icon of the ‘Bangla Sleuth’!! As our dear ‘Feluda’ completesfifty celebratory years, we thought it would be a fitting tribute to Satyajit Ray’s creation to celebrate thisicon during our celebration in July in the San Francisco North America Bengali Conference. We will becelebrating ‘Fifty Years of Feluda’ at the conference over Saturday, July 8 th and Sunday, July 9 th witha special ‘Feluda’ exhibit specially put together by Satyajit Ray’s son and famous director Sandip Rayhimself. We will also be screening several ‘Feluda’ movies notably ‘Sonar Kella’, ‘Bombaeir Bombeteh’,‘Kailashe Kelenkari’ among others. And, the audience will have an opportunity to have a one-on- oneinteractive adda with director Sandip Ray, with ‘Feluda’, with ‘Topseh’ and with others..

Sato Konthe Rabindranath 11:00am - 11:30am, Jul 8 Kalamandir

In keeping with the spirit of BangaShammelan experience to the fullest, Bangaliyana and its magic, singers from all over United States, unite on stage and present Rabindrasangeet as Choir, beautifullywoven together by verses and poetry. In 2015 , a handful of ardent Tagore lovers thought ofcomplementing the NABC for the first time ever in its history , with a rendition of Tagore songs in a truechoral form in defiance of the traditional style. This type of choral comprising 100 singers was oncethought to be only achievable back home where all the singers were available in one city and under oneguide. But here in the United States, this idea of coordinating 100 singers from various states, rehearsethem and deliver a quality production was viewed as a weird imagination! But good intention, determination, perseverance and love for Tagore made it possible. The SKR program was executedunder the overall direction of Kamalpriya Roy, an alumnus of the Visva-Bharati University atSantiniketan, a dedicated singer and teacher of Tagore songs in the Houston area. This year thesingers predominantly from the San Francisco Bay area have taken the most initiative because of theevent’s geographical location. As of 2017, the title Shatakanthe Rabindranath (SKR) and its production

Chalo Jaye Srijane-- musical -- LA 1:30pm - 2:10pm, Jul 8 Kalamandir

Modern man has become estranged from nature. Trapped in a self-created echo chamber of Facebook,Twitter and Instagram accounts, he has enclosed himself in a solipsistic bubble that alienates him fromhuman community. His isolation is further exacerbated by the destruction of nature in an age of rapidindustrial expansion. Nature has become its collateral damage. It is under attack by Global warming, climate change, and deforestation. So what should be our response to this dire scenario? Ourpresentation this evening spells out an escape route from despair to hope. Blake once asserted,"Nature is imagination itself". We must reclaim Nature and thereby repossess the world of imagination. We must rediscover the poetry of trees, the magic of song, and the warmth of human company. It willtake effort and commitment, but we have to, we must! As Gandhiji had urged, “become the change youwant to see in the world." So, this evening we take our cue from him, "Jodi tor daak shuney keu naaashey tone akla cholo rey"! Yes we can! Yes we will. The audacity of hope is stubborn, it endures, andit prevails. Nature teaches us by its perennial rhythms--If winter is here, can spring be far be behind? Occupy Wal-Mart: Natok-- Utsav 11:15am - 12:00pm, Jul 9 Academy of Fine Arts

Description : Occupy Wal-Mart is a Bengali adaptation of “Can't Pay? Won't Pay!” originally written inItalian by Nobel Laureate (1996) playwright Dario Fo in 1974. Based on an actual workers' uprising inMilan in 1974, the play is a comedy about consumer backlash against high prices and regarded as Fo'sbest-known play internationally after ‘Accidental Death of an Anarchist’. Within next 15 years, it hadbeen translated and performed in 35 countries around the globe. The play centers around twohousewives who joined a direct action by women by helping themselves to “five-finger discounts” in thegrocery store. To hide the merchandise grabbed on unauthorized credit from police and husbands, thehousewives resort to various hilarious antics. This leads to a tangle of improbable twists and turns andembarrassing situations that require more and more elaborate lies from the housewives - all theingredients required for a classic farce. While rebuked by the husbands for ‘stealing goods,’ thehousewives justify their action by pointing to a lack of initiative by mainstream lawmakers to combat theincreasing cost of living and depressed wages, highlighting the message intertwined in the texture ofthe play. This play was first translated to English in 1975 by Lino Pertile. The Bengali translation andadaptation of the play is by Manas Ray and will be directed by Somen Nandi. Spectacular closing ceremony. Far from the land of Bengal, it’s people residing on foreign lands aredistant from the exuberant touch of it’s roots, where the young spirits are unaware of the mesmerizingculture and traditions. Through technology and innovations they suffice their eagerness, to learn, toexplore, the magic that lies in the greenery of the countryside, or the music of the minstrels, or thecolourful seasons, or enigmatic festivals, of literature and art, of diversity and harmony that needs to beinculcated within. The emotional ties of the heart, flowing through the deep venous mortal self, conjoinsthe soul to it’s origin, even if one is miles away from the enthralling and charismatic effect of WestBengal, rejoicing in the spectrum of variance.
