How does your media product represent

particular social groups?

Page 2: Evaluation 2

My media product represents mostly teenagers of the “rock” genre.

This music has it’s own social group. This social group is usually represented as angry, and loud and self-destructive and just generally very negative. I have indeed tried to challenge this negative view through my magazine, however in some cases I have followed this representation to an extent. For example, my Masthead is “Architects VS Bring Me The Horizon”. I wouldn’t say that this encourages violence, but it certainly doesn’t dispute it. This shouldn’t, however, reflect on the target audience.

I have however challenged this by showing that self-expression through music and things related are very positive things, and that even if you belong to the “rock” genre, you don’t HAVE to have tattoos and dye your hair. My models on the front cover and contents page demonstrate this.

The majority of the people/pictures in the magazine are males. This shows that my product is reaching out to females as they’re a minority of my audience. To have to reach out to them in this way shows the vanity of the teenage girl market.

The content of my magazine suggests that the audience are deeply interested in the certain bands and people mentioned in the magazine. This is because even though I only mentioned approximately 5 bands in my product, it will still appeal to the majority of the social group. Some people will still buy the magazine even if the bands aren’t particularly interesting to them. This shows the dedication of rock fans.

The writing style of my product suggests that my audience are more casual, and informal. This is probably due to the fact that the majority are 16-20 years old.
