Box 3535 Lisle, IL 60532 Dear BRIDGE Editors, On behalf of the Mu Chapter of the Eta Kappa Nu Association at the University of California, Berkeley, we proudly submit the attached report of our chapter's activities and accomplishments during the 2006-2007 school year. Our chapter is among the most active groups on Berkeley’s 33,000-student campus. In addition to maintaining the numerous services that our chapter has tra-ditionally provided, such as daily tutoring, exam files, and course surveys, we also continually strive to expand the range of activities and services we’re involved in. This past year, we have worked specifically on a few things in order to further improve our chapter. One of the goals of this year was to improve member participation. The Publicity Committee worked hard to attract more members to the events with increased publicity. Members joined the Tutoring Committee to help improve our services by providing increased tutoring coverage. Even the Bridge Committee gained a few members to help with the photography and video capturing. We also worked to expand the services that HKN provides for the EECS community. The Tutor-ing Committee worked hard to provide more review sessions, while the Industrial Relations Com-mittee worked hard to strength our industrial ties. For your convenience, we have presented our activities in four categories:

    • “Service” — covering our activities to benefit the general student body, our department and college, and the surrounding community.

    • “Outreach” — covering our efforts to connect with groups with whom we can interact and

from whom we may learn: our alumni, other HKN chapters, other Berkeley engineering societies, and industry.

    • “Social” — covering social mixers and athletic events held to maintain chapter morale and

help Mu Chapter members, candidates, and officers bond while taking a break from their studies.

    • “Official Business” — the standard events and ceremonies needed to run and perpetuate

    the chapter.

  • For an overview of all our activities, you may skim the first page of each section, or you may read the report in its entirety for a more thorough description of each event. A calendar of our events from the past year is provided in the back for your reference. Mu Chapter cordially invites you to take a look into our chapter through this report, in the hope that you may understand why our chapter is so well-respected in our department, why our members are dedicated to keeping the chapter so active, and why we continue to grow every year. Sincerely, The Mu Chapter Bridge Committee Shah Bawany Edward Chen Arpad Kovacs Jerry Zhang

During the past year, the Mu Chap-ter continued to uphold and en-hance its outstanding record of ser-vice to students, faculty, and the sur-rounding community. We improved traditional student services such as free tutoring, re-view sessions, and exam archives that are key components of the Mu Chapter's commitment to serving the EECS student body. The Mu Chapter also supported the depart-ment faculty by organizing an event to connect undergraduate students with faculty involved in research, ad-ministering course surveys on be-half of the department, as well as showing appreciation for our pro-fessors and staff through our tradi-tional semi-annual bakeoff. Finally, the Mu Chapter strived to make a difference in the Bay Area by pro-viding assistance to volunteer or-ganizations and participating in community service.

San Francisco Zoo Cleanup The Mu Chapter participated in two very successful and productive "Renew the Zoo" community service events at the San Francisco Zoo this year. During these events, enthusiastic HKN officers and candi-dates volunteered to trim and remove weeds, as well as clean out accumulated dirt and debris from an irri-gation channel to prepare for the opening of a new wildlife exhibit.

Through efficient organization and effective team-work, we completed the tasks ahead of schedule and were rewarded with delicious complementary lunch as well as free rides on zoo attractions.

Uhuru Holiday Pies This year, the Mu Chapter extended its volunteer ser-vices towards helping unfortunate people located not only in the Bay Area, but also those in poverty around the world. We joined the Uhuru Holiday Pies organization in their mission of raising money to provide Africans with education and legal defense by assisting in one of their fundraising activities.

Mu Chapter members generously gave their time to help package pies as well as clean up the Uhuru Holi-day Pies bakery's kitchen.

Officers and candidates work together to clean up the zoo.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer The Mu Chapter participated in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, which is an awareness and fundraising event organized by the American Cancer Society. A group of our volunteers spent a nice morning at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Volunteers did various tasks including col-lecting cones, loading food into trucks, and putting away tables. It was a good event for a good cause, and everyone went away feeling just a bit warmer in their hearts that day.

