TECHNICAL SPEC FOR THE SUPPLY OF DIGITAL DATADigital File required – PDF as per ‘Pass 4 Press’. Flightchecking: Colour: CMYK Acrobat: 3.0 compatible. All fonts embedded. Image resolution minimum 300dpi. Spec can also be downloaded from PPA.co.uk. A contract colour proof must accompany the digital fi le.
NOTE Most content is created in layout applications (e.g. Quark/InDesign) or graphic programs (e.g. illustrator) but problems may occur if these fi les are sent to press because fonts are not embedded, and there may be incompatibility between different software versions. Font legality issues must also be adhered to. The PDF is now accepted as the industry standard for fi le transmission because it handles all the information for high quality imaging. The simplest way to create a PDF fi le is by using the Adobe Acrobat package that included Distiller for converting Postscript to PDF ‘Pass 4 Press’ specifi cation:1 Create page in layout/graphics application. 2 Confi gure the Postscript printer driver. 3 Generate a Postscript fi le with embedded fonts. 4 Convert to a PDF using distiller. 5 Pre-fl ight the PDF. 6 Send.

Dot Gains: +/- 2%, 25% tone - 18%, 50% tone - 18% 75% tone - 11%. NB although these gains have been specified it is preferable to use the cromalin curve already specified. Ink densities - Black 1.6 / Magenta 1.35 / cyan 1.35 / yellow 0.9 all cols +/- 0.05 measured with Gretag
TYPEType reproduced as solid to be no smaller than 5pt all reverse lettering to be no less that 10pt bold avoiding fi ne serifs. Dominant colour for shape, secondary colours spread. Fine type slightly thicken.
TEXTNo live matter within 7mm of trim.
SOLID BLACKSWhere a solid black background is to be created with reverse type a 40% of cyan is recommended to reinforce the solid black printer.
VIEWING CONDITIONSCorrect viewing conditions must be used when viewing proofs and original copy. International standards agree that lighting of 5000 Kelvin should be used.
