Dubai Never Looked So Good

Talk about eye candy overload! The first-ever Fashion Forward

came and went in a glamorous blur - my senses are still struggling

to catch up to a flurry of need-to-wear-it surprises. Needless to

say, we have your front row seat to the runways and after-parties

with our exclusive event coverage on page 45.

As the dust settles, I take a breath and flip through notebooks full

of photos and scribblings, thinking….what do I make of it all? The

event’s resounding success signals another leap in this city’s style

evolution, but I wonder what it’s going to take for Dubai to cement

its place as the next globally recognized fashion capital. Cities

that take the fashion world by storm don’t just consume from the

outside – they focus on leveraging and buying from locally grown

proponents that have a stark identity. Many of us have developeda mental muscle that instinctively only purchases from certain

international brand names or places; it’s a reflex that stems from

marketing and perception. However, our buying decisions should

always come down to talent, and Fashion Forward proved that

Dubai has it in spades.

Case in point: Azza Al Qubaisi. You’ve never heard of her, but the

stars aligned and I wound up at a shoot in Fujairah – directed by

Soniya, a totally chic and witty friend of mine – with this little-

known designer & artist. Azza focuses on imbuing her pieces with

Emirati culture; I was inspired by the way her jewelry uses time-

honored techniques to transform materials such as palm branches,

asphalt, and gemstones. She draws inspiration from the local

environment, resulting in designs that are as culturally rich as theyare stunning. Azza also helps people outside the fashion orbit get

involved in design. For instance, she has trained local fishermen to

re-purpose elements of their craft, such as wires & weaving, into

sensational pieces full of heritage. You’ll never find these gems on

the shelves at Harrods or Barney’s, but this is authenticity at its

finest. Azza takes my praise in stride and just shrugs, “it’s my turn

to give back to my country what it’s given to me.”

I’m as crazy about the renowned European and American fashion

houses as the next gal, but if Dubai is to become a fashion

powerhouse, we need to consciously nurture our homegrown

talent. So take a look at our hottest UAE-based designers inside

and if you like what you see, vote with your wallet to support

designers like Fadwa Baruni and El Jammi Gozalli. It’s win-win: if

we embrace them, we’ll thrust Dubai further onto the world stageand look fabulous while doing it.

Let’s return to my original question - what’s it going to take to

cement Dubai’s place on the global fashion landscape? You. You

are the irreplaceable engine, so wear and flaunt your Emirati style

as you travel through life. Next time I hit the stores, I’m going to

shop with a purpose and keep talents like Azza in mind. Soon

enough, ladies from Paris & London will be turning to Dubai for

inspiration, just as Dubai turns to them.

Glamor swing is likely to be in the mood of a

young kid – he giggles, he shrieks, he screams,

he listens and he refuses to calm down when

is asked to. Fashion has this ability of sharing

similar traits as it is also vivacious, submissive and

flamboyant with big floral prints; it tails the flavor

and adds fragrance in the air and makes its moveon runways. Fashion’s enduring love affair with

floriated patterns continues for Spring 2013 with

uncountable designers presenting their take on

the iconic pattern. Wrap your inner lady in soft

pastel colors and vibrant hues. Dresses, swimsuits,

shoes and even sunspecs, all in floral designs that

will give you that blossomy impression with a

deviation of a fresh theme.

The floral print trend has been in full

coloration for Spring 2013 but this time it

is brought with gigantic floral motifs that

even include 3D designs. Many designers

have showcased the floral prints on the catwalk this

season. Erdem, the king of floral prints, adapted

his signature 3D appliques in sorbet hues which

caught the eye of A-list Hollywood celebs. Floweryprinted pants, mini-dresses, skirts and tops are the

essentials for keeping yourself chic and stylish. This

trend also made quite the scene all over the runway

of Fashion Forward Season 1 in Dubai. It’s all about

having fun with fashion and acceptance of the bliss

and romance of spring, which may very well be the

reason floral patterns never get forgotten.

“If you’re going to San Francisco be sure to wear

some flowers.”

These flower printed apparels and accessories add

the vintage touch and grace to your personality.

Flowers are blossoming not just on the same cliché

items but its everywhere i.e. bags, shoes, head

wraps, earrings and even on those tiny fashion bits

that you never imagined could lug an assortment of

nicely aromatic roses and buds.

In 2013, floral prints have been worn and cherished

by many iconic singers like Katy Perry, Adele or

Vanessa Hudgen. Moreover, Kate Middelton has

trailed the flowery trend by wearing an Erdem

patterned blue silk floral dress by Sophia Visconti on

a recent occasion in London. Vegetal motifs, simple

red barrels, artistic gardens, colorful tress, spring

tulips are the essence of glamorous style. Floral

prints are a definitive form of scented garbs and

regardless of year or season, they will never get old.

Bright, perky, bold, valiant and

cheery fuchsia is the intense

and passionate pink that

marks all other colors insipid in

comparison. Pink naturally is labelled a

color of femininity but with power which

gives an extra air of thrill to your look.

Berry colors are so popular this season

In a blink, Dubai has become a fashion

contender on the world stage, with an

eye to rival London, Milan, New York

and Paris. Its secret weapon? A handful

of impossibly talented designers whose

styles leap off the page & demand to be

worn. Proving at Fashion Forward that

its ambition is matched by substance,

Dubai is finally ready for its close-up.

It’s no secret that Dubai is a success story for the history

books. A unique blend of attributes transformed a petite

desert speck into a cosmopolitan juggernaut boasting the

largest fountain, mall, and building anywhere in the globe.

While Dubai has made a similar splash across various

industries, from tourism and finance to construction, our

fashion acumen had to be earned over time. Since 2006,

Fashion Week has been steadily raising the bar, shining a

light on the evolution of this melting pot’s styles.

In the following pages, Eveningz profiles 11 of the most

promising designers in the region that Dubai had the privilege

of hosting. Flip through and glimpse our hottest regional and

local designers. Industry influencers, retail buyers, academic

heads, celebrities and fashion decision-makers renewed

their fashion affair with Fashion Forward’s first season held

at Madinat Jumeirah. As Lama El-Moatassem (Toujouri), one

of the participating designers, said:

“I would hope to see more collections from established

Middle Eastern designers paving the way and setting an

example and a standard for emerging talent. It’s important

to engage with the region’s influencers and retailers to help

the local strengths. This reduces the pressure of showcasing

at international Fashion Weeks due to lack of support.”

Fashion Forward’s efforts to escalate Dubai’s fashion standing

to the heights of the big 4 were not in vain. We may not be

at their level yet, but the “Sheikh Zayed Road” of our fashion

platform is well on the way.

CELINE DER TOROSSIAN

Armenian designer Celine Der Torossian grew up in

Beirut where she studied at ESMOD. Shortly after, she

trained with Infinitif at Elie Saab’s showroom in Paris

and completed her one-year degree in Graphic Design

in London’s Central Saint Martins. Interning with Giles

Deacon was Torossian’s next move before returning

to Lebanon in 2012 where she launched AZADE

(meaning ‘free’ in Armenian). The same year she was

discovered and selected by the Starch Foundation toform a part of their 2012-2013 designers lineup, thanks

to which she was one of the centers of Dubai’s eye at

Fashion Forward.

Celine’s geometric rhapsody of confidence, inspired by

Art Deco and tribal motifs, strutted its stuff in black

spandex and primary colors. “The style and cuts are

sharp and geometrical” she explained, “it has a feel

of a second skin, a bit like wearing a wetsuit; it’s a

translation of my theme Creatures of the Sea .” Today’s

bold woman isn’t afraid of creating strong statements

through her outfits that combine ancestry and

modernity, and neither is Celine.

