Wastewater treatment

Moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR)

Ideal for large vessels. Extreme energy efficiency:

low energy and chemical consumption, low

operating costs, and minimal daily operational

requirements.

Advanced membrane bioreactor (MBR)

Compact design with excellent treatment results. No

chemicals needed in normal operations. Low power

and maintenance needs. Meets US Coast Guard

standards.

Advanced Wastewater Treatment Solutions for Ships:

IMO 227(64) compliant nutrient removing units

Waste minisation: Cruise Ship Waste Characteristics

• Extensive Shipboard study on waste

operations done recently on several cruise

ships

• Lately comprehensive waste sampling done

on 7 cruise ships; Up to 10 m3 sample size

• Sorting test for definition of recyclable

materials

• Elemental and calorific analysis per each

sorted fraction

• High variation of dry waste moisture

Waste Minimisation: Identifying separately collectable

materials by waste sorting tests

Nov 7, 2016 9

Waste Minimisation: Identifying recyclable materials

• Good knowledge on shipboard waste composition by sorting tests

• IMO waste represents well the shipboard dry waste

• Source-sorting of cardboard on cruise ships is fairly effective

• High waste reduction by paper and plastic bottle sorting on the hotel

areas of cruise ships.

• Evac will keep collecting the waste data in the future

Dry and wet waste treatment

Macerating vacuum food waste system

Easy-to-maintain system includes small piping, bringing repair and space benefits.

Cyclone Incinerator

New generation moving crate incinerator with high energy efficiency due to optimized

burning process, compact size, and highest burning capacity and cleanest flue gas on

the market. Can be combined with energy recovery system.

Waste briquetting unit

Volume reduction of non-recyclable mixed waste to one-tenth or for briquetting

recyclable material such as tin or cardboard to reduce volume of stored dry waste.

Discussion:

Nov 7, 2016 12

• Waste management in modern cruise ships are effective and flexible

• Waste material recovery can be increased onboard cruise ships and

the limitations are known.

• Common and standardized method for port reception of wastes is

needed

• Cooperation between shipowners and port operators and waste

management solution supplier (Evac)

• Adaptation of the cruise ship waste management according to

selected pathway of port operation

• The recycling ratio is limited to c. 40 %

• The onboard waste incineration is and will be needed, because of

non-recyclable multimaterial waste,

• Port mode for waste incineration – Definition of flue gas limits?
