The European Landscape

• Quite a number of national investments in the EU member states at the 10 – 50 M€ level. – Europe moves to join the world-wide best efforts: best lasers,

large expertise, big teams with many young students/researchers, new ideas from Europe give the direction.

– E.g. invention of “bubble regime” in Europe:

Pukhov, Alexancer, and Jürgen Meyer-ter-Vehn. "Laser wake field acceleration: the highly non-linear broken-wave regime." Applied Physics B 74.4-5 (2002): 355-361.

EuroNNAc2 Decisions + PlansYearly Meeting 20.3.2014 at DESY

1. The EuroNNAc members’ board unanimously voted on 20th March 2014 to prepare and submit the proposed EU DS (“European Plasma Accelerator with High Beam Quality and Pilot Applications”), as a timely and realistic initiative, responding to the needs in the European field of novel acceleration R&D.

2. The EuroNNAc members’ board decided on 20th March 2014 to present the proposed EU DS to ESGARD (European Steering Group for Accelerator R&D) for obtaining comments and for asking ESGARD support for this proposal. The ESGARD feedback will be distributed and included.

3. The EuroNNAc members’ board authorized the EuroNNAc Steering Committee to take the required further steps. This includes inviting additional beneficiaries, associated partners, industry and users. This also includes adaptation of our proposal to feedback from ESGARD and EU.

4. The EuroNNAc members’ board decided on 20th March 2014 to present three proposals for FET-OPEN calls to ESGARD, as candidates for EuroNNAc supported calls.

5. The EuroNNAc members’ board decided on 20th March 2014 to retain two of the three proposals for submission in the present FET-OPEN call.

6. The EuroNNAc members’ board decided to do the final selection of the 2 FET-OPEN calls at the special EuroNNAc meeting on June 6th at Daresbury, depending on the status of preparation and funding decisions.

Example Acc. Physics Challenge: Correction of Correlated Energy Spread

• Challenge for acc. physicist: build a linac with a phase offset of several 10∘ wrt to the crest and no possibility to switch slope (e.g. always + 30∘).

• In conventional accelerators we know how to manipulate the beam and to counteract: head/tail exchange chicane, dechirpers, high freq. metallic RF, ….

• In addition: inject conventional, ultra-short bunches (< 1fs)!

Result after Ruth, Chen 1986

Every plasma accelerator induces on base principle a correlated energy spread.

Depends on bunch length (short is better).

Must be compensated or corrected for high quality!

Costs money, space, resources EU DS for details

Landscape for anEU DS (I)

• Proposal to take this direction: – Mariano Menna, EU, at EuCARD2 kickoff meeting 2013.

• Success of Novel Accelerator R&D in EU ERC funding 2013: – Two advanced ERC grants on plasma acc. to V. Malka and M.E. Coupries.– One ERC synergy grant (14M€) to R. Assmann, F. Kärtner, P. Fromme, H.

Chapman only accelerator-related grant in this highest category.

• European Strategy for Particle Physics 2013: – “These design studies should be coupled to a vigorous accelerator R&D

programme, including high-field magnets and high-gradient accelerating structures, in collaboration with national institutes, laboratories and universities worldwide.”

– Plasma accelerating structures define the frontier in high gradient acceleration and develop rapidly (see Livingston curve).

R. Assmann, EuroNNAc @ ICAN, 4/2014

Page 19: European Network for Novel Accelerators (EuroNNAc2): WP7

Landscape for anEU DS (II)

• US 2009 "Next-Generation Photon Sources for Grand Challenges in Science and Energy” (p65/66):– Conceptually, the bubble acceleration approach has the potential to enable

accelerator-based short wavelength sources if the persistent problems of electron energy distribution, stability, flux, and reproducibility in the laser acceleration process can be solved.

– The peak brilliance of this new source could be comparable with that of conventional accelerator-based FELs, while the average brilliance still needs substantial progress in pulsed-laser technologies to be considered competitive.

– As with many laser-based sources, the main advantage would not be the replacement of, but rather complementarity with, existing large-scale facilities to benefit a large user community.

Conclusion

• WP7 (EuroNNAc2) is doing well.• Exciting 1st European Advanced Accelerator Concepts

workshop in Elba in 2013 Massimo Ferrario.• Preparing the grand vision for novel accelerators with

applications for science, medicine and society.• Novel accelerators should give us more science for the

money (cost and size) or open new parameters. • Price to pay: Technical complexity and difficulty.• Excellent progress. EuroNNAc2 initiatives for EU design

study and FET proposals. Daresbury meeting: 6.6.2014
