The Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

A key word from today’s readings is “understanding” or “knowledge.” In answer to God’s offering of a gift to Solomon, he responds “not knowing at all how to go out or come in”. This reply is a Hebrew wording to assert all that a man can do. Jesus’ method of teaching is to use parables. Parables use that which is known in a symbolic way to express to express or explain that which is unknown by comparing it to that which is commonly known. The Books of Kings retell Israel’s existence in their Promised Land from Joshua to the exile in Babylon. The Books of Kings retell Israel’s existence in their Promised Land from Joshua to the exile in Babylon. The Books offer a consistent theological point of view. Political and social history are less important than explaining the tragic fate of God’s chosen people’ The reading today from the Old Testament comes from an instance with the much heralded King Solomon. Revelation in dreams is a frequent occurrence in both Testaments. It is a means of God speaking or messaging His people. Here Solomon’s answer to God’s gift is a statement of one who wants to lead with justice and judicial wisdom. His desire is to possess an ability to judge with justice when cases require him to be a supreme arbiter of justice and equality in his kingdom. He wants a “heart” for his judging responsibilities. “Heart” in Hebrew generally connotes intellectual not emotional ability. Because his request is selfless, God grants it. God sees his true heart to service for the good of the people land not for self-aggrandizement. In the verses that follow today’s reading, God rewards Solomon’s unselfish request and grants him two things he has not asked for. On the condition that he follow the faithful model of his father King David, God rewards him with the things that most kings desire with kingship. God tenders riches and honor beyond all other kinds including a long successful and memorable life. Today the Gospel from Matthew completes Jesus’ telling of parables with the stories of hidden treasure, a pearl, and a net. In these stories Jesus compares desirable occurrences that being monetary joy to the individual with the eternal joy of being called to the Kingdom of Heaven. In each instance, Jesus expounds on unexpected worldly gain be acquired by hope. Buried treasure is the hope of finding the desirable after the danger of invasion or plundering the land of the conquered has passed. The riches may be recovered by an unknowing person whose want for gaining “found wealth” is an example of the zeal which a believer in God shall attain as he pursues eternal life. The pearl merchant acts the same. He puts all his ownership into one investment that he hopes will repay him the most. Again this behavior with the pearl shall be the same for one who aspires entrance to eternity by investing his religious behavior toward that end. The final parable resembles the weeds and wheat story which was heard last week for the Universal Church has both faithful and unfaithful members. God tolerates such members. Judgment shall determine the destiny of the righteous and wicked much like the coexistence of the wheat and the weeds. Understanding is putting knowledge to work. Solomon wants knowledge to understand human behavior in

formulating judgments. Jesus provides knowledge that His disciples can use to make their teaching understood, just as He has done for them. By using His model can they expand His

Church that He has come to build.

PARISH UPDATE

A total of 165 people attended our three “Sunday Masses” last weekend, up four from the previous week. The individual

Mass counts were 5:00 pm (65), 9:00 am (65), 11:30 am (35). Looking ahead to September, it is likely that the 11:30 am

Mass will move back to 11:00 am because the sanitization/ cleaning between Masses is taking less time than expected.

PRAYING THE ROSARY aloud, star ting 30 minutes before Masses, has resumed. The spir itual benefits of this far outweighs any added Coronavirus risk that is minimized by the participants wearing face masks and keeping safe distances. Let’s place ourselves under Mary’s protection and ask Our Lady to intercede with her Son for a swift end to the pandemic. ROUTINE PASTORAL VISITS TO THE HOMEBOUND and to persons in care facilities is still not permitted under Diocesan guidelines for the pandemic. However, upon request, Fr. John will readily visit anyone who feels a need for the sacraments. Just call the parish office. THANK YOU FOR YOUR VERY GENEROUS ON-GOING WEEKLY SUPPORT of St. Flor ian Par ish during

the COVID-19 restrictions. May Our Lord continue to bless you and your families and our Parish Family as well!

Read Fr. John’s Homily at www.saintflorian.org under the “Parish Life” tab.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION during the night hours br ings special graces .Consider these

words of Jesus spoken by way of locution to a Benedictine monk: “There are particular graces re-

served for souls who keep watch before My Eucharistic Face during the night. Those who pray by

night imitate My own watches of prayer to My Father….You will discover that there is a clarity and

a peace in nocturnal prayer…. Those who have discovered this return to me by night and seek to re-

main close to My Eucharistic Heart….They will lose nothing of their repose, for I will be their re-

freshment and their rest.” (In Sinu Jesu p. 41) For July 14-15, the following hours had only one

adorer: 9 am, 11 am, 9 pm, 1 am, 2 am, and 3 am. At least two adorers should be present for

each hour. Thank you.
