The UK is a powerhouse in research and innovation, promoting excellence

in science, technology and innovation

In 2014, the UK represented just 0.9% of global population, 2.7% of R&D

expenditure, and 4.1 % of researchers, while accounting for 9.9% of

downloads, 10.7% of citations and 15.2% of the world’s most highly-cited

articles.

UK is home to four of the world’s top ten universities (Cambridge, Oxford,

UCL and Imperial).

The UK research base is well-rounded and demonstrates excellence in

diverse research fields, with activity (as indicated by article outputs) across

all major research fields. Its field-weighted citation impact is well above the

world average and it continues to rank first amongst comparator countries.

The UK is a key partner for global research collaboration and researcher

mobility with 5.3% of all publications resulting from international

collaborations.

The UK is rated one of the most innovative countries in the world – ranked

5th in the Global Innovation Index.

The Newton-Ungku Omar Fund is a science and innovation partnership

fund between UK and Malaysia

Newton Fund in Malaysia

• Established as part of the UK’s Official Development

Assistance (ODA) budget, through UK’s commitment to

spend 0.7% of Gross National Income on International

Development.

• MoU was signed in 2014 between both countries’

Government Science Advisors, with a UK Government

commitment of up to £35 mil until 2021 matched by

monetary and in-kind support from the Malaysian

government.

• Anchored on climate change and sustainability, NUOF

projects are designed and delivered in partnership by

Delivery Partners from UK and Malaysia.

The Newton Fund has 17 partner countries

worldwide, 5 of which are in SEA

OBJECTIVES1. Identified UK experts to support capacity building for Malaysia’s early

career researchers and budding innovators in terms of effective proposal/idea development and entrepreneurial skills to tackle plastic challenge.

2. Establish platform for researchers and innovators to learn the intensity of global and regional plastics waste issues as well as mitigation efforts implemented locally and internationally.

3. Enable researchers and innovators to connect and identify opportunities to establish innovation partnership in a multi-disciplinary and circular economy approach to address existing challenges in eliminating single use plastics and plastic waste management.

4. Introduction to UK’s Marine Plastic Research and innovation framework and identify Malaysia’s potential and opportunity for participation.
