Unforgettable moments are guaranteed on and along the roads of these Alpine Passes. Take your time and you will enjoy it immense- ly no matter if you travel by car, motorbike, classic car, racing bike, mountain bike or take the Glacier Express, Furka Mountain Steam Railway or the Post Bus. Further tips and touring suggestions: www.faszination-alpenpässe.ch SCHÖLLENEN GORGE The Schöllenen Gorge, with the Devil’s Bridge, is the his- torical landmark at the entrance to the Ursern valley and also to the Gotthard region. The legend has it that the Devil built this bridge and in 1950 Heinrich Danioth ac- tually painted the Devil on the rock face. The Schöllenen circular trail is easy to walk and takes about 30 minutes at a leisurely pace. It is accessible during the summer months and offers breathtaking views into the gorge allowing the myth of the Gotthard to be experienced up close. EUROPE’S WATERSHED After you leave the Oberalp Pass, it takes about one and a half hours on foot to reach Lake Toma, 2,345 m above sea level, and the birthplace of the Rhine. A lighthouse was placed on the Oberalp Pass to symbolise it being the source of the Rhine. It is a small replica of the lighthouse located in Rotterdam at the estuary of the Rhine. The sources of the rivers Rhine, Reuss, Rhone and Ticino start in the Gotthard region. The springs are connected by way of the Four Springs’ Trail. www.vier-quellen-weg.ch GURTNELLEN / ARNI The Arni is a perfect starting point for hiking, biking and mountain tours. It takes a few minutes to reach the Arni by cable car from Amsteg or Intschi. The picturesque Lake Arni, surrounded by footpaths and resting places, is an inviting place to linger for a while. Nearby, hidden in the forest, there is a small chapel. Whoever is looking for a place of silence far from everyday life will find here the right place to dream or pause for a moment. WASSEN / MEIEN VALLEY The Meiental (Meien Valley) is a largely untouched, wild and romantic side valley in the upper Reuss valley in the county of Uri. No matter whether you are a hiker, a biker, a climber, a boulderer or are simply looking for peace and quiet, this valley is the perfect place to leave your every- day life behind you. Politically, Meien is part of the muni- cipality of Wassen where the famous «Chileli vo Wasse» and the Antonini quarry are located. URSERN VALLEY The Ursern Valley with the municipalities Andermatt, Hospental and Realp is one of Switzerland’s most impres- sive high valleys. It is said to have already attracted the attention of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who, when travelling through the valley in 1779, declared «of all the places I know, this is the dearest and most interesting to me». The name Ursern comes from the Latin word Ursus, meaning bear. Hence, Urseren means bear valley. The bear is still the heraldic animal of Ursern today.
