Description/Program: Lecture on World Bank’s role, priorities and programs in international development amid the changing landscape of the global economy

Title of the Activity: Open Lecture “The EU in the World and EU-Japan Relations”


Purpose of the Activity: As part of continuing lectures connected to Professor Takako Ueta's “Politics and International Relations in Europe” course.

Description/Program:

Ambassador Schweisgut spoke about overcoming the EU financial crisis, discussions about European integration, and policy on foreign relations and security. Additionally, with regard to Japanese relations, he spoke about the free trade agreement, for which negotiations are expected to begin this spring, and expectations for cooperative frameworks, including intergovernmental cooperation.

Title of the Activity: Open Lecture “Franco-German Reconciliation and its Importance in the Construction of Europe”


Purpose of the Activity: In connection with Professor Takako Ueta’s course on “International History.”

Description/Program: Lecture on speaker’s views on European relations and future from the standpoint of past Franco-German relations



Dr. Joerg Wolff, Representative of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in Japan



Results:

Nearly eighty students and some faculty listened to the Dr. Wolff with great interest. After concluding his talk, several students had questions, to which the ambassador gave careful attention in answering in detail.

Purpose of the Activity: As part of part of continuing lectures connected to Professor Takako Ueta's “Politics and International Relations in Europe” course.

Description/Program: As renowned specialist in financial issues, speaker presented straightforward discussion of various

issues surrounding the euro crisis.

Title of the Activity: Open Lecture “Finland in relation with EU and Russia”


Purpose of the Activity: In connection with Professor Takako Ueta’s course on “International History.”


After first showing a short film introducing Finland, the ambassador began his congenial talk focusing largely on geopolitical conditions, in particular the handling of relations with its largest neighbor during World War Two and the cold war, the Soviet Union, and the importance of engaging models and systems. Today, the majority of tourists to Finland come from Russia. The ambassador explained that since the cold war Finland has become a true member of the European community, joining the EU in 1995, and receiving broad safeguards for security, access to Europe’s vast marketplace, and benefits for freedom of movement for the Finnish people.

Results:

Nearly one hundred students attended the lecture. Some time was reserved at the end for questions and it was possible to have deeper interaction between exchange students from Finland’s University of Tampere, with whom ICU has a cooperative agreement, and students to Tampere from ICU.
