My name is Evan A. Butler and I am a native Tennessean, born and raised in Nashville. I have a love for all things visual whether graphic design, photography or motion pictures. Currently with the support of my wife and two kids I am a returning student to Middle Tennessee State University to complete my Advertising-Public Relations Concentration, B.S. with a minor in Marketing and Psychology.

The first quarter of my career has been spent as a freelance photographer and graphic designer while holding down a full-time position at such companies as Pepsico, Dell and Fedex. My dream job has always been to work for an advertising agency. My passion for all things media and design has pushed me to further my involvement with clients beyond taking photos and creating content for them.

My life story and journey to where I’m currently at in life is unique, so that a traditional resume does not do it justice. In the following pages I have included some in-depth information about myself, my life and my work. Please feel free to contact me with any further questions or to schedule an interview.

Taking my time to finish my Bachelors degree has proven to be a great life experience to prepare me for a career in Advertising. I have been able to take classes that will actually apply to real-life situations in the workforce rather than just speed through the general courses in order to obtain a degree. I am a full-time family man doing everything to benefit my wife and kids. Freelancing was great early in my kids lives and marriage but now that my kids are older and more independent I can dedicate more time and energy into my career with an ad agency.

Returning to MTSU as an adult was a very hard decision for me and my family to make. I gave up working full-time to dedicate time to learning the ins and outs of my trade from an advertising perspective. I was nervous to jump back into school with students that were on average ten to twelve years younger than me. I’ve had to rely heavily on my life experience and knowledge of the field to keep up with students who don’t have the responsibilities that I do weighing them down.

The experience has been positive. With the help of some very supportive professors and to my surprise a very accepting student body, I’ve made the most out of returning to finish my degree. At times I felt it was foolish, especially when there were times that living on my wifes single income wasn’t the most lucrative. I’ve had to ask myself if I really wanted to continue pursuing a dream that I was twelve years behind in or do I want to go out and work a simple 9-5 just to make ends meet. The answer was clear, not always to me but sometimes to my family, professors and fellow students, that I needed to finish what I started. As of May 2015 I will complete my Bachelor Degree. It’s never too late!

My personal work experience has proven to be a valuable tool for my future goals. I have done freelance for many types of clients on many different levels. I have learned to be proficient in several design programs. Being a one stop shop for all things media has advanced my overall knowledge of advertising and marketing techniques. While working on small projects for private clients I’ve had complete creative control of all materials yielding only to the owner or manager. It has been a great experience but it has also driven me crazy at times. For example, when working on a web design project for a client and you need the photos to complete the web site from the photographer yet you are the photographer, designer, creative manager and sales person all wrapped into one.

I have found that I have a desire and passion to become an account manager or managing directing for an ad agency. To see the pieces of a project come together is a great feeling and priceless all at the same time. Large scale projects fascinate me to the extent that I like to have something to do with all aspects of it. Whether it be researching the target audience or designing the product logo. I feel that having the knowledge of a graphic designer, eye of a photographer, sales & leadership experience to organize makes me the perfect candidate to one day fill that position for an agency. I don’t expect to jump directly into one of those roles right out of college but I am willing to do what it takes to get there.

MY GOALS

Page 5: Evan Butler Resume Book

Graphic design has always been a part of my life some how or another. My interest in graphic design officially started as a student at the SAE Institute as an audio engineering student. I was a 19 year old aimless student at the time and I thought that I was going to be the next big producer in the music industry. Our final project was due which involved working with an actual musician through the whole process of creating an EP. No one on our team had official previous design experience but I new that I was capable of producing anything that I set out to. So I went and purchased Photoshop and learned how to create a CD cover for the client. From that point I was hooked and it was the unofficial start to my freelance career. No project was to big or small

for me to tackle. I started designing everything from business card and brochures to entire web sites for clients. Photo editing for other photographers while I was strictly a graphic designer also gained me a lot of experience in graphic design. Most successful photographers rarely have time to edit their own work. Below are a few business cards that I’ve created for clients as well as a good example of what a photo editor does for a photographer.

As a freelance photographer the opportunity to photograph everything from musicians and athletes to families, corporate businesses has arisen. The work is fast, fun and upbeat. I’ve eased my way into photography over the past ten years by way of graphic design. Most of my small business clients were always in need of good quality photographs for their promotional material that I was designing for them. I am a passionate person about the work that I create for clients. Handing off my work to never see it again or not know what came of the work that I completed for clients has always been a sore spot me, hence the reason I strive to work as a part of a team in

an ad agency. With-in the field of photography, sports photography is one of the categories that I excel in. Over the years I have shot for clients such as Associated Press, Icon Sports Media and The Columbia Daily Herald. Below are some samples of my sports photography.
