Earth Day: Eastern Blue Bird Box Installation (2012)

With guidance from the Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA), associates recently installed ten nest boxes in an open meadow on the campus. The group assembled the nest boxes a few months ago and then, to celebrate Earth Day last month, they spent one morning setting them up. Associates will monitor the nest boxes throughout the rest of the spring and the summer. Bluebirds will likely make nests in the boxes later this month, and they could have as many as three broods during summer. The efforts of associates will help ensure a promising future for the local population of bluebirds!

HONEYBEES The newest residents at Ethicon

Somerville are Honeybees!

"Honeybees rarely sting except by

accident or in defense of a beehive,

because use of its stinger is lethal to

a honeybee.“

Please observe the Apiary from

inside the bridge from F-wing to M-

wing, do not go out into courtyard.

Stay tuned for information on the

honeybees and Honeybee Lunch &

Learn and how you can buy some

HONEYBEE- SAFETY

Honey bees fly at high level, above buildings not at people level. These

are not the bees who want your soda or food!

The only way the honeybee will bother a person is if you get in the way

of their flight path from their hive.

Bees don’t want to sting us, Bees’ first instinct is to fly away if they get

scared, much as we would run away from something that scares us.

Next they would buzz you if you get too close to them.

The female would sting you if they felt the threat was large enough. For

example if you disturb the hive.

These bees will not live anywhere else except their hive, so they will not

build nests elsewhere in the surrounding buildings on campus.

Any questions about the Honey Bees please

contact Leonora Persico in EHS.
