– Netiquette (NETwork etIQUETTE) is a set of social conventions that facilitate interaction over networks, ranging from email and instant messaging to blogs and forums.

Basic Email Etiquette
• Basic Email Etiquette – Begin each e-mail with a greeting – Identify yourself – Include subject line which reflects the content – Be clear and concise – Choose words and typestyles thoughtfully
• Bold or ALL CAPS looks like shouting (called flames)
• Large font and font colors are difficult to read • Be careful with words that can stereotype

• Be Professional – Be professional when writing e-mail
• No abbreviations • Use emoticons sparingly
– They are often misunderstood and relay vague ideas
– It’s better to find clear words for your thoughts
• Address people you don't know as Mr., Mrs., or Ms.
– Use proper business English, especially if you are writing to a businessperson
– Remain polite – Use please and thank you – Never use offensive language

• Spelling and Grammar – Use Correct Spelling
• Use a dictionary or a spell checker • When in doubt, spell it out!
– Use Proper Grammar • You can write in a conversational tone • Pay attention to basic rules of grammar

• Watch Your Tone – If your message is designed to vent strong
feelings • write it, but do not send it until you have
slept on it overnight. • It is interesting how different your words look
in the light of day! – If your words appear to be rude, you could start a
“flame war”

• Forwarding Email – Do not forward bogus information
• Search the topic in these to make sure it’s not a hoax – Snopes.com – TruthOrFiction.com
– Without thinking you can expose your friends’ email address to total strangers • Remove email addresses at top before

• Attachments – Ask before you send an attachment to someone – Many people won’t open attachments
• Because of computer viruses • Viruses can even come disguised in email
messages from someone you know

• Minimize Photos – Picture Pixel Size
• Right off camera photos are 1,000 pixels or greater
• Minimize them to no larger than 600 pixels to make them emailable
– Reasons why you should not send large files • Takes a long time to download • Not respecting recipient’s time • May even max out their email box

• Is Electronic Mail Private?– Anything you write online can be (and may be)
forwarded to others – Do not disclose trade secrets or company-
confidential information – Never send the following over email:
• Usernames and passwords • Credit card or other account information • Sensitive information

• Misc. – Delete old e-mail messages; they take up valuable
storage space – Don’t contribute to litter on the Information
Superhighway – Do not forward chain e-mails to others

Task 1
• Do you think you can recognize violations of Netiquette rules? • Use the Ten Rules of Netiquette to help you with this
assignment. • Apply what you’ve learned to the situations listed in the
Netiquette Scenarios Worksheet. • Read each scenario carefully then list the Netiquette rule(s) that
were most accurately violated for each scenario. – (Just list the number or numbers of the rules (i.e. 3, 5, 7,
etc.)• Save this in your Unit 2 Folder on your F Drive as 2.01

Task 2• Send an email to me inquiring about your grade.
– Open Word and click on the Microsoft Office Button (Top Left).– Then Click on Send.– Then Click on E-mail.– Click on From– Click on Show From
• Here are the rules you must follow: – Include a Subject Line which reflects the content (2.01 E-mail)– Include a greeting such as “Mrs. Doe” (Mr. Mickens)– Be clear and concise (not too wordy) (What is my grade?)– Use a standard font such as Times New Roman 11 (no fancy or large fonts) – Use proper business English — no abbreviations or emoticons – Spellcheck and proofread – Take a screenshot of this and paste it into a Word document.
Save it as 2.01 E-mail in your Unit 2 Folder on your F Drive.– You should now have 4 things saved on your F Drive in your Unit
