The magazines has two mains of addressing the audience: general address and interview style. The general address has the conventional outspoken rock tone, but the tone attempts to be

slightly agreeable/friendly. This can seen in this example from the content page: “…and if we’re really living in an era of non-progressive copy-cat commercial shit. Yes, I really did just say that.” The tone is outspoken enough to speak it’s opinion clearly, but it also has a that considering tone at the end almost retrospecting on what on was just said. Although it reinforces what was just said adding to the outspoken tone. I kept the tone like this, because it allowed readers not feel too alienated by all the conventions and standards being broken by other elements of the magazine.

The interview tone, is completely different to the general tone. The tone is more something you would find in a book, then a magazine. It’s not too friendly or outspoken, but very apathetic in a very sly way. It’s more descriptive and informative, but maintains an almost chatty feel. The tone can’t stand alone without in-quote information, and the tone in-quote is almost monological memory recall. This creates a thick, almost thought process type text written progressively (eg. having a start and an end). “’What three words would you use to define yourself as a person?’ ‘Music, Art and [being] tired…’ This really didn’t tell anymore about this man.” There three sub-tones in this example; Emerson’s in-quote, Zachary’s recall in-quote and Emerson’s descriptive. All together this makes up the interview tone. The interview also uses some other basic techniques, like asking questions what are answer later in the interview. This tone is very iconological to the magazine helping to create the convention breaking character of the magazine.

Using the rock tone allowed me to attract people who liked the conventional standard, while my interview attracted contrasted it and allowed my textual colour.

I decided against using images of people in magazine, to try and break the convention of hyperreal status given to artists (as I talked about before). So this meant that it was hard to attract my audience, because the lack of visual representation of there social group (something I’ll talk about in the forth bullet point). This meant that the images almost implied (If they brought the magazine) places they would hang out, buy (eg. Headphones in content page), like (fret-board – guitar, piano, ect. Double spread) and other implied elements seen in the magazine’s images. This alienated form of magazine mise-en-scene meant it would was hard to attract anyone to magazine, unless they liked arty images.
