A BEECHWOOD CONTINUING CARE PUBLICATION WINTER 2016-2017

T he Beechwood/Blocher Foundation AuxiliaryBoard’s 21st annual auction and food extravaganza was truly a memorable one!

Not only did our guests come prepared to party, theywere prepared to bid! This year’s auction raised over$130,000 and would not have been possible withoutthe generosity of families, friends, vendors and localbusinesses, as well as more than 75 volunteers.

The auction is Beechwood’s largest annualfundraiser and has raised nearly $1.75 million since itbegan. Proceeds from this event go to the Living CareFund, which helps supplement our cost of care forresidents who have exhausted their personal resourcesand allows us to keep our promise that once a residentbecomes a member of our Beechwood ContinuingCare “family,” they remain with us for as long as theyneed our care…regardless of their financial situation.

The “Evening in Paris” theme was a stunningevent. The atrium and public areas were transformedinto Paris cafes with street lights and artists at each corner.Guests sampled French inspired foods and desserts aswell as participated in the fun and entertainment, includ-ing an exciting auction filled with terrific items up forbid.

Kevin O’Connell of WGRZ-TV served as theMaster of Ceremonies and auctioneer for the evening.Music was provided by the Ron Corsaro Jazz Trio.

I can’t believe another year has passed since I reported on the “State of OurHomes!” Beechwood Continuing Care experienced a very strong year for all our communities. I would like to share with you just some of the accomplishments as wellas what we all look forward to in 2017:

Asbury Pointe Retirement CommunityLast year was a robust year for Asbury! The average apartment occupancy rate has

increased each of the last three years and was 96% in 2016. We presently have a stronglist of individuals and couples who are eager to make AsburyPointe their home as well!

Asbury maintains the beauty of its building and apartmentsthroughout each year and this past year was no exception.

All apartments are undergoing updates including custom kitchen cabinetry,granite countertops and stainless steel appliances which began early last yearand will be ongoing until complete. The Courtyard dining room was refreshed withbeautiful new wallpaper, carpet and re-upholstered chairs while a new and improvedsound system was installed in the theatre room and the Embers dining room.

As part of a master plan to connect outdoor access between the Asbury andBeechwood campuses, major enhancements to the resident / visitor walking path were started and largely completed last year. The widened, extended path with additional, adjoining seating areas is simply wonderful.Construction of the new grand foot bridge that crosses the natural wooded area between AsburyPointe and Beechwood Health Care Center will resume soon and should be finished over the next fewmonths. These efforts were funded in part through the very generous bequest from former Asbury Pointe resident,John Repetski. What a wonderful addition to the entire campus and living experience at Asbury Pointe.

Blocher Homes Assisted/Enhanced LivingThe average daily occupancy rate has increased at Blocher Homes each of the last three years as well. The

Enhanced Living program continues to be in great demand – both with our present residents and potential residents in the community. This means that Blocher Homes can accommodate the changing clinicalneeds and preferences of its residents to allow them to “age in place” in their “home” at Blocher ratherthan transferring to a skilled nursing environment. Blocher has invested significant resources to imple-ment a new electronic medical record system to facilitate staff in assessing and treating even the slight-est change in a resident’s clinical condition.

The dramatic renovations to Blocher’s interior space that started in 2015 continued last year with the transfor-mation of both the formal resident dining room and the auditorium. Blocher has been working with the same inte-

rior designer as Asbury Pointe to ensure that the high quality and welcomingdécor carries throughout both buildings. Facility staff and residents are veryexcited about the new gift shop that is currently under construction.Volunteers will continue to oversee the workings of the shop and look forwardto filling the new space with needed staple items as well as some new andexciting inventory! In addition, the residents have enjoyed the beautificationof the outdoor campus through the talented efforts of its grounds keeper andoperations manager. Spring can’t come soon enough!

Beechwood Homes & Wesley Rehabilitation Center

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS

Continuing with the theme of reinvesting in our facilities, several projects were undertaken atBeechwood last year to further enhance the resident and visitor experience. Carpeting and flooring werereplaced, kitchen cabinets were resurfaced, and wall-coverings were updated on resident households of both the Eastand West Village. Carpeting was replaced in all common area hallways of the WestVillage as well as the Commons – which is the long hallway that connects the twoVillages. The first phase of our major initiative to transition from using window air conditioning units in the West Village to a centralized air conditioning systemwas also completed. The next phase of this major capital investment project isscheduled to begin soon – weather permitting. As mentioned in our Asburysummary, work will continue on the widening and extension of thewalking pathways on the Beechwood portion of the campus. To furtherenhance the outdoor walking experience, we will create a meditation/grotto garden and family outdoorpicnic area. Benches, flowering shrubs and plants will be placed throughout the pathways as well asstrategically placed “fitness” stations!

CENSUS

Consistent with Asbury Pointe and Blocher Homes, the average daily occupancy rate has increased each of the last three years at Beechwood. Last year the average daily occupancy rate was 98%. That is a remarkablepercentage for any facility, but it is especially impressive considering the fact that there were over 600new resident admissions to Beechwood in 2016.

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

Results of the 2016 rehabilitation/short-term stay resident satisfaction surveys and the long-term care resident/family satisfaction survey were very positive with the facility meeting orexceeding state and national benchmarks for performance. In fact, improvementin customer satisfaction has been experienced over the last three years inevery key indicator – overall satisfaction, recommend to others, quality oflife, quality of care and quality of service.

