COURSE DESCRIPTION: Intermediate Reading & Composition (3 units)This is a course in reading and writing designed to strengthen the student's ability to use basic communication skills, including grammar, punctuation, & mechanics. MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS:EssaysAll assignments are uploaded through Canvas and do not require a hard copy. Students must submit essays by the due dates. Essays may not be emailed to the instructor. Students are responsible for submitting documents in Word or PDF format. Most writing applications that are not Microsoft Word have an option under “File” to “Save As” or “Export As” PDF. All writing assignments must be in MLA format. All essays that require sources must have in-text citations and a Works Cited page. Your final essay, the research paper, is worth the most points. It is the culmination of all we have learned throughout the semester.

PrewritingPrewriting is informal writing and brainstorming done before your first draft. Prewriting instructions for each essay can be found at the bottom of the essay guidelines in the folder “Prewriting and Essay Guidelines.” A prewriting assignment is not a rough draft. It is a set of numbered activities you should complete. I do not grade spelling and grammar for prewriting, but I do expect you to follow proper MLA format.

Discussion BoardYour initial post, based on the topic presented, is due by 11:59 PM Wednesday evenings. Your second post responds to other students and is due by 11:59 PM Sunday evenings. You need to respond to at least two student posts in the discussion forum to receive full points. Every post (or reply to a post) that you write has the same

The highest grade will stay in the grade book. All quizzes are untimed and open book. Quizzes cover book chapters and MLA topics.

Group WorkIn groups of 3-4 students, you will create a document called “How to Follow MLA and Avoid Plagiarism.” Imagine that this document is going to read by incoming freshmen. Using what you’ve learned from the MLA folder and the Plagiarism Certificate, create a document with your group that gives students tips on how to format their paper, how to paraphrase, and how to avoid a charge of plagiarism. All group work is done virtually. Be sure to use your own words, but feel free to be creative. Make this document at least 1 page long.

Peer ReviewFor essays 2-4, you will submit a rough draft of your essay on the Wednesday of the week before the final draft is due. You will then leave comments on two other students’ rough drafts the following Sunday. Use this feedback to improve your essay. You will receive 10 points for submitting a rough draft and 10 points for reviewing the drafts of two other students (total possible points: 20).

Final ExamThe final exam covers a combination of topics featured in the MLA quizzes. The final is timed and open book. It may only be taken one time.

INSTRUCTOR CONTACT/AVAILABILITY:This course officially begins on Monday, August 28, and ends on Wednesday, December 13, 2017. If you email me during the week (M-Fr), I will try to respond within 24 hours. Weekends/holidays may take a little longer.

ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION: Active participation is essential to this course. You must keep up with readings, participate in discussions, and complete quizzes and writing submissions. During the semester, if you do not demonstrate your presence on a weekly basis via your postings and the submission of your required homework, you will be dropped from this class. Students are dropped for non-attendance. If you do not post your first discussion board posting by Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at 11:59pm of the first week, you may be dropped. One week of “absence” (or in this case non-participation) will result in being dropped from this class, just as one week of absence in an on-campus class would result in being dropped from the class. If you need to drop this class, do so officially before the last drop date. Check the LAMC schedule. I do not give incompletes or allow late assignments.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING WRITING ASSIGNMENTS:All writing assignments need to be formatted according to MLA style: 12 point font, Times New Roman, 1 inch margins. NO late essays will be accepted. If necessary, I reserve the right to submit any essays I suspect of plagiarism through turnitin.com as well. Technical problems involving personal equipment or data, internet access, or the misuse of Canvas will not be considered valid excuses for late work. Don’t wait until the last minute to submit your paper! Please also use a proper MLA header for every assignment you submit. You can

Academic Honesty:Plagiarism is the use of another person’s words as if they were your own. Plagiarism will result in a failing paper and possibly failing the class. By following MLA conventions, you limit your chance of plagiarism.If you do not use MLA formatting including in-text citations and a Works Cited page, you will receive an “F” for your paper. If you have doubts about how to follow MLA format to document sources, check with your instructor before the paper is due. Cheating or the copying of another’s work is of no value in terms of your progress. Students are expected to follow the Standards of Student Conduct as outlined in the LAMC Catalog.

Enrollment Limit: 3 Repeat Rule There is a new LACCD enrollment limit. The limit is now three times to take a class and includes W (withdrawal), D, F, and NP (no pass) grades. Students will not be allowed to register for any course in LACCD if there are three recorded attempts for that course in any combination of W, D, F, and NP grades.

Technical Access and Skills: An online course requires consistent access to a computer, a strong, reliable internet connection, and some basic

knowledge on using email, word processing programs, and internet browsing. If you are not competent in these skills, consider taking a traditional lecture class.
