Several associations of private schools in the country have been resist- ing the landmark legislation that makes it mandatory for private schools to admit a certain number of students from economically backward sections of society, free of cost. The Act also lays down minimum standards for ele- mentary education. As expected, private school associ- ations have objected to the findings of the study. The study surveyed 34,756 private schools in 69 districts across eight states. It was expressly commis- sioned to verify if private schools were shutting down due to RTE’s stringent norms, and causing hardship to chil- dren, as claimed. The study concluded that only five private schools were found closed - 4 in Yadgir district of Karnataka and one in Bageshwar in Uttarakhand. More- over, it could not be established that RTE was the reason for the closures.
