Eva Casale For many people, running 184 miles might seem impossible, but for Eva Casale of Glen Cove, it’s just another week. Casale, 52, is running the Suffolk marathon for the second time. “I'm looking forward to running the Suffolk County Marathon and once again, supporting the Suffolk County Veterans series,” Casale said. It’s “not just an endurance event, it is a way for us to remember and honor our troops, our veterans, and our fallen heroes. In every step we take and endure during this marathon, we show appreciation.” The third annual Catholic Health Services Suffolk County Marathon, Half Marathon, 5k, and newest race, 4 Person Marathon Relay, to Support our Veterans, is being held on Oct. 29. The races will start and finish in the village of Patchogue. Last year’s races netted $140,000 for Suffolk County veterans’ services such as therapy dogs, PTSD counseling, housing, and much more. On her website, Casale encourages that “you can live your life for yourself…and others, at the same time,” and she definitely lives by that motto. In 2006 she donated a kidney to a stranger. She has also run in over 50 full marathons and 30 ultramarathons that benefit different charities. Since she last ran in the Suffolk marathon in 2015, Casale has started Team EVA (Every Veteran Appreciated). Team EVA raises money for Hope for the Warriors. For the past two years they have done so by running 7 marathons in 7 days (184 miles total) throughout Suffolk County in hopes to honor and increase awareness for our troops, veterans, and fallen heroes. Casale receives much support from the community. “The Suffolk County Executive and his staff have always been very supportive of the Team E.V.A. 184 mile running event that I do each year,” she said. Anyone can join her team, from donating on her website or even taking part in her runs. She has raised more than $250,000. The Oct. 29 races will be followed by the FreedomFest: The Taste of Long Island Festival, which features Long Island foods, wines and craft beers. Bands and other activities are also planned.