Donut Runs HKN Student Relations department continued its tradition of helping out fellow students by partaking in a donut run for the starved and overworked students in the Cory and Soda labs. Warm fresh Krispy Kreme donuts and ice-cold milk were provided for students in CS61C, CS150, and EE192 to make another night in the lab a little more pleas-ant.

A team of our volunteers helps move a table while cleaning up after the event.

Staff Appreciation Bake-off In order to express our appreciation towards the out-standing staff of the EECS department, the Mu Chapter has a tradition of baking cookies, brownies, muffins, and cake every semester as a small token of gratitude and to show their appreciation for the EECS staff.

This year was no exception, and our dedicated candi-dates and officers whipped up some very tasty appre-ciation indeed.

Faces of Research The Mu Chapter helped maintain UC Berkeley’s status as one of the nation’s premier research institutions by inviting professors to describe their projects to undergraduates interested in participating in research. Some of the participating professors included Dan Garcia, Rastislav Bodik, and Laurent El Ghaoui. They discussed the many opportunities for EECS under-graduates to get involved with research in areas such as game algorithms, signal processing, and compilers. Overall, the event was a great success as a wide array of professors presented their work on the stage and captivated the audience. Chinese food was served after the event, as students and professors discussed common research interests.

Student Services The Mu Chapter provides a wide range of services to the entire EECS student body: Tutoring: Our officers offer customized one-on-one tutoring for all EECS and technical classes for free at two locations for six hours per day, five days a week. Many students come to our "office hours" for explanations of new concepts, guidance on completing assignments and projects, as well as preparation for examinations from our friendly and approachable officers.

Review Sessions: Our tutoring committee also ar-ranges comprehensive review sessions to help stu-dents prepare for examinations in lower-division EECS classes.

Exam Files: At the end of each semester, we convert examinations from al-most every EECS course into PDF files. As a result, the hkn.berkeley.edu web-site contains a large archive of actual examinations with solutions from previous semesters that students can take advantage of while studying.

Darren, the Mu Chapter Tutoring offi-cer, explains a problem to a group of students preparing for a midterm.

HKN Exam Files As part of the candidate requirements, each candidate is supposed to digitize one exam and submit another exam for the Exam Files Com-mittee to digitize. As a result, we have a large collection of midterms and finals on our exam files collection, some which even have solutions to them. This is quite useful for students to have additional practice ma-terial.

Student Services The Mu Chapter assists EECS students in deciding which classes to take through peer advising sessions or through the ratings of professors on the online course survey:

Peer Advising Sessions: This year we began to of-fer peer advising sessions sponsored by the Depart-ment of Engineering to assist students who are de-ciding which courses to take in the future. Our know-ledgable officers not only inform students of EECS Department course requirements and prerequisites, but also provide valuable information about profes-sors and insightful commentary on the subject mate-rial.

Course Surveys: At the end of each semester, candidates from the Mu Chapter administer voluntary course surveys in almost every EECS course on behalf of the EECS department, in order to provide professors feedback about the effectiveness of their teaching. The Mu Chapter posts the results of these surveys on our website as a service for students, who can compare different professors teaching a particular course through a variety of metrics.

Students offer each other advice on classes to take during a peer advising session.

Did you know? Many students browse our online course surveys to help them pick courses for the next semester. The course survey system displays the following information: • The rating of the professor for that class. • The rating of the class and the course material. • The difficulty of the professor and the class.

Mu Chapter continues to build its reputation among the campus com-munity by co-hosting career fairs and infosessions. Organized by the Industrial Relations Committee with the help of many members and can-didates, the events draw hundreds of students from a wide variety of majors. The events also help form long-lasting relationships with in-dustry representatives. Many events also reach out to alumni to ensure continued involve-ment even after graduation. Mu Chapter holds Alumni Appreciation Dinners and Alumni Broomball games each semester to reunite doz-ens of former officers and mem-bers. Intersociety events such as Engi-neering Sports Night, Pi Night and Ultimate Frisbee create ties between Mu Chapter and other student or-ganizations on campus.

Alumni Appreciation Dinner Alumni appreciation dinners are an excellent way for Mu Chapter alumni to remain in contact with each other and for current members and officers to forge new bonds with alumni. Typically held at a different restaurant at the start of each semester, the dinners are attended by graduates of Mu Chapter spanning over an entire decade.

