    Evaluation for my media

    QUESTION 1

For this question I will be taking 9 screen shots from horror trailers and trying to link

them with 9 screen shots of my teaser trailer, but obviously some of the shots will

contrast my trailer because the real horrors will have had a lot of money spent on them

and they would also have had much more time on their hands to produce a good trailer

along with a good film. I will then be looking at the traditional forms and conventions of

a horror trailer, such as mise-en-scene.

    Screen shot 1

    REAL DISORDER

These two shots are very similar to one another because of the type of shot they are and

what they are able to give away of the scene and the surroundings of the character. The

only difference between the two is that the clip from paranormal activity is through a

cinema screen showing the scene. The mise-en-scene in both of these clips are very

similar because they are both in the same room of the house. The shots arent so similar

though and this is because the shot on the left is through two scenes, whereas the shot

from my teaser trailer is straight from the camera onto the screen. I think that the

lighting in the left hand shot, from paranormal activity is far better than the lighting in

my teaser trailer. However, considering the quality of the camera that we could use, Ithink that we have produced a good quality shot here.

    Screen shot 2

    REAL. DISORDER.

    2/15

These two shots here are of the same thing but both taken from different angles. The

one on the left is an extreme close up of the body bag being zipped up and that is all thatis in the frame. The shot from my trailer is a mid-shot of the dead body being zipped up

and you can see this through just one shot whereas the shot from the trailer on the left

you get the same picture but you get a much better understanding of what is going on

the frame through the clip from my trailer compared to the clip from the trailer for side

    effects.

    REAL DISORDER

The shot from paranormal I like because of the lighting and the immediate sense of time

you get because of the darkness. The darkness also sets the mood within the mise-en-

scene. There is only one similarity that I can see with both of these shots and that there

is something super-imposing the video clip which I think works well with both,

especially my trailer because this has made it look much more realistic and therefore

made it much more believable to the audience that this is a real, professional trailer.

    REAL DISORDER.

There is no connection between these two shots but I wanted to look at both of these

clips and talk about them and the conventions that they have. The shot on the left is avery good shot because you see the main character with someone who cares for her and

therefore you get an understanding of the people around her and this is good because

you need to know her background a little bit to get to grips with the events that are

unfolding. The shot from my trailer is a good, traditional thing that you see in virtually

every trailer and this is titles, which can tell a story in it. They just aid the trailer and

make it much easier for people to understand what is going on within the trailer.

    REAL DISORDER

These two clips are the two which are the most similar to one another in when I tried

to find a clip which went with the one from my trailer and this clip on the left is the one

which I considered to be the one which was the closest to it. The shot and the angle of

the camera are the same which is a very strong link straight away. They have both been

taken from a side on angle of the main characters. I think that that the impression that

the emotion on the faces of the two characters are similar too. The emotions that they

are going through here are the same and they are sad, distressed and angry and also

    quite worried.

  • 7/28/2019 Evaluation for My Media Trailer

    4/15

    REAL DISORDER

It is clear what the link is between these two pictures. That is that the type of shot which

has been used make these shots work so well. They are both in the same environment

and this means that the mise-en-scene for both of these shots is going to be the same.

The characters emotions are very similar too. I prefer the lighting in the left hand side

one because I think that this sets the mood of the scene much better than our one

because this is a good type of lighting which creates this mood which is very dark and

    evil almost.

    REAL DISORDER.

Its weird how much these two clips are related because when we were making our

trailer, the side effects trailer wasnt even released and to get a shot from that trailer tobe in our trailer before the real one had been released is just weird. These shots are of

  • 7/28/2019 Evaluation for My Media Trailer

    5/15

the same principle because the doctors are dealing with extremely similar patients. This

therefore has created two identical shots, apart from the camera angle but apart from

that the mise-en-scene for each of these clips are virtually identical too.

    REAL. DISORDER

These two shots are totally different but I think they are what can make a trailer have

the professional finish. The shot from the trailer which is of side effects is very

professional and if you were to watching how the fade works. With the clip from my

trailer, I like the realism that this camera angle adds to the trailer and how cheap and

effective this is to do, which is perfect for college students to use simply and purely

because of the cheapness of it.

