    Grassroots Democracy: Empowerment of NeighborhoodAssemblies: People meeting face-to-faceare best equipped to make decisionsregarding their community. Decisionmaking needs to be taken out of thehands of bureaucrats, developers, andprofessional planners. We should endb a c k r o o m d e a l s ,^Election of Major Commissions:End the undemocratic process of majorcommissions (Planning, Police, etc.) beingappointed by the City Council. Let thepeople decide in ward-by-ward electionso f c o m m i s s i o n e r s .

    H o m e R u l e : C o m m u n i t i e s s h o u l d b eempowered to change their charters without an OK from Montpellier.Ecology and Growth:^Moratorium on luxury growth:Burlington has experienced too muchluxury growth. Thecommunity and the environment are suffering.Let the community decidehow it can develop alongecological and humani s t i c l i n e s .

    Protect Open Spaces:Burlington needs awaterfront that is openand accessible to everyone, not just the rich.Consequently, we shouldr e z o n e t h e e n t i r e w a t e rfront to assure no further for-profit development. We should also protect the Intervale from non-agricultural development,^Ecological Transportation: Burlington is choking with too many automob i les . The answer is no t to bu i ld moreroads, but to support efficient, comfortable public transportation. We shouldoppose the widening of Main St, and thebuilding of the Southern Connector.

    ^Alternative Energy: Encourageefficiency and alternative forms ofenergy. We should reject power fromHydro-Quebec.Neighborhoods andHous ing :^Rent stabilization; Rents havetripled in Burlington in the last 10years, forcing low income people out ofBurlington or into homelessness. Ac i t i z e n c o n t r o l l e d b o a r d w o u l d s t a b i l i z erents by determining whether increases are appropriate.^Expansion of Land Trust: TheLand Trust, which keeps houses out ofthe speculative real estate market, is avaluable program aimed at makingh o u s e s a f f o r d a b l e . L a n d T r u s t s s h o u l dbe supported and expanded.I n d i v i d u a l L i b e r t i e s : Sexuality andReproduct ion: Wes h o u l d e x t e n d

    people s rights tocontrol their reprod u c t i v e a n d s e x u a ll i v e s . A b o r t i o n s h o u l dremain legal andaccessible. Gays,l e s b i a n s a n d b i s e x u -a l s s h o u l d b e a s s u r e dfull civil rights. Decriminalizationof Drugs: We shouldlet people make their own decisions

    about their private lives. We shoulddemand that the federal governmentend seizures of property immediately.Support community run programs tod e a l w i t h s u b s t a n c e a b u s e .^Support the Bill of Rights: Wes h o u l d e n d a s s a u l t s o n c r e a t i v e a n dpolitical expression. Protect dissent intimes of peace and war.