Celine is one deep lady. She feels that designing issynonymous with breathing creatively every season.

“Fashion is how I express my views and understanding

of past trends and cultures. This is what opens the

doors to design for the future.” Keeping her cultural

adaptations in mind, Eveningz couldn’t help but ask

about her Dubai fashion scene thoughts – “I was

pleasantly surprised to see that Dubai is a melting

pot in fashion. I like that it’s a mix of European and

oriental styles. That is really what makes it special, I

was expecting to see a lot of fashion victims… and

it wasn’t the case. I think Dubai needs to keep its

oriental and cultural feel with a twist of European and

modern flair.”

HUSSEIN BAZAZA

“Fashion reflects the life inside my head, it’s a story I

made where I create characters and scenes, feelings

and emotions. It’s my personal world...a creepy one.”

Young Lebanese Bazaza’s taste for art extends far

beyond fashion design (which he pursued at ESMOD,

Beirut). He’s savored several artistic fields, including

photography, illustration and artistic direction. With

his numerous talents, he landed an internship in the

fashion capital – Paris – with Maison Rabih Kayrouz

and later with Elie Saab in Beirut. Skill, aptitude and

perseverance lead to his title as Professor of FashionDesign at the university that so perfectly groomed

him. He didn’t go unnoticed by the Starch Foundation,

which selected him in December 2012 and he launched

his prêt-à-porter line.

Bazaza’s collection was quite literally based on a mix

of the designer’s feelings. “I did it when I was in a state

of mind where I was feeling nothing, or lots of things,

I really don’t know...that’s why I called it NOTHING.

Nothing is a personal concept far from anyone’s reach.

Only you and I can understand it upon looking at the

collection. And with everything, I found nothing.”

His dramatic and asymmetrical take on glamour

captivated Fashion Forward. With conventionaldogmas thrown out the window, his oversized sleeves

embellishing three distinctively diverse jackets were

perfectly fitting to those with thirst for originality.

Traces of nobility made a subtle appearance in details

like golden waist belts and a brocade bodice. Often

enough, foresights of the future can be pointblank

disturbing – need we really recap 1990’s Total Recall

style? – but Bazaza’s bold futuristic touches were a

positive surprise.

His participation in this season one of Fashion Forward

exceeded our expectations and was definitely one to

remember. And speaking of expectations, our beloved

designer had some of his own: “Fashion Forward, was

far beyond anything we expected. The entire event

was very well organized and professional. The bar has

been set for season two where we expect more.”

Dubai-based Usbek designer, Yokut Schmid, is

contemporary fashion label WHYESSE’s creator. In

2005 the brand was founded in Switzerland as a

trademark but established its business identity in the

UAE. Yokut’s love for the arts and nature has strongly

translated into her pieces through texture variation,

color enhancement and fabric durability.

Yokut feels that in fashion one should choose abeautiful item by following his/her heart. “Choosing the

right garment is like choosing a piece of art. When we

choose a great artwork we don’t buy it immediately,

rather only when we can’t stop thinking about this

beautiful piece. But fashion can be an illusion and we

must try to make it reality.” The exception however,

may be the one trend Dubai should do away with as

she expressed, “huge handbags must go…. but keep

loving colorful trendy shoes!”

Her collection ‘The Great Silk Road: Luxury Travel

through an Ancient Land’ was inspired by the colors,

fabrics and travels of China’s traderoutes from the

Middle East to Europe. The goal? To create pioneering

concepts that stand the test of time while carryingforth the wealth of creative intellect rooted in oriental

culture. The designs are highly adaptable to the point

of complementing wearers of both traditional and

contemporary preferences.

The eclectic designs and oriental tendencies left us

with a question, what designers inspire this designer

with extravagant proposals? “My Favorite designers

are: Gianfranco Ferre, Yohji Yamamoto, Marc Jacobs,

Dries Van Noten and Giambattista Valli. They do not

have an effect on my own personal style but I love the

intelligence behind their concepts.”

“I believe the finishing is what makes or breaks a piece

of clothing.”

After moving to Kenya, Lebanese designer Rani

Zakhem was always attracted to Nairobi’s natural

beauty and vibrant colors. Fascinated by aesthetics,

Rani graduated with a double degree in interior design

and economics. It was only after earning his first two

degrees that he pursued his love for fashion at Parsons

in New York. In 2009, Zakhem began his own label.

As one of Valentino’s sophistication followers, Zakhem

understands elegance. His work definitely reflects his

personal fashion taste and though he follows trends

he always makes it a point to add his personal touches

to remain faithful to the Zakhem brand image. His

assertive collection displayed 38 looks inspired by Ava

Gardner and Madonna’s “material girl” era. It reveals

opulent prêt-à-porter, couture and bridals gowns. Hiswork depicts feminine and body conscious cocktail

dresses, an array of flowing fish tail gowns and draped

chiffon skirts with thigh high slits. The premier luxury

collection conveys a message of strong sophistication

with a chic attitude. “I was very excited to showcase

my collection in Fashion Forward. I always knew the

event would be successful and create a huge buzz.”

“I have always been interested in fashion” said the

young designer. “For as long as I can remember,

since childhood, I altered my mom’s clothes and

helped her pick outfits out.” Lebanese designer Rami

Kadi has always been passionate about the fashion

arena. When he finished high school he had already

decided to pursue his calling and devote his life to

a career in fashion. “Today, fashion represents my

everything. It is my lifestyle, my professional path, and

my ambitions.” It was no surprise when he graduated

with honors from ESMOD, Beirut, in 2008 and went

on to work alongside Rabih Kayrouz and Geroges

Chakra. The Starch Foundation then selected Rami

in the same year after which he showcased his first

and second collection. In 2010, he co-opened a luxury

multi-brand boutique “Madame Muguet,” where his

own designs were carried alongside other renown

Lebanese designers. Rami’s swift popularity in the

couture designers’ elite circle lead Rami to open his

first Beirut-based boutique and atelier in May 2011.

Rami feels that a quality article of clothing is a

complete package, one where “every detail is carefully

and neatly carried out. From the choice of material,

to the design, cuts, and finishing. Everything has to

be flawless.” And flawless it was! Elegant, feminine

and eye-catching. Fashion Forward welcomed Kadi’s

haute couture collection “Les Jardins Suspendus”

which stemmed from fresh summery concepts. Lace

bouquets and embroidered flowers amalgamatedamong pastel waves of rule and refined fabrics.

Dream-figured fairytale-like dresses took a ruffled

center stage in varying length satins, silk crepes and

tulle. “You can feel the spring air and summer breeze

blowing through the layers of fabric, highlighting the

fluidity and the movement of the dresses” said Rami.

The fabrics, cuts and attention to detail definitely

made the Rami Kadi name a Fashion Forward highlight

we couldn’t stop talking about. Even Lebanese singer

Myriam Fares couldn’t peel her eyes away from her

favorite designer’s collection.

Dubai certainly hopes to see more of Rami and we think

he wants to see more of us after labeling our beloved

Emirate “the upcoming fashion hub of the Gulf.”“Dubai has potential to compete with international

fashion scenes as it reconciles between the traditional

Gulf, Arabic taste and modern international trends.”

