2013 SWINE TAGGING EVENT (4/5 - 4/6) Swine Tagged for Adair County Fair Adair County 4-H swine project area is holding steady. Adair County 4-H and FFA members tagged 166 pigs, one pig short of last year’s total, as part of the countywide tagging. These pigs are now eligible to exhibit at the 2013 Adair County Fair. The county fair swine show is slated for Thursday, July 18 th . The following twenty-nine youth identified pigs: Brad Baudler, Joe and Annie Herr, Taylor Brown, Messina Miller, Alex Welsch, and Dean Frank, Fontanelle; Hannah Jorgensen and Josh Irlmeier, Adair; Alyssa Christensen, Laura Walker, Charlie Ruhland, and Tim and Sara Beane, Stuart; Nathan Venteicher, and Matthew, Kyra, and Alan Evans, Bridgewater; Bailee Huddleson and Mark Cooley, Orient; Beau and Reagan Weinheimer, Greenfield; Ashley West, Prescott; Jacob and Cody Mertz, Redfield; and Halee Wallace, Heath, Kysa, and Chisum Downing, Creston. Besides tagging pigs, volunteers weighed 61 entries for the annual performance contest sponsored by the Adair County Pork Producers. Entries in the performance contest are placed on lean gain per day on test which takes into account both the rate of gain and carcass merit. Carcass merit is deter- mined using ultrasound. Twenty-three pigs were tagged with a special DNA ear tag making them eligible for the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Bailee Huddleson, Joe and Annie Herr, and Beau and Reagan Weinheimer verified pigs for the state fair 4-H swine show. Volunteers responsible for tagging and weighing pigs included Brian Rohrig, Orient; Nick and Pais- ley Kintigh; Andrew Noland, Greg Lilly, and Lynn and Hank Bohling, Greenfield; Dan Westphal, Bridgewater; and Dick and Donna Wallace, Orient. There is still time to join 4-H and complete a project. 4-H memberships for the current year will be accepted up to May 15. Members interested in exhibiting animals can still sign-up for and identify sheep, meat goats, dairy goats, dairy, breeding beef, cow-calf pairs, bucket calves, cats, dogs, hors- es, rabbits, and poultry.