Last fall semester, Alumni Appreciation Dinner was held at Chevy's in Emery-ville and the turnout was impressive. This past spring the event was hosted at Little Hong Kong restaurant, where alumni and current Mu Chapter members and officers dined together family style.

Alumni Broomball Alumni, officers, members and candidates face off at a game of broomball. The sport is similar to hockey, but uses broom-like sticks and a ball instead of a puck. Held at the Oakland Ice Center, the event pit-ted alumni and candidates on a team against current officers and members. Broomball provides excellent physical activity and is a good opportunity for past, present and future Mu Chapter members to meet. Last fall, the alumni and candidates won with a score of 2-0. This continued a long-running streak of the alumni/candidate team winning all games in recent history. Regardless of the score, the event proved to be one of the highlights of the semester.

HKN alumni, candidates, members, and officers pose in front of Little Hong Kong for a group picture.

Mass confusion ensues as everyone congre-gates around the goal to gain control of the ball.

Broomball with UPE While alumni broomball divides Mu Chapter into teams to face off against each other, members, offi-cers, candidates and alumni join forces when HKN plays Upsilon Pi Epsilon (the computer science honor society) at a game of broomball. This past spring, Mu Chapter maintained its winning streak with a 9-3 victory over UPE. Although the event brought out a lot of competitive spirit, it ultimately helped strengthen the ties between two honor socie-ties.

Pi Night with TBP and AWE March 14th marks Pi Day, and last spring Mu Chap-ter celebrated the occasion with the Tau Beta Pi En-gineering Honor Society (TBP) and the Association of Women in EECS (AWE). The social event con-sisted of baking and eating pies, a contest to recite the most digits of pi, and all other things related to pi.

Ultimate Frisbee with TBP As with most other inter-society events, Ultimate Frisbee with TBP pitted a team composed of Mu Chapter members, candidates and officers against TBP. Despite the friendly rivalry between HKN and TBP, the game is a good opportunity for members of the two societies to get to know one another and strengthen our ties and allow better collaboration on joint efforts such as sports night.

Mu Chapter and UPE members gather for a group photo on the ice at the conclu-sion of the event.

Engineering Sports Night As part of a collaborative effort with Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society (TBP), Mu Chapter hosted an Engineering Sports Night aimed to get engineers on campus to come out and play some football, ultimate frisbee, dodgeball, and soccer. The wide variety of sports drew in many students from other societies and allowed Mu Chapter to get to know some of the other engineering student groups on campus.

Capture the Flag with TBP Mu Chapter faced off against TBP in a heated game of Capture the Flag. Members, officers and candi-dates showed true dedication by showing up despite poor weather conditions. Wet grass and a slippery Frisbee combined to make the game even more chal-lenging. In the end, the score remained tied at 1-1 and it was decided that the true champions of CTF would have to be declared at a later date.

Infosessions To further connect the EECS student body with industry, Mu Chapter holds numerous infosessions throughout the semester, where recruiters from compa-nies visit UC Berkeley to talk about their company and any job opportunites that may be available. Here is just a small sample of the infosessions we have held:

AMD Infosession: AMD representatives presented some of the exciting aspects of a career at one of the largest chip manufacturers. Attendees had many questions regarding upcoming product releases and the future of processor design. The event had a large turnout, drawing both EE and CS students. At the conclusion of the presentation, several lucky students took home various prizes such an AMD processor from the raffle.

Loopt Infosession: Employees from the startup company Loopt talked about what it's like to work for a small and rapidly growing company. Many stu-dents attended to find out more about the company and the mobile phone geographical networking ser-vices it provides.

Amazon Infosession: Current employees discussed their roles at Amazon and what they enjoy about their jobs. The infosession targeted students looking for internship or full-time opportunities at the online retail company. Nearly 60 students attended the event to learn more about job opportunities and to gain a chance at winning the Amazon gift certificate that was raffled off at the end of the infosession.

AMD representatives hand out ATI posters in light of their recent acquisition of the company.

Students gather around a Loopt Software Developer to ask questions.