    REAL. DISORDER

I really like this shot from the side effects trailer because it makes you feel as if you arethere and you are having the tablets poured onto you and this makes it that much more

  • 7/28/2019 Evaluation for My Media Trailer

    6/15

so real. The depth of field in this camera shot is extremely good because it is focusing on

the tablets falling onto the lens of the camera which gives a very unique feel to it. I like

the gore which is visible in the shot from my trailer which is a good thing in a horror

trailer and the way that we created this gore was very easy and cheap to do.

The very good thing about a good teaser trailer is that they are very good ways of

marketing a film and getting the audience interested in the film without giving away too

much. In every teaser trailer, you will see the same things and they are called

conventions. Things such as the mise-en-scene which is basically everything in the

scene including things from props, to the characters and their clothing. Even though the

camera work in a trailer may be different in every trailer you watch, they are all using

the same basic techniques which is why we do not notice a difference as an audience.

Sound can be deceiving in different trailers because of how you can edit the same sound

but in very different ways. Things such as the tone and pitch of the sound can change

one sound into a completely different sound. The same cut edit can be changed in so

many different ways such as the time of a fade or dissolve and the way that they do

these changes in the editing. The message from the director of the film who obviously

has the most say in what is done to the trailer such as editing and things such as that is

that they want to keep with the traditional way of editing, such as short cuts. They will

also want to make sure that things are clear such as titles which make things much

easier when it comes to explaining what is happening in the movie. The director will

also want the audience to identify characters and who they are in terms of their

celebrity status. It is good to stick to the conventions of a horror trailer because if not

you will lose an audience which has taken years to attract to this genre and that is thelast thing you will want because then you will inevitably see a dramatic fall in the sales

and then film makers will find it hard to meet the need demands of the audience.

However it is good to push the boundaries because there have been so many horror

trailers made in the past and the things have been repeated, numerous times and

therefore if you push the boundaries with something new then you will be making more

of an impact on the audience than if you were just to stick to the usual way of making a

    horror movie.

I think that the lack of sound in my trailer is the downfall to it because if you look at the

real trailers their sounds have much more impact on the audience and they really take a

grip of you and make you want to know more about the film and the storyline. I think

that we havent made a bad effort at using sound in our trailer because the sound that

which was made on sound garage is very effective considering it has been made from

scratch. However I think that the dialogue or lack of is the thing which definitely differs

our teaser trailer to any real teaser trailer.

    QUESTION 2

The film distributor is possibly one of the most important parts to making sure the film

is very well advertised and people see in all forms of media. Surveys are done to find

out where the target audience to see where the best place to advertise the product. This

helps the producers of the film to have a better understanding and will inevitably widen

the target audience. Various ways of getting the film across to the audience are used

    such as:

TV Billboards Smartphones Web ads Cinema ads Newspaper Magazines.

All of the above are the most common forms of media which are used to make sure that

all areas are covered when it comes to distributing a film when it is in the pipeline and

hasnt been released yet. Marketing can differ massively depending on the target

audiences demographics which are vital to know when you are advertising a product

such as a movie. In some more deprived areas where the target audience are, the

distributors of the film will have to think about what the people can access. Not

everyone can access the internet or TV, but the large majority of the audiences can

access a newspaper of a magazine. It is key to make sure that all of the areas are covered

to ensure that your product will get the best advertisement possible to maximise salesand viewings.

Audience research is very important too. If the company were not to do research into

their audience then they wouldnt have a clue what the audience are wanting from the

film and would therefore make a film which would probably be irrelevant to what the

    audience what from the film.

The way that these two posters differ from one another is because of the facial

expressions which you can see on the main characters faces. The poster on the left is ahorror which is filled with gore and blood because of the murders which the main

character committees. This would attract a totally different audience to the poster on

the right. When researching the audience for these films the distributing company

would have to think about things such as how much gore do they want? Especially for

the poster on the left. The main image on the poster is the main difference with these

posters. The picture on the left immediately signals gore to me and the audience

because of the way which the character is standing and the weapon that he is holding.

