Newspapers as a source for lifelong learning

Educational role of newspapers is visible in shift from merely ‘bringing’ to ‘explaining’ the news. Newspapers:•… constantly keep us updated about new developments in politics, economics, society etc. •… provide background information, context•… explain the effects of these developments on our lives•… advise citizens about how to exercise their rights

Quotes from teachers in Dutch courses for non-native speakers:

“Newspapers reflect what’s going on in the world: I see that they help my students in forming and articulating their own opinions.”

“When we want to discuss the meaning of new words and analyse texts, we always use the newspaper. This is always a great start for discussions about political and social affairs.”

“We analyse press releases and practice writing them. This gives my students insight in how Dutch media work, and how they can use media themselves.”

“Discussing the news makes my students feel involved in the community they are part of.”