STAFF

To build on this success, Beechwood continues to invest in its most valuable asset – our exceptional staff. Theaverage number of licensed nurse and certified nursing assistant staff hours per resident per day atBeechwood continues to far exceed both the state and national average.

The table below is taken from the most recent Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) report on theaverage number of licensed nurse and certified staff hours per resident per day.

The recently established Susan Owens Staff Education Fund will be instrumental in furtheringBeechwood’s commitment to “grow our own.” The program will provide eligible staff with the opportunityto receive financial assistance in their pursuit of their dream to become a LPN or RN. Very exciting!

TECHNOLOGY

Fulfilling the community need for the provision of increasingly acute care in a post hospital setting – while maintaining our “Welcome Home” person-centered care mission – remains a strategicfocus for Beechwood. Significant resources and emphasis has been placed on the purchase and implementation ofour new electronic medical record system. The new system enhances the ability of the interdisciplinary care team tocapture real time, paperless documentation of resident specific medical conditions and the corresponding treatmentprovided. Streamlining and securing the process for communicating health information within our network of medical professionals is a critical step to create functionality and connectivity in solidifying Beechwood’s role as anessential, contributing provider in the regional health care continuum.

The dedication and commitment of all staff to this initiative is greatly appreciated and has helpedprepare Beechwood for whatever changes lie ahead in this still uncertain world of state and federalhealth care reform.

SUMMARY

Being proactive in these challenging times has been and still is imperative to Beechwood Continuing Care’ssuccess. Building on positive experiences like our partnership with Hospice Buffalo on Wells House, we hope toidentify additional opportunities to collaborate with other health care organizations and physician groups in 2017.

Growing our continuum of services not only meets the needs of our residents throughout our present commu-nities, but strengthens our ability to meet the ever changing needs of those who will need our services in the future.

The free, informative Open Houses will take place at Asbury Pointe, located at 50 Stahl Road in Getzville (adjacent to Beechwood Homes) on the following Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.:

May 20June 3 and 17 July 15 and 29

Open Houses will also be held on the following Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.:

Guests will be able to tour the grounds – including the beautifully-appointed apartments that feature suchamenities as granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and custom cabinets – speak to current residents, getanswers to the many questions they have and enjoy delicious refreshments.

J oe Frawley was recognized as Beechwood Continuing Care’s DistinguishedHonoree at the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Philanthropy DayLuncheon on last November 15th at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens.

Joe has been a dedicated donor and supporter of Beechwood Continuing Carefor over fifteen years and a trustee of the Beechwood/Blocher Foundation for overfive years where he continues to serve.

There is no one more valuable to an organization than one who is the first tostep up and offer to help. And that is Joe Frawley. He is always available to assist us in any way he can...whether it’s sharing his time, talent or using his professional resources to “get the job done.”

In addition to his support for Beechwood, Joe and his wife,Ann, support The Park School, Big Brothers & BigSisters and Erie Community College Foundation...just to name a few. But, Joe also likes to effect immediatechange in the daily lives of individuals and families less fortunate...and he does it quietly with no fanfare.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals of WNY’s (AFPWNY) National Philanthropy Day is a celebration of benevolent donations of time, talent and treasure that acknowledges individuals and organizationswhose lifetime or long-term achievements have made a significant impact on an organization or the WNY community. This event represents the Western New York Chapter, with membership of nearly 200 fundraisingprofessionals. For over 25 years, AFP has held a November celebration of National Philanthropy Day which hasgrown to be one of the largest events of its type in the United States. Congratulations Joe!

Important Facts to Know About Legacy Gifts– Cheryl A. Wasson, Director of Development/Marketing –

Anew year is a time for reevaluation and planning. It is at this time I receive calls from residents, familiesand friends of Beechwood Continuing Care who have questions regarding how do they go about leaving something in their wills to benefit our Homes and residents. Although, I encourage our donors

to contact their attorney or professional advisor, I do provide them with some basic information.

It is important to note that there is no such thing as an insignificant gift! Anyone can arrange to leavea gift to the Beechwood/Blocher Foundation from his or her estate – no matter the size!

Assuming you already have a will, it is as simple as adding a codicil (amendment) to your existing will. Youcan change it at anytime time you wish.

Some people specify a certain dollar amount to leave to our Homes and others leave a percentage of theirestate or an asset that would be left over after they have provided for their families.

To be sure Beechwood receives your gift, you should state your intention in your will, directing the gift to“The Beechwood/Blocher Foundation” including specific wishes.

In addition to leaving money, you can leave such things of value as personal property, stock, life insurance,retirement funds or an IRA.

If you are comfortable, please notify Beechwood of your charitable legacy gift. We often are not aware ofa bequest or other legacy gift until after the donor’s death. This saddens me in that we will never have thehonor of personally thanking this donor, but more important, we will not have the chance to engage in mean-ingful conversations as to how we could begin to identify areas of interest that will make their gift more personal and meaningful. Whether it is in the form of recognition or to ensure the fundamental intent ofthe gift, telling us at the time the bequest is written opens up so many opportunities.

Bequests and other planned giving vehicles are wonderful ways to provide a legacy gift for our Homes andresidents while meeting your philanthropic intentions. It often times provides tax-savings for you and your family.Please consider Beechwood/ Blocher Foundation in your “legacy” planning for the future.