7th Annual EECS Career Fair Each fall semester, Mu Chapter works with the cam-pus Career Center to hold a Career Fair for students looking for full time jobs in industry. The event draws many companies and helps hundreds of stu-dents secure jobs following graduation. Of all the events that Mu Chapter holds for the EECS student community, this is one of the largest and most chal-lenging to run. With the help of many Mu Chapter officers and members, our Industrial Relations Com-mittee successfully organized the event and effec-tively communicated with industry representatives. The turnout at the career fair is indicative of the reputation that HKN has among students on campus as well as companies in industry. In addition to help-ing out the student community, the event provides additional funding necessary for the candidate semes-ter that follows.

Dozens of companies set up booths with informative pamphlets, applications and free t-shirts, pens, hats and toys.

The facilitator behind the close con-nections formed in Mu Chapter, our social events allow our various members, officers, and candidates to gather together in a relaxed social atmosphere. Despite the challenges in pursing a demanding major, our members nevertheless make an effort to gather outside the classroom, allow-ing many new friendships to form. Organized by officers and brought alive by members and candidates, these events have greatly strength-ened the bonds within Mu Chapter HKN.

Potlucks and Barbeques Who says engineers can't cook? Every semester, our members gather together to enjoy a nice meal whipped up by their fellow HKNers. Charged with bringing the chow, our more culinary elite officers dazzle and shine with dishes such as homemade mo-chi while our more culinary challenged officers stick to the Costco bag of chicken nuggets. Needless to say, there are always at least three selections of pasta, a Mu chapter favorite.

On good days, HKN officers also bring out the bar-beque grill. Many stand aside and watch as the culi-nary masters of HKN grill burgers and hot dogs for the masses to eat.

However, eating isn't all we do. In addition to sev-eral musical performances, one of our spring semester candidates wowed the at-tendees with a presentation on solving a 4-D Rubik's Cube.

Albert Liu and Michelle Au wow officers and candidates with their musical talent.

Members and candidates gather around the table to devour the food that each officer carefully made.

Ice Cream Socials It’s never too cold to have ice cream, as is evident from the throng of HKNers gathered at our ice cream socials. One of our more popular events, ice cream socials allow members to come out and simply “chill” after a busy day of classes. This year, some of our favorite flavors include Chunky Monkey from Ben and Jerry's, Crème Caramel from Gelato Milano, and Belgian Chocolate from Yogurt Park.

Game Nights After some hardcore EECS studies, HKNers like to take a break from mid-terms, projects, and homework and simply play their hearts out on Halo 2, Su-per Smash Bros., DDR, or other video games. Of course, for the more old school, there are always classics like Duck Hunt and Donkey Kong. For the even more old school, games such as Mafia and card games never fail to please.

Aimee Moriwaki and Andrew Ma enjoy their favorite yogurt flavors at Yogurt Park.

Ice Skating HKNers show their skills on the ice twice a year at Berkeley Iceland, a local ice skating rink. While most of us proved to be fairly graceful on the ice (meaning we didn't fall), others had the opportunity experience Newton's laws of motion first hand.

Bowling Strrike! Bowling has always been a favorite during midterm season. Mu Chapter HKNers gather every semester for a friendly game of bowling as a break from their intense studying. Although no one ever gets a perfect game, almost everyone was able to get in a few strikes. After such an intense game of bowl-ing, a trip to Nation's Giant Burgers is a must.

Jelly Belly Factory Tour Whoever said Jelly Bellys were for kids? Mu Chapter HKNers love candy. In fact, we like anything with sugar in it. As such, a tour of the Jelly Belly factory seem perfectly appropri-ate. (Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory was booked.) Some candidates were disappointed when they discovered that the life-sized jelly beans was, in fact, not edible.

HKNers pose for a group picture after a grueling hour of ice skating.

It’s pretty obvious that everyone was satis-fied after two games of bowling.

There’s no such thing as being too enthu-siastic for jelly beans.

Photo Scavenger Hunt A long-standing tradition to Mu Chapter, our semi-annual Photo Scavenger Hunt adds a modern twist to an old game. The two-hour event splits members and candidates into competing teams and sets them loose on the Berkeley campus. Each team is given a set of clues and have to take pictures to match the clues. While the clues are associated with specific locations on the Berkeley campus, the teams often come up with more creative (and hilarious) solutions.