Toujouri is the Arabic word for treasure chest and its

riches are a product of Lama El-Moatassem’s creative

mind. After studying at London College of Fashion and

working for international brands such as Chloe, Lama

launched the Qatari label Toujouri almost 4 years

ago. Each and every design stems from the creator’s

desire to craft modern East-meets-West pieces that

convey glamour and sensuality. Maintaining a distinct

signature, this fashion house focuses on draping and

structure of eveningwear pieces. Not only has it’s

luxurious tailoring been launched in Doha’s flagship

store, but to name a few, it’s also glitzed its way into

Harrods London, Harvey Nichols Riyadh, S*uce, Escape

Eveningz (Al Hama Group), Maison Sez Abu Dhabi, Al-

douj Kuwait and Tokyo at Baycrews in Japan.

Toujouri is a part of the designer’s very being and

she loves seeing it grow. Being an artist, she sees

the importance in recognizing that the business side

is equally as important as the designs themselves.

“Being a great designer goes far beyond just loving

fashion, and I relish the challenge of balancing it all

and being involved in every aspect of this business”

said Lama.

Inspired by a mystical winter forest light, Toujouri’sAW2013 collection left Fashion Forward with a taste

of elegance and glamour. Such an organic inspiration

was translated through modern clear plastic details and

opalesque fabrics harmonizing with discrete necklines.

Touches of transparencies and metallic power with

a play on textures and hues of royal blue, silver and

black resonated quite noticeably with Lama’s original

inspiration. “For SS13 we collaborated with visual artist

Bea Kayani” she explained. “Her work revolves around

reflection in nature. We used 2 of her images to create

this season’s prints. The embroideries tie in with rich

textural surfaces and contrasts between flat and 3-d,

matt as well as opalescent. It’s about contrasts and

viewing nature through a unique eye.”

Synonymous with luxury, the proud holder of New

York’s WGSN Global Fashion Awards 2011 Breakthrough

Designer title is no doubt Swarvoski’s partner in fashion,

Michael Cinco. We love McQueen and Tisci just as

much as Cinco, but it’s his work the Arab Gulf’s stylish

royalties have come to love over quite some time. The

seriously chic and forward designer hasn’t stopped

there. His innate creativity and ever-bolder couture

style have made him one of Hollywood’s favorites.

Sofia Vergara, JLO, Paris Hilton, Naomi Campbell and

Lady Gaga have worked Michael’s splendid gowns on

the red carpet.

Cinco’s fresh juxtaposed elements, lines and

monochromatic drama blended beautifully with the

touches of 40’s Hollywood glam and elegance. “The

subtext of delicate and elaborate details, simplicity and

rich textures, embody refinement through black, nude

and blush palettes this season” said Cinco. His deeply

majestic take on glamour was evident in his edgy

pieces; one instantly wondered where the two-act

vision originated. “The Impalpable Dream of Russia:

It all started last year when I dreamt of promoting my

brand in Russia where I had very positive feedback. I

was inspired to create a collection for the blue-blooded

beauties! The glamour of Russian dolls and opulence

of the Czarinas just stirs something in my imagination

and creativity that I can only explain through mycraft. My fashion.” Pale nude garments featuring

fine embroidery silhouettes, Swarovski elements and

refined pearl beading, pranced down the runway a

la Russe-mode. Following the first act’s purity, the

heavily embroidered Russian Czarinas in over-the-top

black gowns embellished their looks with magnificent

crowns. The showstopper was a closing brocade-look

reinventing Swan Lake.

Michael believed it is a fit and flattering silhouette

that will make a quality article of clothing. In terms of

Dubai’s trends however he confessed “Dubai should

kill overdressed individuals with the wrong choice of

accessories.” We don’t have it all wrong…one trend we

should definitely keep monsieur Cinco? “Keep it classyand vibrant.”

Dubai-based Pakistani designer Amira Haroon Sheikh

unveiled her first women’s ready-to-wear label in

2009, and is now retailing across the UAE, Riyadh,

Beirut and London (in Harrods). Amira spent quite

some time in Paris where she found the direction that

ultimately inspired her love for fine arts and fashion

design.

It all started with a summer visit to London where

she became a captive of flea markets and vintage

allure, Amira’s designs tell fictitious stories with simple

and sharp cuts that honor femininity. Lines flowwith liquescent harmony and an idyllic air of Alice in

Wonderland. Fierce femininity and fantasy blend in

such a way that she can still remain true to her culture.

Luxe fabrics in black, nude, porcelain-blue, and vintage

beaded tulle are matched with hand-embellishments

that use the region’s ancestral craftsmanship. “My

collection reflects my signature style,” she said. “It’s

simple cuts, always with mysterious detail either on

the shoulder or the back. It could be one element of

contrast in the hemline or unlimited lace accented with

luxe fabrics like brocade and velvet. My embellishments

draw inspiration from ancient symbolism, henna

motifs, and vintage carpets.”

Amira’s work is a mirror image of her own personal

fashion taste but has still managed to refine her

ability to also design for a more playful and carefree

personality than her own. “I find it hard to wear very

feminine lace dresses - my mood never warrants

ease of carrying them” she confessed. With such

style-savvy instincts we couldn’t help but ask the

trendsetting designer regarding her thoughts on

Dubai’s fashion scene – “Dubai’s fashion is more

eclectic and an amalgamation of styles” she explained.

“These people are ethnically very diverse, have lived

in many other developed cities, worked with different

cultures already and have successfully mastered their

signature styles.” With the fashion candy shop picking

up its growth pace, at times one can’t help but feel

overwhelmed when it comes to choices. Amira has

some tips we might want to keep as a basic compass;

she believes “we need to stop thinking that more is

better, and start believing that less is definitely more.

We have to adopt conscious fashion, which also means

buying less, investing in more classic pieces and not

having to throw away a whole wardrobe every few

months!”

“Move the fashion scene forward and up the game!”

Originally Lebanese but brought up in Saudi Arabia,

Dina JSR attended both American and French schools.

At 17 years of age she moved to London, where she

discovered her fascination for the city’s architecture

and design. Her Jewelry Design studies from Central

Saint Martins coupled with a diploma in diamonds and

semi-precious gems from the Gemology Institute of

America (GIA), both started JSR’s design career. Once

she returned to Lebanon, the beautifully glamorous

Lebanese soirées tickled her skills and it was during

her internship with Rabih Kayroyz that she began her

fashion design story.

Zaha Hadid’s Dorobanti Tower in Bucarest inspired

Dina’s geometric and clear-cut collection. The tower’s

laser-cuts and interweaving created repetition that was

evident in her line. “Playing with subtle transparency

layers, light laces and evanescent tulle appear amid

precise strips. It plays alongside the sheathed with

black leather or amethyst-colored crêpe Georgett.”

The splendid feminine silhouettes in her cocktail and

evening dresses were slim-cut, gentle and elegant.

A playful take on fabric mixing combined with the

haute-living aura of her pieces are this city’s ninth

fashion cloud. JSR’s clothing designs were what we

came to see, but the hints of chic jewelry statements

were evident on that runway.

Amira has certainly made it clear that classic elegance

is not optional but a lady’s fashion duty. “I feel that one

should keep anything that falls into classic elegance”

she explained. “The one thing I greatly dislike is

Leopard prints. I realize that many may disagree with

me but that’s one trend you’ll never see in any of my

collections.”

JSR’s talents took over this season’s runways and this

talented designer showed just as much enthusiasm

for Dubai as the city did for her promising creations.

“Fashion Forward was a great opportunity for me to

have my first fashion show in Dubai and the region. It’s

a great platform with enormous potential” expressedAmira.

