October is bringing fall colors to the northwest and surely Chadd's Ford, Pennsylvania is ablaze with color now. The juxtaposition of the two regions came together this week with the opening of The Wyeths: Three Generations and Victoria Wyeth's talk on Saturday followed by our council's reception for her. We also had the special pleasure of being introduced to her significant other, William Basciani, who is an artist working in Chadd's Ford. Please keep your calendars up to date with our council activities through December and take a peek at our April surprise. I am looking forward to seeing all of you on the 18th when James D. Burke, noted scholar and director emeritus of the St. Louis Art Museum, will introduce us to the Whistler exhibit. Patty McMahan

UPCOMING DAY TRIP: The Barberini Tapestries

Installation view of The Barberini Tapestries at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine (photo by Allison Meier)

The Barberini Tapestries: Woven Monuments of Baroque Rome are on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum until January 21, 2018, featuring one of the seventeenth century's most renowned series, the Life of Christ which is on loan from the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. This marks the first time the tapestries have traveled outside New York since they came to the United States in 1889. The exhibition comes at a propitious time. In 2001, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine experienced a devastating fire that greatly damaged two of these tapestries. To see the restoration process [click here].

FRANK DUMOND

Prominent painter, teacher and early museum contributor

This is a self-portrait of Frank DuMond (American 1865-1951). He was an illustrator and American Impressionist painter of portraits and landscapes. A prominent teacher, he instructed thousands of art students throughout a career spanning over fifty years at the Art Students League in New York City. In 1894 he married Helen Savier of Portland, Oregon, another artist. He served as director of fine arts at the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland in 1905, and he helped organize the first exhibition at the Portland Art Museum that year in their new building at 5th and Taylor. Here are two photographs of his classes:

On September 21st, President Patty McMahan, opened our first meeting of the 2017-2918 year with a warm welcome to council members, especially, our newest members. The meeting was devoted to a lecture by The Janet and Richard Geary Curator of European Art, Dawson Carr Ph.D., with a focus on royal portraiture. Our newly acquired Infanta Maria Anna by Felipe Diriksen is a wonderful example.

Dawson started his remarks by thanking the council board and members for their generous contributions which enabled us to purchase the significant addition to the European Collection. He told the story of a young princess who eventually would become the Empress of the Holy Roman Empire, and described the world of 17th century monarchs and the portrait painters who captured their images. The lecture provided the historical context for Felipe Diriksen's Infanta Maria Anna, an excellent example of royal portraiture from Spain's Golden Age, and described Diriksen's relationship to the Spanish court and the Infanta Maria Anna. This painting was made shortly before the Infanta's marriage to Ferdinand III of Austria. She became Empress when her husband succeeded his father as Holy Roman Emperor in 1637. At the time of her marriage she was 24 years old and leaving her family in Spain to live in Vienna. Diriksen (1590-1679), the Spanish court painter, was fortuitously given this commission because Diego Velazquez was away completing his studies in Italy. It is a

memento of the lovely princess as she was about to depart, never to return to Spain. Dawson discussed royal portraiture through the lens of other 17th century artists. These included: Diego Velazquez (1599-1660), Alonso Sánchez Coello (1531 - 8 August 1588), and Antonio Moro (c. 1517 - 1577). Diego Velazquez was the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and one of the most important painters of the Spanish Golden Age. He painted the Spanish royal family as well as historical and cultural scenes. For many of us he is the most well-known Spanish painter of this period.
