NSC or Kombi??

The English-stream follows the School’s career path of the c & d classes until Grade 9, followed by the Independent Examinations Board requirements from Grades 10 – 12. The Kombizweig continues with the Kerncurricula of the a and b classes until Grade 9, as well as the directives of the German Ministry of Education.

WHY THE KOMBIZWEIG?

• The Kombizweig offers the opportunity for the German Abitur, in conjunction with the National Senior Certificate, by treaty agreement between the South African and German governments.

• Tertiary study in Germany, the European Union, the

States, and South Africa is possible.

WHY THE IEB-STREAM?

• The IEB offers a superior National Senior Certificate.

• All NSC learners do the Deutsches Sprachdiplom DSD II in Grade 12, which is a language proficiency certificate required for admission to a German university.

• Tertiary study in Germany, South Africa, and elsewhere is

possible.

THE LANGUAGE QUESTION

• The English-stream is geared towards learners whose mother tongue is English.

• A high level of linguistic competence is required to handle the IEB demands with success.

• Such is the IEB standard of competency that only five 2012 learners achieved As in English, of whom three also achieved As in History.

• The Kombizweig is oriented to German mother-tongue learners. Only the subjects English, Musik/Kunst, LO, Sport are in English.

• At the DSK, as a German school, we encourage all learners, including NSek learners who only joined the School in Grade 5, to consider the Kombizweig if their competence in German permits.

• Both streams finalize at the end of Grade 12 with a respective qualification of international status.

IEB & KOMBIZWEIG ASSESSMENTS

In both streams, practice is afforded in the respective exam techniques for familiarity with paper length, paper format, time-management, level of question and required answer; and, relevant to the IEB-stream, study management for successive daily exams. • Like all other IEB schools (and state schools) bi-annual exams in IEB subjects are written.

• In the Kombizweig termly Klausuren are written.

WEIGHTING OF ASSESSMENTS

The IEB Grade 12 Final Examinations: nation-wide. Kombizweig Prüfungen: together with DSP, DSJ, DHPS.

All 8 IEB subjects have Final written exams in Grade 12. Deutsch, English and a third subject have Final written exams in Grade

12.

IEB May and November exams are weighted to comprise between 50% and 75% of the final outcome. The remainder consists of continuous assessment tasks through the final school year (portfolios) which are subjected to IEB regional and national moderation.

Klausuren and oral marks cumulative from Grade 11 and 12 have equal value, the final schriftliche und mündliche Pruefungen count 25%.

PASSIONATE ABOUT OTHER SUBJECTS??

* Other subjects may be offered for the final Grade 12 IEB examination, by arrangement with the School, such as Information Technology, Music, Drama, Italian, AP Maths, and indeed any subject which is examinable by the IEB. * In these cases parents finance the tuition while the external teacher / service provider has the responsibility of liaising with the School concerning termly tests and examination results. * Tests and exams may be written at the School. * These results appear on the School’s mid-year and year- end Reports. * IEB portfolio requirements have to be fulfilled in Grade 12.

Can I change streams and subjects ?

* Changing subjects is possible in both streams until the end of term 2 in grade 10. * Changing the stream is possible until the end of term 4 in grade 10.