Unified identity is very important in the whole process because you do not want each

ancillary text to look different. For example the colours should be kept the same on

things such as the posters and in the magazine. If the colour schemes are not the same

then this would not look professional and certainly wouldnt make people think that a

certain colour scheme applies to a certain film. When people see certain colours, it will

hopefully trigger a thought of when they looked at either a poster of a film or a

magazine and then they will apply this to the film which could be coming out. The

design on the poster will be the face of your film to not only your target audience but

will be seen by others who may not be attracted to the horror genre but if you were to

make a good job of the product which will be in the eyes of the media then you may

increase the interest of others to watch horror movies. The better posters which havebeen of films which have been released in the past, you can tell a lot about the film, just

from a poster. This acts as the narrative which will be seen by a lot of people and you

dont want them misunderstanding the storyline which they can make out from just

looking at the poster, or any of the ancillary texts.

The way I went about marketing my product was to make a poster just like a

professional film and a magazine cover which will also support my final product. The

reason why I chose this way to present my ancillary text and final product is because of

the research which I did, finding out what people within the target audience use the

most. The media form which I found that was used the most was the two that I chose to

use. You can see this from the results which have been published on my blog.

The facial expressions on Maisie face is very similar

and the lighting is very subtle in a similar way. The two

expressions are meaning the same thing but at the same time, slightly different. The

poster has a different narrative because of

the way that Maisie is standing and holding

her finger up against her lips. Whereas the

clip from the trailer, she is looking much

serious but because both of her faces are very

blank it is easy to link the two together just

by identifying the main character. The

positioning of the main character is the same

which is very key in these two shots because

you want the audience to know who the main

character is because if not they could easily

become confused with other characters and

may think that they character, when in fact

    they arent. are the main

To be able to get onto a front cover of horror magazine to promote your film would be

the pinnacle of all advertisement format. This is because your target audience will be

buying this magazine to see what new films are coming out which

are in their interest. This will inevitably increase your sales and

viewings of your film. Even if people are not interested in the horrorgenre then you will be able to attract a new audience because your

film will be in the eyes of everyone who will be looking at your

    magazine on the shop shelf.

For my inspiration I used a couple of posters because I wanted to

find the ones which when combined would help me create a good

poster for the type of horror which I was making.

The poster to the left here was the

poster which I used to find a posterwhich had this picture in the middle, with the main

character being in the middle which I think works well

because it makes it very clear to the audience who is the

main character. The only difference with this poster and

mine is that I have used very different lighting, the

lighting in this one is very dark, whereas mine the

lighting is much lighter which I should have changed

when it comes to think of it. The poster on the right is

the poster which I used to get an idea of where the text

would look best and that was why I chose to put the text

on my poster where it is on mine.

    The reason

    why I have

    chosen this

    type of layout

    with the textin the postions

    which they are

    in is because I

    used one of

    Empires

    magazine

    covers as a

    template and

    positioned the

    texts in similar

    places. This

    was because I

    wanted my

    magazine

    cover to look

    as professional

    as I possibly

    could.

    The reason

    why I chose

    these

    particular

    colours was

    becasuse I

    thought this

    was a colour

    scheme which

    is very

    attracting to

    the eye. This is

    what I wanted

    to achieve.

    The reason

    why I chose to

    use this

    picture out of

    all of the

    pictures that

    were taken on

    shoot of our

    characters is

    because this

    particular

    image is

    because of the

    way in whichthe character

    is posing. It

    makes her

    look very

    intimidating

    and this makes

    her seem

    much more

    powerful and

    eye catching

    than if she was

    just to be

    pulling a

    straight face,

    for example.

This was the only magazine cover which I used for my

inspiration while I was making mine. The reasons why I

chose to use this magazine was because of the way the

text was so central and right in the middle of the page

and the circle with the text in appealed to me too. As you

can quite clearly see that I have taken the colour scheme

from this magazine cover and used it in mine. I used this

on Photoshop, underneath my magazine cover, but just

weakened the transparency of this layer which then

allowed me to position things in a similar way, but also

add my own touch to it.

