Shuttlebirds Tatting Guild 23rd Annual Tatting Days & Workshop, "Beach Blanket Bingo”, May 2-5, 2019 1 Please read the class descriptions carefully. Most of the classes are offered only once. Please have your shuttles for each class prepared in advance and any homework done, as required, to save class time. Classes will be filled on a first come basis. The morning classes are 2 hours long and the afternoon classes are 90 minutes each. Classes on both days start at 9:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Please be on time. Skill levels are defined as: Adv. Begin: knows the basics – rings, chains, picots, joins and reading patterns Intermediate: knows and is comfortable with the above, plus two shuttles, split rings/chains, beads Advanced: knows and is comfortable with all of the above and ready for more. Required for all classes: Basic tatting kit: anything and everything you like to use when tatting - scissors, crochet hook, picot gauges, coil-less safety pins, portable light, magnifier, etc. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected] EVENING ACTIVITIES5 Open to all. Friday: 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Tatting Poker Run with Natalie Rogers Natalie's "Choose Your Own Adventure" free -form tatting poker run is back. Participants will draw their cards at various times Thursday evening through Friday afternoon. Friday evening, you will gather to ask questions, swap cards if desired, and tat your 'hand'. It is made using a combination of rings, split rings, folded rings and one self-closing mock ring. It is made of 6 small motifs sewn to a piece of felt. Teacher: Heidi Nakayama Class Type: Project Level: Intermediate Class Limit: 15 This cute little crab measures 3” across. It is made using a combination of rings, split rings, folded rings and one self-closing mock ring. It is made of 6 small motifs sewn to a piece of felt. Beads are optional in the tatting because they can be sewn on to the felt at the end. Two (11 or 8 size) beads are used for the eyes, all other beads are optional

BASIC NEEDLE TATTING Teacher: Sharon Fawns Class Type: Technique Level: Beginner Class Limit: 15 There may be a time when you are unable to manipulate a shuttle but don’t want to give up tatting. This class will cover the basics of needle tatting. Needles will be available for students to use during class. Skills Required: how to thread a needle

NOORJAHAN RUBY NECKLACE Teacher: Georgia Seitz Class Type: Technique Level: Intermediate Class Limit: 15 Muskaan combined the romance of the Mughals with vintage tatting techniques and modern beaded tatting in adapting a 1921 edging pattern into this necklace. It is the centerpiece of her parure, which includes a ring/brooch, earrings and a bracelet, and

introduces a new way of adding beads. INTRODUCTION TO TATSMITHING Teacher: Marie McCurry Class Type: Technique Level: Intermediate Class Limit: 15 This class is required for the Pansy Pendant at 1:00 p.m. In this class you will learn the ‘ins and outs’ of tatsmithing, the art of silver smithing with string. The basis to all tatsmithing is tatting the Basic Design around an object using metallic sewing thread. If you have been afraid to try metallic swing thread, this is the class to take.

This class has required homework. The focus is on how to attach the components during construction and dealing with tight joins. LACE PRINCESS TIARA Teacher: Natalie Rogers Class Type: Project Level: Advanced Class Limit: 15 Every princess deserves a sparkly tiara. Come play with metallic thread and your

favorite bead to create a delightful tiara. Using branching encapsulation, this tiara can be done in just two rounds. Join your fellow Lace Princesses (or Princes) as we tat up this royal treasure. The emphasis for this class will be on adding the ‘sides’ to your ‘Basic Design’ and how to make a sturdy bail for our tatted jewelry. FRACTAL SPIRAL Teacher: Eva Rushton Class Type: Project Level: Adv. Beginner Class Limit: 15 Like a shell, growing outward, create this spiral of rings with a chain edging. This design’s origin was in an ever increasing pattern using fractal mechanics. When completed in pairs, it makes into a set of earrings. The second part of the Fan with Birdie pattern by Dagmar Pezzuto focuses on this cute little hummingbird of block tatting and measured picots.

ICE BLUE SNOWFLAKE Teacher: Marie McCurry Class Type: Technique Level: Adv. Beginner Class Limit: 15 “A Lesson in Bead Placement” is the subtitle for this class. The pre-strung beads are used on both the working threads and core threads to create this stunning snowflake. This class has required homework. BASIC BAUBLES Teacher: Jane McFadgen Class Type: Technique Level: Intermediate Class Limit: 15 There are two types of baubles and their methods of construction are very different. This class will discuss the different methods and how to tell them apart. In the first part of the class we will focus on the construction of the chain bauble, its use of stabilizer bars and how to vary the shape of the finished bauble. Then we will work with the ring bauble to form a little ladybug.

This lovely fan has a decoratgive outer edge of picots leading into 4 rows of ring and chain work. The center is a round of cluny leaf work surrounding a cluny flower upon which a small hummingbird is dining. Skills Required: basic tatting – rings, chains, picot, joins

BEADED SEAHORSE Teacher: Heidi Nakayama Class Type: Project Level: Intermediate Class Limit: 15 This elegant beaded seahorse is a Pam Palmer pattern from her new book. Instruction will also be provided for those that do not wish to use beads. Skills Required: basic tatting skills – rings, chains, picots, joins plus be comfortable with split rings and working with beads

Techniques Taught: n/a Materials: basic tatting kit, 1 shuttle and ball in thread size of your choice, 60 seed beads – size 10/11 for thread sizes 10 & 20, size 15 seed beads for thread size 40. Place the 60 beads on the ball of thread. Wind 3 yards and 2 beads CTM onto the shuttle leaving the remaining beads on the ball. If not using beads, wind 3 yards onto a shuttle, do not cut from ball Kit: n/a

TREFOIL JELLYFISH Teacher: Eva Rushton Class Type: Project Level: Advanced Class Limit: 15 This 3D jellyfish with nested trefoils makes a cute companion with an array of rings spilling under the cap and unique Josephine chains. There’s nothing super tricky, but it is a lot of separate parts and each is different. This class has required homework.

NOORJAHAN RUBY RING / BROOCH Teacher: Georgia Seitz Class Type: Technique Level: Adv. Beginner Class Limit: 15 This ring/brooch is the second piece in Muskaan’s parure named for a 16th century Mughal empress. A gem is encapsulated using metallic thread and regular threads and enhanced with beads to create the finished piece. Add a ring base of pinback and it will be ready to wear.

SAND DOLLAR Teacher: Heidi Nakayama Class Type: Project Level: Adv. Beginner Class Limit: 15 This simple sand dollar pattern, once learned, can be easily embellished with beads. A crystal bead for the center will be provided to all class attendees. This is a good pattern for the beginner tatter or a tatter looking for an easy class to relax in.