“Fashion is art, fashion is lifestyle, fashion is beauty,

fashion is business - and fashion is limitless” Furne One.

In 2002, the Philippine designer opened his boutique’s

doors to Dubai’s elite clientele with the moniker Amato

(meaning “beloved”). The name has since grown

internationally and now stands as a world-renowned

favorite with clients such as Heidi Klum, Katy Perry,Shakira, Nicole Scherzinger and Amber Rose. Being

a regular on the leading runways only brought more

excitement to his participation in Fashion Forward, and

the show he delivered did not disappoint.

Amato’s working title for the season is “Circus of Good

and Evil”, a collection that transcends the norm with

a crop of dresses inspired by the movie “Joan of Arc

- The Messenger”. “This season is mostly in black

and white shades” he explained. “There is a lot of play

with fabrication, texturizing, monotone and mixtures

of fabrics.” Evoking Joan of Arc’s religious paradoxes,

Furne One’s army of models marched a dramatic

line in two clashing brigades: black (evil) and white

(good). First came the dark dress-to-kill styles, builton shocking mixtures of leather and lace with armor,

knives, nails, whips and chains. Not gothic enough?

Thorn-enhanced headwear and horns didn’t escape

Amato’s detailing. Then came an angelic legion of

models in well-textured whites and pale nudes merged

with opulent gold and copper. The jaw-dropping finale

was Amato’s pièce de résistance: a white glacé 15th

century royalty meets swan lake princess. It was cold,

ethereal, and stunning. The show closed with the

thought-provoking question: “Who are you to think

you know the difference between good and evil?”.

Director Baz Luhrmann’s film, The Great

Emirates and with it The Great Gatsby

Collection by Tiffany & Co., inspired by

the film and created in collaboration with Oscar®-

winning costume designer Catherine Martin.

“It gives us great pleasure to showcase the Tiffany

Jazz Age Collections inspired by The Great Gatsby

and to celebrate their brilliance with our customers

in the Middle East,” said Mr. Laurent Cathala, TiffanyVice President.

The spectacular jewelry is based on designs from

the Tiffany Archives and worn by the film’s all-star

cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan,

who appear as Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. “The

jewelry symbolizes the story’s themes of wealth

and privilege, and we approached its design with

the utmost style and luxury in mind,” said Jon King,

executive vice president of Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany’s dazzling creations illuminate the characters’

rarefied world of New York penthouses and Long

Island estates. Ms. Mulligan’s Tiffany wardrobe

includes tassel necklaces and jewels with lustrousconch pearls. At evening soirées her blond bob is

circled with the Savoy, a headdress of diamonds and

cultured pearls, (shown below) and her gestures are

accented by a hand ornament in a daisy motif and

diamond rings with the Tiffany® Setting. The daisy is

also featured in earrings of Tiffany Yellow Diamonds

and a long-stemmed brooch.

Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Jordan Baker, wears

chandelier earrings of rose-cut diamonds, bracelets

of diamonds and seed pearls and Art Deco-inspired

rings of sapphires and diamonds in platinum. At posh

parties her elegant ensembles are accented with fluid

diamond necklaces and earrings of cushion-cut black

onyx or emerald-cut aquamarines.

Mr. DiCaprio’s custom Brooks Brothers shirts are

finished with oval cuff links of black or green enamel

on 18 karat gold. Essentials such as a slender card

case and flask in sterling silver fit smoothly in the

pockets of his tailored linen suits and tuxedo.

The skin exfoliating and toning Buffy (115aed for 200g) will help

you get the perfect beach bum. A favorite of Kylie Minogue,

it’s packed with ground rice, aduki beans and almonds to gently

scrub away any dry skin and cellulite, helping to firm up limbs.

Helen Ambrosen, Lush Product Creator says: “One of the most

important things to do is to keep your skin gently stimulated and

maintain a healthy circulation. By doing this you’ll encourage

the elimination of toxins, ensure a healthy turnover of cells andstimulate muscle tone”.

A good moisturiser is essential for your summer beauty routine,

in order to combat dry skin. When skin is tanned it instinctively

wants to dry out and shed the dead skin – as tanned skin

is fundamentally a response to sun damage. So choose

moisturisers that are highly emollient, to lock-in moisture and

help prevent peeling. Dream Cream (125aed for 240g) is a Lush

best seller and the ultimate soothing moisturiser, using olive oilas a rich emollient that seriously softens the skin. According to

Helen “There is evidence that keeping the skin softened helps

maintain its barrier function helping to prevent moisture-loss”.

This, in turn, also helps to maintain a suntan!

And for added shimmer, use Black Stockings skin tint (75aed for

30g) for an instant holiday glow. A blend of brown and bronze

pigments in a cocoa and shea butter bar, that when swept over

the arms and legs will soften and moisturise whilst the pigments

cover lightly to give an even color, tone and glow.

Lemony Flutter cuticle butter (70aed for 50g) is also perfect

for rubbing into hard skin on heels and toes. Intensely lemon-

scented, lemon oil is very softening and used to treat corns and

calluses. Simply slather on dry, hard skin on the feet, put socks

on and leave overnight. Feet will be softened in the morning.

Also, as the humidity rises, never step out without Emotional

Brilliance Translucent powder (70aed). It’s guaranteed to banish

shine and keeps you skin powder fresh!

To give hair that sexy, tousled summer look, use Lush’s NEW

Seaspray hair mist (95aed for 100g). A salty spritz to add body,

volume and hold, while leaving hair scented with orange flower,

grapefruit and neroli. Apply before blow-drying or apply to dry

hair and work through for beach waves.

And don’t forget your feet. After giving them a good scrub with

something like Stepping Stone (55aed for 60g) or Ocean Salt

(140aed for 250g), dry them and slather on the moisturiser.

This has numerous benefits, least leaving them soft and

smooth. Incorporating massage for your feet can actually help

to improve circulation, which can reduce the risk of varicose

veins.

And for keeping hair soft and nourished against the drying

effects of the sun, use NEW Blousey shampoo (125aed for

240g). A gentle shampoo for dry hair (especially treated, dyed

or coloured) that contains emollient bananas to condition,

soften and lock in moisture. It also contains spices like pimento

and anise to stimulate the scalp and hair growth and cocoa and

cupuacu butter (from Brazil) to moisturise and add shine.

Use a rich cream like Fairtrade Foundation accredited Fair

Trade Foot Lotion (100aed for 225g pot), it has lashings of

softening cocoa butter, which Lush buys from a certified Fair

Trade supplier. There are also peppermint and spearmint

essential oils to not only stimulate circulation, but also cool the

feet, relieving aches and pains. They also have antibacterial/

antifungal properties and are deodorising.

For a Breath of Fresh Air (80aed for 225gr), Lush has an amazing

toner that does just that, literally, stock in the fridge and spray

on your fresh for a refreshing pick me up.

I was asked to experience the Detox Diet and review my experience. At first, the thought got me fired up, but that was only

until the reality hit me: I’d be juicing it up for 5 full days. Yes, that’s right! Five days of juice, juice, juice! As the date of the plan

approached, any “DETOX” thoughts became synonymous with torture. In a dramatic fashion (déjà vu Jenna in MTV’s Akward)

I pictured myself trapped behind kale-smoothie bars staring at heavenly food from my prison. I didn’t let the temptation get to

me…this was my Everest.

My Detox DiaryFive days of Detox-Delight – cleansed body, clearer

skin and the cherry on top was my flat tummy!

