Chamber music as a culture of co-operation

We are delighted to welcome you to Oslo for another ECMA session. Enabling European ensembles and top teachers to come together here at the Norwegian Academy of Music is a highly worthwhile exercise. It makes us part of the incredi-bly rich European tapestry.

Certain fundamental elements need to be in place for a young ensemble to develop. The most important is the focus on music itself and on its qualities as “language”. Throughout his long career, ECMA founder Hatto Beyerle’s big pas-sion has been to promulgate the funda-mentals and linguistic qualities inherent to music.

Another important aspect is the specific skills required for ensemble performance. Without them, the music will not sound right. We are loo-king forward to Johannes Meissl introducing us to the subtle challenges of ensemble performance. Important, too, is developing the chamber musi-cians’ ability to communicate: gaining awareness of psychology, creating a culture of co-operation, establishing how to best complement each other and work together to prepare to achieve on a high level. That is where the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports comes in. For many years, the organisation has helped athletes perform at the very highest level. More recently it has started to provide advice and practice schemes for dancers and musicians, as well. We are proud to be able to present some of their work to our ECMA colleagues.

Artistic director of isa (Inter-national Summer Academy Prague-Vienna-Budapest), he also gives masterclasses at numerous renowned schools and summer academies such as CNSM Paris, Guildhall School of Music and Drama London, Tokyo Geidai and Casals Festival Prades, to name a few.

Hetzel and got strong artistic impulses by Hatto Beyerle. He graduated with distinc-tion and special award. In 1982 he joined the Artis Quartet. As a member of this ensemble he took the opportunity for fur-ther studies with the LaSalle Quartet in the USA. After several prizes at international competitions the quartet became a regu-lar at the world’s most important music

centres and festivals from New York to Tokyo. Numerous prizes for more than 30 recordings (such as Grand Prix du Disque, Diapason d’Or, Deutscher Schallplatten-preis Echo etc.), and the «Artis series» at the Gesellschaft d. Musikfreunde in Vienna, now running its 19th season, also prove the international position of the quartet.

Beside the quartet work J. Meissl appears in recitals and as a soloist and at numerous chamber music festivals.

J. Meissl is co-initiator of numerous inter-national projects in the field of chamber music and shares with Hatto Beyerle the function of artistic director of ECMA.

Having done regular coaching with several orchestras and youth orchestras for many years he has recently sucessfully taken up conducting.

Ralf Gothóni Piano

Ralf Gothóni has a many-sided and world-wide career as pianist, chamber musician, conductor, composer and pedagogue. Gothóni appears regularly both as a soloist and conductor, conducting often from the keyboard. He has premiered more than a dozen piano concertos (Tavener, Sallinen, Rautavaara, Curtis-Smith, Glick, Segerstam etc) and as a conductor he worked a.o. as the principal conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra in 2001-2009 and as the musical director of North-west Chamber Orchestra in Seattle. In 2004 he was appointed as the guest con-ductor of Deutsche Kammerakademie. As chamber musician he performs regularly at the important festivals.

He also gives master classes worldwide and is invited as juror at the major piano competitions.

Mr Gothóni’s repertoire as composer includes a chamber concerto for viola and orchestra, 1 hour chamber cantata for vio-lin, piano and orchestra, 3 chamber operas, chamber music and songs.

In the 80’s, during Gothóni’s artistic di-rectorship, the Savonlinna Opera Festival expanded to its format of today. In the 90-ties he was the initiator and artistic direc-tor of “The Forbidden City Music Festival” in Beijing and since 2007 he has directed “Musical Bridges” between Egypt, Aserbai-jan, Turkey, Jordan and Finland. ECMA - The European Spirit

ECMA has a vision: The “ECMA-spirit,” with its approach to music and music-making, ought to become a “matter of course” for musicians and audiences alike. By constantly re-evaluating the treasures of our cultural heritage and developing new creative potentials in interpretation based on research into the philosophy and musical language of the 17th and 18th centuries, ECMA se-eks to contribute to a society and future that are worth living in.

ECMA was founded in 2004 at the initia-tive of Hatto Beyerle. It is an association of European music universities, con-servatoires and festivals in the field of chamber music that, together, provide ongoing training for chamber music en-sembles. Within this program, the part-ner institutions host regular sessions (lasting one week each; seven or more weeks per year). Renowned tutors work intensively with the ensembles, impar-ting to them new impulses for their artistic work. The young musicians will

receive aditional impulses from lectures and focused workshops on topics inclu-ding cultural history, historically infor-med performance, and philosophy. In addition to helping participants explore the importance and impact of cultural knowledge such as rhetoric and Greek verse in order to gain a more profound understanding of European music, ECMA also collaborates with academic partners on research projects in various fields. And of course, ECMA also works to develop new networks by bringing together people from different back-grounds and cultures.

ECMA – Next Step is an Erasmus+ stra-tegic partnership programme in cham-ber music.