For my own poster, I chose to lay it out the way I did

because I wanted a simple look. With nothing on the

image, and barely any text I think that I have achieved

this. I have mirrored the colour scheme because I didnt

want to go against it. I love the lighting which was used

on the day of the photoshoot. This is clearly artificial light

but I think that it highlights the main character. This isthe reason why I have chosen to put her in the centre of

the frame to notify the audience that this who the film is

going to be about. Each group of text was put onto a

separate layer, which then made it much easier to move

the text around without having to move any text which I

    didntwant to move.

    13/15

    Question 3.

From my audience feedback I have learnt that the trailer does have a few things which

can be changed to it and I think that this feedback is vital because if not then how would

we have known what to change. Audience feedback is very important and without itproducers of films wouldntknow what else they can do to the film, and best of all

knowing exactly what the audience want because they have stated what they want.

How we gathered our information was through a questionnaire which was given to each

class member to do while they watched each trailer three times. This then allowed them

to have a good understanding of the trailer. By the third viewing they would know what

wasntso good about the trailer and those things which were much better and should be

left alone. Due to the questionnaire my group were then able to make the changes which

the class advised that we should do. This was a very good way of putting it straight to

the point and telling us what we needed to do in order to make improvements to thetrailer.

The sort of things that they were said to me about all of my products was that more

dramatic music should have been used in the trailer.

Shots were too quick. Fades were too quick. The way which the trailer begins is too quick and it would be better if it was

longer, not jumping straight into the first shot.

Could have used a wider variety of shots. How we have done this is by doing the improvements that were recommended that we

do. So we went back onto Photoshop and then we simply made the changes to the

trailer, which has evidently made the trailer better than what it was before other people

were allowed to see it on the screen in class.

The things which people mentioned which they liked were:

The speed at which the tension was built. The use of titles. The sounds which were made on garage band were effective. The montage of images which was used in the trailer was very effective.

These things were left just like normal because if we were to change these then this

would be going against the audience feedback which is very valuable to us when we are

making the changes to the trailer, or not may the case be.

    Question 4.

I used the technologies in the construction of my media product by using Photoshop to

edit the footage which we recorded. I used Photoshop to also make the poster and the

  • 7/28/2019 Evaluation for My Media Trailer

magazine cover. This was very easy to use for both of the different stages for which I

used the CS6 version of Photoshop which allowed me to use this for all of the final

products that I have made for my A2 coursework. Another form of media which I used

was garage band which a piece of software on the apple macs which you can use to

create any sound which you wish to make. I used the web 2.0 to research horror moviesand the genre and the background behind what is an amazing genre if you are to

research and look into the genre in detail.

The equipment that I had to use was very simple and effective to use. For example:

Apple Macs, very technical with the finish that they give you but at the same timethey are very easy to use.

The video cameras very extremely user friendly. Final cut pro was the piece of software which I was surprised by the most, this

was because this is used by the professionals and to be able to give people likeme a similar finish was very good because this gave the trailer the professional

touch which I was looking for.

Spacefont is the website which I got my text for the title of my movie for both mymagazine cover and my poster.

The tripods were good considering they belonged to the college and for a collegeto have such good quality tripods was

Blogger, this is the best bit of technology which I have used because it is theeasiest to use but probably the most effective one because without this then I

think would have found it very hard to find another site which I could haveblogged my work on without struggling to upload things.

Youtube is where my trailer has been uploaded to and this is a site which can beused with ease and is cheap to use.

In fact the last to media forms were very cheap to use and thanks to this, manyother people who are on a low budgets can make something which can be to a

    very high standard.

I simply used myself to try and get things to people such as the audience questionnaire

and for this how I kept a low budget because I used this technique to distribute and at

the same time I was promoting my film because I was able to interact with the target

    audience.

In conclusion my whole coursework project has gone very well and I am pleased with

the final products which have come from it. Without the technology I wouldnthave

been able to do this and this is why I rely on media formats to present work because

they can do such a good job at doing it.