What is Detox?DETOX – or detoxification – is the removal of toxic substances

from your body. It is the process of activating the body’s natural

powers for purification. The cleansing route will boost the

vivacity and balance of the body, supporting a longer lifespan

and overall well being.

Day 1 – 8:00 am and there’s already a uniformed gentleman

delivering my fresh diet nestled in an iced Styrofoam box. Thebeautifully typed well-being diet plan couldn’t be missed! The

colorful juices, one hot-red soup, and a “good luck” card from

Nicole and Claudia, all gave me a surprisingly energetic kick

to start. Day one was no walk in the park ladies. The biggest

challenge was hands down having beetroot soup for dinner…

ONLY beetroot soup….ONLY!!! But anyhow, I managed.

Day 2 – the crankiest day ever; I woke up with a heavy head

and I was starving. Ah…Juices…AGAIN? REALLY? I had my

breakfast juice and followed the plan. The juices were flavorful

and strangely satisfying. Lemonade, Pink and Orange were

by far my favorites! For some strange reason I had a terrible

headache and was about to cry, scream and give up. Top it all

off with incontrollable cravings and you’ll understand why my

numerous trips to the kitchen became a workout! I must havegone one hundred times to grab anything to chew on, but after

repeating to myself “2 are down – 3 more to go” I controlled

my demons.

Day 3 & 4– It surprised me how subtly my cravings redirected

themselves towards, believe it or not, JUICE! I was longing for

my freshness fix. I didn’t feel like eating, smoking or having

caffeine but still I was wondering, are there other changes I’m

maybe not noticing? My hubby said: “You look happier and

fresh.”

Day 5 – Glow, shine and mesmerize. The final day was

impressive and new for me. I felt light, positive and fresh. My

skin was brighter and with less breakouts. My detox experience

taught me that that my eating habits play a vital role in my

emotional state. Whenever I ate junk or processed food, I felt

downright low. Sometimes even frustrated or irritated. While

doing my Detox, I felt BETTER after my meals with an overall

happier and more positive approach to my daily life. The flat

tummy alone was enough to make my journey worth my time,

but everything else was a bonus.

“I simply loved the experience. It has been the most

refreshing, nurturing and self-indulgent week for

me. I feel fresh, contented and fit. Detox Delight

gave me the spirit of liveliness and relished my soul.

Thank you Nicole and Claudia for all your lovely

messages and support throughout my detox days

and I would like to thank my husband as well, forbaring with my grouchiest mood swings and being

patient with me. I recommend this to everyone

because you and your health are worth it.”

– Sidra Surmed

My freshness was delivered

to my doorstep.

The Elite’s FitnessChoice

Dubai’s most expensive PT and fitness philosopher, AmirSiddiqui, talks tips, harsh truths and smart training.

Best-Quality Trainer, Best-Quality Results

Get in the game. Every single person I know who’s putting themselves through tough fitness journeys and regimented eating

habits is aiming towards one common goal: self-improvement. Some may want a rock-hard six-pack while others may want to

improve agility and speed. Your blueprint’s creator however is essentially what will make that amazing effort worth your while

or a total waste. If you are serious about your health and fitness and happen to live in Dubai, you’re in luck.

Known for his effective techniques, Dubai’s Amir Siddiqui is no typical PT. His knowledge expands far beyond ‘do some cardio,

weight training and eat low carb’ and his clientele at Symmetry Gym will tell you no different. Regionally known as Dubai’s

most expensive PT, you can’t put a price on Amir’s expertise. After 15 years of devouring data and mentoring the industry’s

crème de la crème, he’s created the most sophisticated and effective fitness solution Dubai has seen. You think you know

your fitness? Think again. Speak to the man for 5 minutes and you’ll quickly realize why after one coffee cup at MORE, I began

calling him the “Fitness Larousse.” Here’s what he had to say.

   B   y  :   C  r   i  s   t   i  n  a

   M  a  a  g

Page 89: Evening z 062013

Who inspires you?

Two men: world-renowned fitness coach Scott Abel and my

intellectual motivation would have to be Howard Bloom.

What would you like to be known for?

Looking at fitness science with the eye of an artist.

What’s the biggest misconception people have

about you?

That I’m very arrogant! People misconstrue confidence with

arrogance and exchange them very easily. Of course there are

things I’m going to know better than the next person, but that’s

simply because I’m a professional and expert in my field. Its

domain expertise.

What are your thoughts on the Paleo lifestyle?

It’s good guesswork I suppose, but it’s just guesswork. There is no

actual evidence supporting it, yet the Paleo lifestyle is presented

and promoted as evidence-based. The big issue is that the Paleo

lifestyle is suggesting that human beings have not evolved in the

last 10,000 years. And that’s false. We are more bacteria than weare human; they evolve at a much faster rate, and we have to

consider that bacteria in our gut do almost or more than half of

our food digestion for us. This means of course our gut biome also

evolves. We are not the same human beings that we were 10,000

years ago, psychologically or physically.

What do you think is the biggest challenge for the

UAE’s fitness? What gets between people and their

physical health?

When it comes to expats the number one reason people eat too

much is plain and simple: boredom. The expats that come here

have a more luxurious lifestyle, they have to do less work, they

have more free time, and they are bored out of their minds. The

number one way to overcome ANY addiction (and food addiction

is being taken more seriously now) is to not allow yourself to have

a moment of boredom. It’s the same approach with dieting. You

can diet all day, because you’re busy. Then you get home and all

hell breaks loose because you’re bored and stressed. The cycle

repeats itself on a large scale over the week. You’re better during

weekdays, because you’re busy. The flood gates scream open

during the weekend – once again, because your mind is stressed

out and needs to relax. And food DOES do well in combating

stress. Except that the accumulation of fat then becomes its own

stress. The cycle becomes recursive.

If you could choose the 3 key habits people should

keep in mind when fat burn and muscle gain are the

goals, what would they be?

My rules are the 4 R’s:

Regimentation, repetition and ritualization = Results

Devise exact training times. Exact eating times and exact working

and sleeping times – at least 5 days per week and you will see

fantastic results IF your coach has put together the right training

and diet plan for you. Consistency of application is a key Universal

principle for change.

Do you believe one can eat everything but in

moderation, exercise, and get results?

Of course! Every single one of my clients does that.

Have you ever been overweight?

Yes, but functionally. When I was doing my strongman training

I was weighing in at 390 pounds; an active and fit 390 pounds.

Your body needs that extra fat in order to push things that are as

heavy as entire airplanes! So in essence, if anyone is truly qualified

to give fat-loss advice in Dubai, it should be me. Im probably the

only trainer that has shed over 120 pounds of fat!

How do you motivate people to get and stay fit?

I’m not a motivator. Motivation has to come from within…I just

provide the map. Motivation absolutely has to be INTERNALLY

generated. Externally motivated people are short-term people.

Do you have a favorite exercise?

It’s the squat! Because firstly, I’m good at it - we kind of tend to

like the exercises we are good at. Secondly, they burn a lot of

calories and they are very effective if used correctly.

What’s your favorite cheat food?

Strawberry Cheesecake! I eat an entire cake every Friday morning.

Belle Au Naturel!Makeup that men like

Every year, women all over the world

collectively spend billions of dollars on

cosmetics. Yet, if you were to ask men what

kind of makeup they like on a woman, almost

all of them would say they like their women

au naturel! Some men would even say that

makeup puts them off. This is of course

because men are clueless about cosmetics

and do not know the amount of effort a

no-makeup makeup look takes. Fortunately,

we bring you a guide to the natural yet sexy

makeup your man will love that is as easy

as 1,2,3..

