45. List the teaching methods adopted by the faculty for different programmes.

The various teaching methods adopted by the faculty are as under:

• Chalk and Board

• PPT presentation through LCD projectors

• Transparencies using OHP

• Uploading course material on the website

• Uploading ongoing attendance and performance record on the webkiosk

• Industrial and site visits

Page 61: Evaluative Report of the Department 1. Civil Engineering

348

46. How does the department ensure that programme objectives are constantly met and

learning outcomes are monitored?

In order to ensure the fulfillment of program objective, Department has constituted a

programme assessment committee. The program outcome assessment committee assessed the

program outcomes with the help of course outcomes of the relevant courses through direct and

indirect methods.

Direct measures are provided through direct examinations or observations of student

knowledge or skills against measureable course outcomes.

The knowledge and skills described by the course outcomes are mapped to specific problems on

internal exams/home assignment/group task. Throughout the semester the faculty records the

performance of each student on each course outcome. The sample course assessment is enclosed

in course file and on webkiosk. At the end of the semester, students receive grades from

external exams.

Indirect assessment strategies are implemented by embedding them in the Student Reaction

Survey, Graduate survey, Alumni Survey and Employer survey which is conducted by program

assessment committee in each year.

Finally, program outcomes are assessed with above mentioned data and Program Assessment

Committee concludes the PO attainment level. Also program assessment committee identify the

need for improvement and they prepare an action plan accordingly. Once the action has been

completed, data for that performance indicator should again be collected, analyzed, and

evaluated by the program assessment committee to see the performance. This process continues

until the performance improve to the target value. The results are also discussed with

Department Academic Affairs Committee.

47. Highlight the participation of students and faculty in extension activities.

2009-10

Saluting Thy Master’s

The event provided was organised so that students from different years from discipline

of civil engineering may come together and show a gesture of gratitude to our teachers

who have put their untiring effort in bringing the best out of us.

Interaction seminar

Dr. Maneek Kumar, HCED, interacted with students regarding the prospects of civil

engineering as well as the marvels that have constructed around world.

Presentation on significance of use of HVFAC

The audience was made aware of harmful effects of global warming and the

contribution being made by construction industry in deteriorating our environment,

preventive measures need to be taken, how HVFAC can help in solving the problem.

Expert Involved: Mr. T.P.Singh, an IIT-D alumni with an experience of 27 years in

industry.

Treasure Hunt

The participants were given clues which had their base on civil engineering; the

competition provided them with an opportunity to use their earned knowledge of class

in the open ground of wits.

Technical events in ARANYA’09

There were two events organised by Aranya committee comprising of TSCE members.

Events were:-

1. Bridge It

2. Excel with Excel

In First event participants were given a problem on spot which dealt with modelling of

bridge so that it is able to sustain applied loads, large participation was witnessed in the

event.

In Second event participants were given a truss problem, which required development

of program capable of analysing given truss use of Microsoft Excel.

Amazing Race and T-shirt designing competition

This event contained two rounds. First round was technical quizzing .Then the 2nd

round had some informal as well purely technical rounds which judged participant on

physical as well as intellectual grounds.

Pinnomania

The event required the participants to build structure tall and stable with the help of

straws and pins. Height and stability were the two criteria on which judgment was

based. Winners were also given prizes.