At the end of the hunt, the teams return to a BBQ luncheon and enjoy some nice juicy burgers as the judges look through the pictures to decide a winner. In addition to a “prize,” the winning team gets brag-ging rights for the rest of the semester.

This group attempted to spell out HKN spell in human font.

Who knows how this group interpreted their clue.

VP Mangesh grills up a mean burger.

The winning team members examine their prizes.

    HKNers find themselves — bears.

    The longest conga line ever?

With the many activities that Mu Chapter offers, it can be easy for members to lose sight of the greater whole of HKN. Fortunately, at our general meetings, members, officers, and candidates come together to hear the latest news with respect to the chapter, meet new friends, and catch up with members they don’t normally meet. In addition to the general meetings, the candidates are guided through the initiation process with a candi-date meeting at the beginning of each semester. By the end of the se-mester, the candidates become full-fledged members after the tradi-tional initiation and banquet. The Bridge Committee is especially proud to have provided high-quality, entertaining slideshows at banquet with amazing still scenes and video footage of the past year.

Officer, Candidate, and General Meetings The frequent meetings throughout the semester serve to tie together the offi-cers, members, and candidates of the Mu Chapter.

Weekly Officer Meetings help the officers coordinate with each other. Each committee is able to make their announcements to the rest of officer corps. Through the Officer Meetings, event volunteering, activity suggestions, coordination of duties, and gen-eral communication are conducted in an orderly fash-ion.

Candidates come to the Candidate Meeting to learn about HKN and the requirements needed to become an HKN member. Icebreakers, food, and a active, lively officer presence help excite the candidates for another HKN candidate semester.

Each semester, there are three general meetings where officers, members, and candidates can share a meal together while hearing about the latest events and candidate progress. At every general meeting, a professor from our own EECS department gives a presentation on a topic of his or her choice.

After each Officer Meeting, officers get together and enjoy an interesting dinner.

Candidates patiently listen as the VP talks about the candidate semester.

Candidates and officers gather in a circle to converse while eating dinner.

Officer Elections Each semester, officer elections are held to deter-mine the new officer positions for the following se-mester. The election process takes approximately 6-8 hours to complete, mostly filled with discussions of who would likely make the best officers for certain positions. Potential officers are encouraged to dis-cuss what they plan to do as an officer and how they can improve on the committee or position that they are elected to. The result of the election is an officer corps that is highly dedicated to serving the EECS community and active within HKN.

Officer Retreat The first weekend of school for HKN is spent bonding with other HKN Officers at some remote location. This year, the officers enjoyed their time together at Truckee near Lake Tahoe for both the fall and spring retreat. It is the job of the Activities Committee to plan this weekend-long event, where the officers form strong, personal connections that make for a more enjoyable semester for the entire HKN chapter. Some of the activities that happen during retreat include the never-ending Mafia game, board games, console games, and the annual snow-ball fight during the winter.

The previous VP passes the torch to the new VP.

The Fall 2006 Officer Corps bond over a friendly game of Mafia.

Initiation and Banquet At the end of each semester, Mu Chapter holds an initiation to celebrate, welcome, and officially induct the new members into HKN. Each new member is awarded a certificate of their membership in HKN. After a round of congratulations, photos are taken and everyone heads to a restaurant, usually in San Francisco, to welcome, via a formal banquet, the new additions to the HKN family.

While the banquet is considered formal, the dinner is a fun and light-hearted affair. Awards that praise the excellent work of candidates and officers are given out during the awards ceremony. The main entertain-ment is provided by the Bridge Committee in the form of the slideshow, highlighting the best scenes and footage from the semester. In the spring semes-ter of 2007, the Bridge Committee created a high-quality slideshow made almost entirely of video foot-age rather than from traditional still images. Last fall, the banquet was held at A. Sabella’s in San Francisco, while in the spring, it was held at Neptune’s Palace at Pier 39.

The Fall 2007 candidates await to be initiated.

Officers, members, and new initiates enjoy banquet together.

Want to see more about the activities of Mu Chapter? Our high-quality slideshow can be found on our website along with pictures of our most recent as well as past events at: http://hkn.eecs.berkeley.edu/yearbook/
