The project that is up for consideration for evaluation is a program available for Florida schools. The purpose of the program is to deal with discipline issues faced in schools across the state. It is called Positive Behavior Support or PBS and is off ered through the University of South Florida in Tampa.

The purpose of this project is to help foster positive behavior. The goal of the project is to reduce the number of offi ce discipline referrals. A PBS team is developed at the school to develop school wide expectations of staff and students. Each school can create their own set of expectations or rules to abide by. The school that will be the focus of this project is Patterson Elementary, a Title 1 school in Bay County Florida. With a high minority and poverty rate at this particular school, discipline is a constant issue. The expectations they have set forth for the faculty and student body is: Respect, Responsibility, and Safety .

Were the number of referrals down this school year as compared to last year after teachers implemented the PBS program into their classroom?

Is there evidence in a rise of examples of positive behavior displayed by the students?

Did productivity of the faculty as well as students increase?

Is there correlation between a decrease in referral, an increase in positive behavior, and improvement in grades?

How does the character development class aid in aid reaching the goal.

Professional development course on how to use and implement the PBS program through materials provided by University of South Florida.

To create one cohesive behavior program school wide using the PBS format.

PBS computer program for inputting referrals as well as recognized good behavior for qualitative data.

Weekly to bi=weekly meetings with representatives for qualitative discussions and make any improvements necessary.

Students will attend a Character Development class given by the Guidance Counselor.

Discipline records from the school year prior.

Data from the PBS program used this year by the faculty and staff.

Grade reports from the school year prior to compare with this school year for any residual effects of fewer referrals.

Total number = 47 Faculty, Staff and Administration.

K-5 th grade students Total number = 478 Students

Data will be collected and reviewed from the previous school year for a starting point.

Weekly qualitative meetings among the administration and the representatives of the faculty and staff to discuss morale and perceived involvement.

Monthly meeting to review quantitative data from the program.

End of the year evaluation to compare the results of the current year to the previous year.

Faculty and staff will attend a professional development course.

Teachers, administration and staff will implement and monitor the PBS plan.

The school guidance counselor will teach character developement class that each class will attend one day a week to promote character building.

Grade and staff representatives, along with administration will attend weekly to bi-weekly meetings for qualitative discussions and make any improvements necessary.

The evaluator will look at the formative as well as summative data to see if the PBS program was effective and effi cient.

The evaluator will also take qualitative analysis from participants.

If these are found favorable, then the decision will be made to permanently implement the PBS discipline program.
