Who would be the audience for your media product?
My Audience
I’ve already done research on who my target audience, but for the sake of my evaluation I’m going recap my primary, secondary and quantitative research.
Secondary Quantitative Research
(All stats come from www.nrs.co.uk) Based on similar magazines within the market (NME and Q) to give a vague idea of what target audience is.
NME
Readers – 333,000 (0.7% market share) Niche – Rock music fans Age – 304,000(92% of readers) are aged
between 15-44, while 29,000(8% of readers) are aged 45+
Gender – 257,000(77% of readers) are male, while 76,000(23% of readers) are female.
From these figures I can see that my target audience will be males aged between 15-44.
Q
Readers – 526,000 (1.1% off the market) Niche – General (pop) music fans Age – 459,000(87% of readers) are aged
between 15-44, while 67,000 (31% of readers) are aged 45+
Gender – 366,000(69% of readers) are male, while 160,00 (31% of readers) are female.
From these figures I can see that my target audience will be males aged between 15-44.
Secondary Research Conclusion
I can draw the conclusion that rock music magazine fans are (mostly and are targeted) males between the ages of 15-44. I’m going to assume there more readers between the ages of 15-25, due to the magazines content being directed are younger people.
Primary Quantitative Research
For my primary research I created a questionnaire that I posted on 3 different music forums. I had around 150 responds, although I could only view only view 100 of those responds so the figures are nicely rounded. The questionnaire was posted to forums that specialized in rock/alt. rock music so they’re part of the niche I’m targeting.

Final Target Audience ConclusionFrom the primary and secondary data I can conclude: Niche – My Niche market will be people into progressive genres
targeting Alternative Rock more. I concluded this from person preference, and not from any research data. An example within the magazine would be on the content page, on the content box for page 13. Where it talks about an article that criticized the state of the music industry within this post-modern age.
Age – From my data I can see my target audience will be more 15-25, with some coming from both under 16s and over 26s groups. An example of me appealing to my target audience within my magazine would be in the double spread. The tone used is a more academic sarcasm. The age group 15-25 would find it easy to understand this. With under 16s finding it harder to understand.
Gender – From my data I can clearly see that my target audience will be mostly males, but I don’t think the style of my magazine is dictated by gender.
Cont. Final Target Audience Conclusion
Interests – My primary data came from the internet, so I can assume they would have technique interest. My magazine had a technique page on content page that will appeal to that interest. In terms on genres, it’s appears that people strongly prefer rock to any other genre, but are opened minded to other genres. My magazine as a whole appears to a lot of genres.
Lifestyles – My age group is 15-25, so I can assume I’m targeting people more in school and university. An example of my magazine appealing to this lifestyle can be seen on the content page, where in the page 17 content box it talks about a festivals guide . Going to festivals is very much seen as a young persons interest.
Socio-economic group – The magazine won’t be directed a social class, although my magazine would have probably criticized the class system in one article or another.
Penumbra effect – My magazine will appeal to a boarderline art audience , because of use of artistic images for background of pages.