For a flawless face

1. Instead of layering your face with

foundation, opt for a more natural BB cream

finish. It will cover spots and blemishes while

simultaneously evening out your skin tone in

a natural way.

2. Use a light concealer only on spots and

blemishes instead of layering it on.

3. To add some color to your face, use a

cream blush that matches the inside of your

bottom lip I this color will give your face anatural flush. A cream blush is not only long

lasting, but it melts into your skin avoiding

the chalky made-up look of a powder blush

For defined eyes

1. To make your eyes pop while still looking

natural, focus on those lashes! Using an

eyelash curler, curl your lashes to make your

eyes look more open and awake.

2. After curling your lashes, go to town with

your mascara! Apply at least two coats and

to avoid clumping, apply the second coat

while the first is still damp.

3. If you have light skin, smudge dark browneyeliner on your upper lash line to emphasize

it. Use black eyeliner if you have dark skin.

Additionally, you can contour the crease of

your eyelids with a matte dark brown eye

shadow for that extra oomph.

For kissable lips

 1. To create the illusion of soft, kissable lips

start by moisturizing them with a lip balm.

2. Next, use a lipstick shade that matches

the color of your lips and press it onto your

lips to create a more natural stain like finish.

3. Finish with clear lip gloss!

Mars and Venus…andSocial Media

Why men use social media and how their usagediffers from women

It is said that men are from Mars and women

are from Venus, but does this saying hold

true in the common zone of social media?

You’d be surprised to find that even though

men and women both use Facebook, Twitter

and various other social media, the way men

and women use it proves that both the genders

are definitely not from the same planet. While

men prefer Youtube, LinkedIn and Google+,

women prefer Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

Men are also more likely to use social media

when intoxicated or using the lavatory as

opposed to women who are most likely to use

social media when they are watching TV or

travelling. Here are a few reasons why men

use social media:

1. Sports updates:Many women may find watching sports

completely useless. However, men are

obsessed with watching game after game of

the sports they enjoy. And when they can’t

catch the game live or on TV, they turn to social

media for real time updates that are available

on Facebook, Twitter and various blogs! And

if their favorite player scores a goal – they

use social media to brag about it! YES! MESSI

SCORED ANOTHER GOAL! Okay, moving on…

2. Gaming: No, we are not talking about Farmville,

Farm Town, Happy Farm or any other virtual

gardening game. Men are typical men on social

media too – for them it’s always about wars,

cars and sports. Popular social media games

played by men include: Mafia Wars, World

of Warcraft and FIFA 13 on the PlayStation 3

online network. Social gaming gives men (and

women) a chance to compete with their friends

virtually no matter how far apart they are in

geographic distance.

3. Technology recommendations: While both men and women use social media

for technology recommendations and reviews, the way they do so differs. Women turn to

many sources – blogs (that they may or may

not know), expert reviews, peer reviews,

customer reviews on the product page and so

on whereas men solely rely on expert sites for

instance CNet and Amazon. Men tend to not be

interested in reading blogs of people they do

not know or are not considered experts.

4.Connecting with friends:Most men use social media as a way to connect

with friends who live far away from them or

whom they’ve lost touch with. If there is a way

to contact their friends without using social

media – men would prefer that. In other words,

social media, for many men, is the last resort

to communicate and connect with friends.

5.Entertainment: Of the 280 million active user base on YouTube,

54% are male. 25% of men watch a YouTube

video daily compared to 17% of women and

on average men spend an hour per week on

YouTube compared to women who spend 35

minutes per week.

Lange & Söhne debuts new masterpieces in

the Middle East at its boutiques in Avenue at

Etihad Towers, Abu Dhabi and The Dubai Mall.

Launched during the Salon International de la

Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in the beginning of the year, the

been on a tour across the brand’s 11 global boutiques.

To mark the occasion of the regional premiere, CEO of

Wilhem Schmind A. Lange & Söhne hosted a gathering in

May at The Dubai Mall boutique.

“It is a great pleasure to visit the Middle East again and

to witness the debut of the 2013 novelties. The region is

a prominent luxury hub and with the increasing number

This year’s novelties continue to set the standards in the realm

of precision watchmaking. The 1815 Rattrap ante Perpetual

Calendar melds the technical fascination of a rattrap ante

chronograph with the enduring precision of a perpetual calendar;

the perfect four-hand 1815 Up/Down reflects the A. Lange &

Söhne style in its purest form; the semi-transparent dial of the

Grand Lange 1 Lumen exposes the ingenious mechanism of

Lange’s first luminescent outsize date display; the new Grand

Lange 1 is elegant and creative with its black solid-silver dial and

luminous hands and appliques; the Saxonia Annual Calendar

has become a reference in the calendar watch category and is

now available in platinum, and the diamond-studded Saxonia

Automatic coalesces the genius of watchmakers with the

virtuosity of gem setters.

Lange & Söhne watches are celebrated in the world for definingbenchmarks, with an unmatched level of craftsmanship,

technical ingenuity and innovation that often enters unchartered

territory. The new collection undeniably underlines the vision

established by its founding father: to craft the world’s finest

timepieces.

The SAXONIA THIN received the second prize in the category

“watches priced up to 25,000 Euro”. The two awards were

accepted by Lange CEO Wilhelm Schmid at a gala evening

event in Munich’s BMW museum on 14th March 2013.To date,

timepieces of A. Lange & Söhne have been awarded 14 times

with a first prize and made it 23 times into the top three in this

competition.

The SaffronExtravagance

What makes Saffron the world’s mostexpensive spice?

As unexpected as it is for a spice to be one

of the most expensive foods in the world,

it is even more expected that it is more

expensive than gold. Saffron, the world’s

most expensive spice and one of the world’s most

expensive foods can range from anywhere between

$1,600 to $5,000 per pound of saffron. So, what

makes this exotic reddish-yellow spice so expensive?

It is not the wonderful taste it lends to food, but its

cultivation process that makes saffron so expensive.

Saffron is extracted from the Saffron Crocus plant

and each of these plants contains only three stigmas/

strands of saffron. With only three stigmas per plant, it

takes a lot of plants to extract a pound of saffron. At 3

stigmas per plant, it takes 75,000 plants to cultivate the

one pound of saffron that typically contains 225,000

stigmas. Sounds like hard work!

Iran produces and exports 90% of the world’s Saffron.

Other producers include Spain (the La Mancha region in

particular), Turkey, Greece and Morocco. Even though

India is known as the land of spices, it imports large

quantities of saffron not for cooking purposes, but to

dye the Buddhist robes the official yellow color.

What We Use It ForSaffron is used to prepare a myriad of delicacies

around the world including the French bouillabaisse,

Spanish paellas and the Indian biryani. It brings out the

taste in dishes that contain eggs, mushrooms, seafood,

spinach and potatoes. It is also an exotic ingredient in

Italian liqueur Strega Herbal and grape based French

spirit Fernet Branca – which is also an excellent cure

for a hangover.

Medicinally, Saffron is known to ease digestion and

aid stomach aches. Additionally, it is also used to cure

fever and flu and regulate menstruation in women.Due to the high antioxidants present in Saffron, it is an

excellent anti-aging spice.

To use saffron in a dish you can either crush the saffron

threads before soaking them or simply soak them in

water/broth to infuse the flavoring and coloring into

the dish. The threads can also be toasted and then

crushed to obtain a powder form to add to a dish. For

coloring purposes, turmeric can be used as a cheaper

substitute as they both produce a rich golden color.

However, the taste of saffron cannot be substituted!

The Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre hosted a

performance by the Contemporary Dance Dubai, a project

that arose out of pure passion to dance in its many beautiful

forms. Here’s what Krista Degaetano, its innovative founder,

passionate teacher and choreographer has to say about her DUCTAC

performance.

- Give us a brief idea about what your performance was

all about; theme, the dance techniques, choreographer

and choreography, music, etc.

The performance is choreographed by Krista Degaetano. It consists

of 14 pieces which demonstrate various Contemporary Dance

techniques such as Cunningham, Limon, Graham, Contact, and also

Contemporary Dubstep and Contemporary Ballet techniques. A good

combination of music was chosen for the pieces as well, ranges from

lyrical pop songs to Classical, Electrical, and Dubstep.

With a combination of both professional and student dancers, the

performance treats the audience with a variety of pieces demonstrating

the beautiful world of Contemporary Dance that has been inspiringand part of so many dance lovers lives. It demonstrates various levels

taught by CDD and show the audience that anyone can dance with

some discipline and more importantly with passion.

- What motivated you to get involved with contemporary

dance as opposed to the more traditional dance forms?

I have been dancing since the tender age of three and in my thirty

years of dance experience, I have studied almost every technique

under the sun. I fell in love with Contemporary in Cambridge when

I was studying Musical Theatre professionally. I loved singing and

dancing to the Musical Theatre masterpieces but that did not seem

to satisfy my desire to express myself as a choreographer and artist

in representing all the aspects of life. Life is complex as much as it

is beautiful and Contemporary dance through its various techniquesallows you to express anything. I am a passionate technical dancer

in that I love dance technique, clear lines, making the body do dance

moves that take a lot of technical skill. As much as ballet enables you

to do this, there are so many limitations. Contemporary challenges

levels and directions in dance, using the body in ways you can’t

imagine. It is exciting and there is a lot of hard physical work that

pushes boundaries. I get bored and demotivated if I’m not able to

push myself further and further each day and make new discoveries

in the my body as a dancer. Contemporary allows you to do that.

- How much of a scope do you think contemporary dance

has in Dubai?

Contemporary dance has a huge scope and potential in Dubai. I have

seen this with my own eyes through my company, CDD. I started

with 2 students that soon developed to over a hundred passionate

participating members in a short time. With a city like Dubai that is

so business orientated, people need something to balance them with

regards to expressing their successes or frustrations. I believe there is

an element of art or expression beyond just business in most people.

And Contemporary dance enables and individual to let go and dance

their heart out to anything they want to express after their hectic days

looking at numbers or business transactions. Contemporary dance is

very physically and physiologically challenging. It not only provides

you with a fit body but also a relaxed mind as you can let go and

channel any energy into dance in this way.

Another way of looking at it is I suppose comparing it to 2 major

business oriented cities in the world, London and New York.

Surprisingly, contemporary dance is most successful in these 2 cites

hosting some of the most influential choreographers and dancers to

date. These cites may have thrived in this area due to the population’s

need for expression, who knows. All I can say right now is that

Contemporary dance has magically transformed people’s lives and Iknow this will only increase in Dubai over the years. I am very proud

to have pioneered this.

- Do you plan to conduct similar events in the near future

in Dubai?

CDD first ever student /professional showcase was just a little taster.

CDD has very big plans with not only bringing more productions of this

kind, but also collaborating with some incredible artists worldwide to

bring more and more inspiring work to the region.

CDD is already in the process of setting up and epic production

based on human trafficking with some of London’s highly acclaimed

choreographers and artists. CDD has got approval and patronage form

Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak for this event.

- Did you have a base in any other form of dance before

getting into contemporary dance?

Yes, I did. Mostly ballet which gave me the technical basis as a dancer

to then develop into any other style I chose. In my many years of

training, I have known some of the best technical dancers from any

style that have had ballet as a base to be the best dancers.

- What message do you want to convey through your

performance and to young aspiring dancers?

It does not just take a talented dancer to express themselves, but

any individual who has some passion for dance . My classes andperformance have proved to an audience that anyone can express

themselves through dance if they would love to. My beginner

and foundation classes have prepared dancers not only for the

performance, but also for life expression and now they are hooked.

On the other hand, my company attracts very serious and aspiring

dancers who want to be professionals. As an audience on the other

hand, CDD has wanted to nurture and fill people‘s minds and heart

with a message through dance. This showcase has represented many

messages and the audience has felt this by watching. This is CDD’s

ultimate achievement.

Known all over the UAE as a pioneer of introducing an abundance of

opportunities for professional dancers and students, Contemporary

Dance Dubai has established itself successfully in the UAE and Middle

East region. It offers classes from foundational to professional levelsand simultaneously offers performance opportunities, private tuitions

and intensive workshops in a variety of dancing styles and techniques.

So get your dancing shoes out and immerse yourself in the beauty of

contemporary dance.

THE BRANDO-STYLELEGACY

This month’s issue we bring you the ever iconic, stylish and yesteryear

Hollywood’s first rebel actor, Marlon Brando.   B   y  :   M   a   r   i   a   M   a   t   h   e   w

Marlon Brando. The very name brings back the all

too famous Godfather get up of the actor. He was

an icon in every sense of the word. He had it all;

the talent, the looks, the attitude, the eccentricity

which some may even dub as possessing a little too much

attitude. Nevertheless, he was always looked at with the

greatest respect and awe. According to American Film Institute,

“The art of screen acting has two chapters – “Before Brando”

and “After Brando”. Though Stanislavski created “method

acting”, it was Brando who showed the world its power.”

Discovered by critics in 1944 for his Broadway play Remember

Mama, Brando was titled the most promising actor of the time.

Something about the intensity of his looks and the style with

which he carried himself simply added to his extreme talent. With Trail Blazer in 1953, he carved an unrivaled niche for

himself in Hollywood and in every movie goer’s heart. Soon

every teenager wanted to be like him; his style, his brooding

mannerisms, his way of talking too. They wanted it all.

His clothes never ever wore him. Brando was the one of the

few male stars who could pull off anything he wore both on

and off the set; not only could he pull it off with élan but he

carried it off in his own signature style, making just about any

piece of clothing his own. His fashion sense was simple; by

using the essential pieces of clothing and being recognized for

the same he set himself apart as a real fashion icon.

He symbolized rock and roll even before rock and roll realized

it. His rebellious attitude although frowned upon at the timestill kept the audience enthralled. This even extended to his

choice of clothes; he was one of those rare actors who never

hesitated in wearing what he felt like wearing wherever he

felt like wearing it. He created quite a buzz when he stepped

out for one of his movie premiers in a pair of jeans and a

shirt. That never disturbed his mass appeal to the audience. If

anything else they only loved him more when he popularized

the motorbike look in the movie The Wild One; the side

burns, the perfect shiny biker’s jacket, the tilted jacket, the

bad boy attitude; everything screamed perfection. Such was

the popularity of the look that Elvis Presley modeled his look

in Jailhouse Rock after it.

Brando is one of those few actors like Marilyn Monroe whose

fashion sense and style quotients have been carried forwardlong after they’ve gone on. While their initiators have moved

on to the afterlife, their sense of style and fashion still lives

on among us.

Turkish artist Arzu Akgün was born in 1970 with an exceptional

mind. She visualized the world in a very different manner.

Arzu emphasized basic and ordinary things which are

frequently neglected but still essential in our daily routines.

