Eurofighter Typhoon at a glance

"Never has the Royal Air Force had an aircraft with such current or future capability.

It combines an aggressive, penetrating air-to-air platform with a precise, flexible strike capability, able to stand off when necessary and deliver weapons clinically whilst protecting other less capable aircraft.Meteor, Brimstone and Storm Shadow integration over the next couple of years will mean that Typhoon offers the operational commander more flexibility and capability than from any other platform."

Group Captain Jez Attridge, Station Commander at RAF Coningsby, Royal International Air Tattoo, July 2015

The Eurofighter Typhoon consortium brings together the capability in European aerospace in order to create a market leading weapon system.

Eurofighter Typhoon is built on the strength of 4 European nations: UK, Germany, Italy and Spain, and their leading aerospace and defence companies.

This partnership is unrivalled allowing equal access to shared technologies and the creation of long-lasting political and industrial relations.

The programme supports highly-skilled and specialised jobs across Europe.

About the Eurofighter Typhoon consortium

The Eurofighter consortium is based and registered in Munich. Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH is the company that co-ordinates the design, production and upgrade of the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft.

The four partner nations of Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK established the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA) to manage their requirements and act as the primary customer interface with industry. Similarly, the national aerospace companies – Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo) established Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH to act as the primary interface with the customer (NETMA) and coordinate the programme across industry

EUROJET, comprising Rolls-Royce (RR), MTU Aero Engines, Avio and Industria de Turbo Propulsores (ITP), is the industrial consortium responsible for management of the development, production, maintenance and sales of the EJ200 engine.

Economic Return for BelgiumFor Eurofighter Typhoon, economic return is part of our DNA.

In addition to the 100,000 highly skilled European-based jobs across 400 companies which the programme has supported, technology and IPR has been shared across borders and freely accessed by all those involved in the programme.

It is this proven approach to collaboration in research, design, development and manufacturing which exists within the Eurofighter Industrial Consortium and from which Belgian industry could benefit by becoming a fully-fledged partner.

The backbone of the Consortium is the three Eurofighter Partner Companies - Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo - whose combined turnover exceeds €100bn. These companies underpin Eurofighter’s unparalleled combination of industrial capability, experience and credibility.

Another integral component is the supply chain partners - 100 Tier 1 equipment suppliers and 300 Tier 2 product suppliers - who provide an unequalled breadth and depth of technology capability.

The Eurofighter Industrial Consortium will draw upon its extensive capabilities to promote a range of activities from which Belgian industry and its institutions have the opportunity to leverage substantial long term economic returns.

In addition to the existing range of Belgian companies who are already part of the Eurofighter Typhoon supply chain, members of the Eurofighter Industrial Consortium are currently actively engaged with over 100 different Belgian companies within the defence, aerospace and space sectors - a substantial established footprint on which to develop further beneficial economic return relationships.

One significant example is Airbus, which currently places annual contracts with Belgian companies to the value of €500m, a figure expected to rise to more than €600m by the end of 2020, providing a solid basis on which to leverage further economic return activity.

Being a partner in the Eurofighter Typhoon programme would allow the Belgian Government access to the four Nation NETMA partnership.

Belgian industry would have a unique opportunity to fully engage in the Eurofighter’s future development and product enhancements, aimed at keeping the weapon system at the leading edge of technical capability.

As a truly European product, the involvement of Belgian industry in the Eurofighter Typhoon programme would not only further strengthen Europe’s most successful defence programme, but would reinforce the critical mass of technology capability and high quality sustainable employment associated with such a programme.

Media Guide 9

“From the very first second I sat in the Typhoon and went flying in it, you knew it was a world-beater- and that is because of the raw performance and the power that aeroplane has.

“The fact we are continuing to improve the capability across the board – and it not just weapons, it is radar performance, it is infra-red search and track, the Helmet-Mounted Sighting System- all of those things means it is a fantastic platform.”

RAF Lossiemouth Station Commander Paul Godfrey

“We learned (from Baltic Air Policing) that our platform is capable of operating pretty much in every weather condition possible, and we learned that we can deploy pretty much all over the world.

“We learned a lot about the reliability of Typhoon during the Baltic Air Policing mission that Italy led from January to September 2015, when we had 48 scrambles and didn’t miss a single one.”

Italian Air Force Col. Marco Bertoli

“It is truly gobsmacking to fly. On the performance tests where we take the performance of the aircraft to the max, I still have those moments where I’m saying to myself ‘I can’t believe I have this job’. It’s like riding a huge ball of almost unlimited energy. The power is just unbelievable.”

Steve Formoso, Chief Test Pilot, BAE Systems

“The best word to describe it is worship. The unfortunate fighter pilots who don’t fly it still admire and respect it deeply, even though they might still fly incredible machines. It never fails to astonish those who have never operated alongside it.

“The Eurofighter was designed, and all its upgrades have been developed for the same principle, to operate alongside other NATO members.”

Spanish Air Force Captain Joaquin Ducay De La Riva

“1(F) Squadron from RAF Lossiemouth integrated with our US allies on Operation Red Flag in 2015, the premier high-end war fighting event in the world: Typhoon became the platform of choice for the package commander. It combined an aggressive, penetrating air-to-air platform with a precise, flexible strike capability, able to stand off when necessary and deliver weapons clinically whilst protecting other less capable aircraft.”

RAF Coningsby Station Commander Jez Attridge

“The performance, the agility of the aircraft – it has got a large delta wing and two immensely powerful engines and a flying control system which is almost intuitive to fly – means I don’t have to think about the inputs, I request something from the aircraft and it gives me exactly what I want.”

“Typhoon is operating at a multi-role level without any question. The upcoming enhancements of Meteor, Brimstone and Storm Shadow are going to take it to the stage where this is a pure multi-role, multi-task, swing-role aircraft that can continue to be employed as the backbone of the RAF.”

RAF Flight Lieutenant Mark Long

“We are fortunate enough to be operating the latest version of the Typhoon called P1EB (Phase 1 Enhancement Bravo).”

“It’s pretty much unbeatable. If we’re in a scramble we can get airborne very quickly. The Typhoon has the power to get up to height and speed rapidly, this is far superior to anything we are used to.”

RAF Flight Lieutenant Oli Fleming

Advanced evolving multi-role capability

The Typhoon enjoys a continuous capability upgrade programme. The latest Phase 1 Enhancement (P1E) package came into operational service last year, further increasing the effectiveness of the aircraft and enabling simultaneous air-to-air and air-to-surface operations.

The Phase 2 Enhancement (P2E) package will introduce a range of new and improved long-range attack capabilities with the introduction of the Storm Shadow and Meteor weapons. This will be followed by the Phase 3 Enhancement (P3E) package, with the Dual Mode Brimstone weapon providing low collateral precision attack on moving targets.

The Phased Enhancement route map is underpinned by the development of an Advanced Electronically Scanned Array Radar, ready for operations from 2020.

The Eurofighter support and training systems will continue to endure in parallel with the aircraft systems to support the aircraft’s enhanced capability and to optimize life cycle costs.