She saw them in a distinctive style and showcased those images

in the shape of 3 dimensional paintings on woodblocks. With a

unique sense of artistic flavor and imagination, she evokes the bond

between the desires of aesthetically shaped women’s silhouettes with

oneself. With a personalized re-interpreting the traditional woodblock

printing technique, she developed an inimitable approach. In her

paintings, Arzu illustrates a person’s imagination, subjectivity and

their individuality. Her paintings unveil the story of atrocious feelings,

voracity and tragedy, which harmonizes with the sad and romantic

atmosphere.

Arzu said:“Basic functions of our daily lives are turned into consumption products.

My exhibitions’ creative process arises from those consumer goods.

I want to emphasize the connection that I built with the objects

and individuals by using the existing elements and forms (such as

showcases, shopping centers, etc.). I carry the cosmetic products and

aesthetic woman figures as passion objects into my painting. Thus,

utilize the rich visual layer of these goods. My intention is not to re-

portray an existing object but to change them or use them for an

original purpose.”

Exceptional InsightArzu Akgun evokes a liaison with the depth of every day life.

appearance, etc. The bond between humans and

cosmetics is not a modern-day development but

rather a deep-rooted legacy. Makeup has even

been discovered in graves of sleeping mummies

and all these years, women throughout different

civilizations have been pampering themselves

with similar techniques as these artsy corpses.

With our ancestors’ makeup creations, today the

fashion and beauty industries are minting millions

of dollars every year. This proves that mummies

or not, beauty is an integral part of our society

and culture .The obsession for looking young and

beautiful is compelling us to go beyond our limits

and seek new spice in the old.

Dazzling Egyptian Beauty:Historians believed that the idea of beauty

sprouted from ancient Egyptian culture. Even

thousands of years back fragrant soaps, creams,

powders and scented oils were used to protect

their bodies from infections and harsh sunlight. The Queens of Nile “Nefertiti and Cleopatra”

tinted their eyes with Kohl, crimson red lips with

animal blood, and topped it all off with henna

dyes and hair polishing.

Egyptian Hollywood. Egypt may be far from

Hollywood beauties like Jessica Alba, Jennifer

Lopez and Sofia Vergara that didn’t stop these

beauties from making an Egypt-inspired makeup

statement on the 2013 Goldens Globes’ red

carpet. They spiced up the evening with their

smoky eyes, vibrant red lipstick and decked up

with loose wavy vintage hair dos.

Timeless Eastern Beauty:India back in the day. The world of beauty

is incomplete without mentioning the sub-

continent’s Ayurveda beauty secrets. These

ancient treatments provided holistic solutions

to cure, revitalize and rejuvenate the mind and

body. Beauty to them was not just skin deep

but a physical reflection of the soul. Natural

ingredients were vital; for instance, Henna, Amla

and Sikakia were used for hair’s nourishment.

Sandalwood , a stable in Indian beauty, was

used as a medicinal cream for soft, supple and

radiant skin.

India Now. Stunning Indian beauties like

Aishwarya Rai, Vidya Balan , Freida Pinto andSonam Kapoor slayed the Cannes Film Festival

red carpet this year by sporting looks inspired by

Bollywood’s different eras.

Eternal Chinese Beauty:Over the years, the Chinese have developed

unique feminine approaches to beauty. Their

women were famous for perfect porcelain

complexions, dark eyes and bold lips. To get

a white pasty look they applied rice or pearl

powder or even – brace yourselves – a white

paste prepared from bird’s feces! For those hot

red bold lips they applied lip balms made from

plant juices, animal blood or minerals whereas

eggs, beeswax and gelatin were used as nailpaint. And how did they get those rosy cheeks?

Saffron did the trick!

Bonjour China! Chinese Actress and fashion icon

Fan Binbing wore a bold punch red lipstick with

her flawless white complexion at the Cannes

2013 Film Festival. Her typically chinese makeup

complimented her traditional Chinese gown in

perfect harmony.

Pretty Greek:Greek history is not only about events, wars

and warriors; there is lot more to it. They very

glamorous Greek people were made beauty

quite the ritual. Greek beauty was all about pale

complexion, golden locks and natural makeup.

Their women wore minimal amounts of makeup

to look naturally alluring. Their lipsticks were

prepared from olive oil and beeswax or ironoxide and ochre clays. Ancient Greeks had week

knees for joined eyebrows, so decking their eyes

with dark eye shades and eye-liners was very in.

Greece, Greece, Greece!Annabelle Wallis carried a look of prefect Greek

Goddess at the BAFTA awards 2013. Tying her

golden locks in a plain lose bun accompanied by

her natural pale complexion, dark eyes, glossy

pink lips and rosy cheekbones. What a stunner!

1. LUXURIOUS SPA TREATMENTSWhile these spa treatments can get a lit tle tight on the time wallet,

for us busy bees it is a little hard to complain when a few minutes

into the treatment you feel like you were born without bones.

These luxurious treatments are a great way to relax after a long

day or week. It’s also an even better way to pamper yourself just

a little and enjoy some much needed quality time with you, you,

and only you deserve after a hectic day.

2. CHOCOLATE COATED DATESClassifying these tiny delicious delights as a fruit is not fooling

anyone. These chocolate-coated treats are tasty and the perfect

snack for an evening on the couch.

3. WATCHING RERUNS OF OLD TV SHOWSYou know this is true! When you can quote every dialogue

Chandler’s ever said in Friends’ or know exactly what happens

in the 12th episode of One Tree Hill’s 2nd season. A number of

channels like Star World and MBC4 show reruns of old shows;

Friends, Kyle XY, Full House, Everybody Loves Raymond, Kings of

Queens. And on a lazy Friday afternoon there’s no greater pleasure

with just a little bit of guilt clawing in some unimportant part of

your mind over simply sitting with your snacks on the couch and

laughing over mindless episodes of Kings of Queens and Two and

a Half Men.

4. DRIFTINGThis activity makes our list for the sense of pleasure it gives the

rashest of drivers and for the slight guilt that comes with knowing

the consequences of slip-ups. For all those who love to imprint

the roads of Dubai with their tire marks and get that sense of

being alive from the screech sound of their tires during drifting,

then here’s a safer option: sand drifting.

5. SPENDING HOURS ONLINE SHOPPING/ONLINE

WINDOW SHOPPINGSometimes a lot of shopping sites just appear out of the blue on

your screen. You want to believe it’s totally accidental but soon

you’re looking at dresses and shoes and some more shoes. Beforeyou know it, you’ve spent a lot of your productive time and even

a significant portion of your purse on a lot of pretty goodies.

Satisfactory? Absolutely.

6. DEVOTING AN ENTIRE FRIDAY TO BRUNCHThere’s something about Friday brunches; aside from the fact

that they steer you away from any kind of productivity, it’s just an

overall party. After the long hours of fun on a Thursday night, the

Friday Brunch is a near sacred tradition. It feels absolutely heavenly

to just sit with your family and friends at your favorite hot spot for

hours on end. Before you know it, it’s six pm and it hits you: yet

another Friday is lost to the awesomeness of the Friday brunch.

7. RACINGIt starts off innocently enough. You’re on the fast track, on Sheikh

Zayed road of course, and suddenly someone cuts you off. Not

being one to give up a good chase, you try overtaking him/herand before you know it, you’re racing across a crowded highway.

Missing ramming into another car by the breadth of a hair strand

and the speed involved only adds to your adrenaline rush; while

your brain is trying to calculate, with a touch of guilt hopefully, just

how many fines and flashes you may have accumulated. Let’s try

to keep the roads safe, shall we? Leave the racing to Schumacher

next time.
