M F F . J IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO HAVE A “GOOD HEART” There are many who have a good heart, because it is part of the human condition; being the image and likeness of God; in fact, it should be natural to everyone. Being bad is a consequence of going against one's conscience, it is sin, which could be null or exceptional, but is part of our fallen nature.

Mark 10:18… Why do you call me good? Only god is good. But is having a good heart enough to please God? Is that all that God expects of us? OF COURSE NOT. The Bible is very clear when it tells us: Without faith it is impossible to please God (Hb 11:6). It goes even further, telling us that faith in God is not enough, at least not just any faith: Not everyone who says Lord, Lord will enter the Kingdom of heaven but whoever does the will of my heavenly Father (Matthew 7:21) This is reaffirmed in many other texts and in Scripture gen-erally. God wants our fidelity. The first commandment is to love God above all things and people; so it is not enough to be a good person. There are many who are "good people" and do not have faith, nor do they give God the first place or any place in their life, they live with their backs to God and are on the road to perdition, as Jesus assures us in his word. Wide is the path that leads to damnation and there are many who follow it- narrow is the path to salvation and few find it. Without holiness no one will see the Lord (Hb 12:14) and holiness is in loving God. To love our neighbor not only with human love, but with his divine love; the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Christ is out of the sight and heart of many "good ones”; he is ignored and mistreated by many with "good hearts". A good heart is an ambiguity that could be said even of drug traffickers, murderers, womanizers and all kinds of sinners. Everyone can have love for their own family, for their own, and be very nice and have many virtues, which are not incompatible with serious and deadly sins that sep-arate them from God and from life. If even they can be classified by many as good, how many atheists and sinners are also classified as such? Imagine how many are seen like this, just because they don't kill or steal, although only God sees that, because they steal and kill themselves in the dark so as not to be seen. Nowadays, not even parents can know if their daughters have aborted, and they will be seen as good people. For this reason, it is clear that having a good heart is not enough, it is about being saints, letting God enter life, re-ceiving His word, because He came from heaven, assum-ing our human condition, He lowered himself to death on the cross, to reveal God to us and the way of salvation, yet there are many who continue to ignore and disregard His words and teachings.

M P J NO BASTA CON TENER “BUEN CORAZON”

Muchos son los que tienen buen corazón, pues es parte de la condición humana, de ser imagen y semejanza de Dios; de hecho, debería ser lo natu-ral en todos. Ser malos es consecuencia de ir contra la propia conciencia, del pecado, que debería ser nulo o excepcional, pero es parte de nuestra natu-raleza caída. Marcos 10, 18: …¿Por qué me llamas bueno? Solo Dios es bueno.

Pero ¿es suficiente tener buen corazón para agradar a Dios? ¿es eso todo lo que Dios espera de nosotros? CLARO QUE NO. La biblia es muy clara cuando nos dice: Sin la fe es imposible agradar a Dios (Hbr 11,6). Incluso va más allá, diciéndonos que no es suficiente la fe en Dios, al menos no cualquier fe: No todo el que diga Señor, Señor entrará en el Reino de los cielos sino el que haga la voluntad de mi Padre celestial (Mateo 7,21) Esto viene reafirmado en muchos otros textos y en la ge-neralidad de la Escritura. Dios quiere nuestra fidelidad, el primer mandamiento es amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas y personas, por lo que no basta ser buena persona. Son muchos los que son “buenas personas” y no tienen fe, ni le dan a Dios el primer lugar ni lugar alguno en su vida, vi-ven de espaldas a Dios y están en camino de la perdición, como nos asegura Jesús en su palabra. Ancho es el camino que lleva a la condenación y son muchos los que lo siguen, estrecho es el camino de la salvación y son pocos los que lo encuentran.

Sin santidad nadie vera al Señor (Hbr 12,14) y la santidad está en amar a Dios, para amar al prójimo no solo con amor humano, sino con su amor divino, el fruto del Espíri-tu Santo. Cristo está fuera de la mirada y del corazón de muchas “buenos”, es ignorado incluso maltratado por muchos de “buen corazón”. Buen corazón es una ambigüedad que se podría decir incluso de narcotraficantes, asesinos, mujerie-gos y toda clase de pecadores. Todos pueden tener amor para su propia familia, para los suyos, y ser muy simpáti-cos y tener muchas virtudes, que no son incompatibles con graves y mortales pecados que separan de Dios y de la vida. Si hasta ellos pueden ser catalogados por muchos como buenos, cuantos ateos y pecadores también lo son; imagina cuantos son vistos así, solo porque no matan ni roban, aunque eso solo Dios lo ve, pues se roba y se mata en la oscuridad para no ser visto. Hoy en día ni lo padres pueden saber si sus hijas han abortado, y serán vistas como buenas personas. Por ello es claro que no basta con tener buen corazón, se trata de ser santos, de dejar entrar a Dios en la vida, de recibir su palabra, pues el vino desde el cielo, asumiendo nuestra condición humana se abajó hasta la muerte de cruz, para revelarnos a Dios y el camino de la salvación, y son muchos los que siguen ignorando y haciendo caso omiso a sus palabras y enseñanzas.


ST. ALPHONSUS RODRIGUEZ/SAN ALFONSO RODRIGUEZ October 30th

Born in Spain in 1533, Alphonsus inherited the family textile business at 23. Within the space of three years, his wife, daughter, and mother died; meanwhile, business was poor. Alphonsus stepped back and reas-sessed his life. He sold the business, and with his young son, moved into his sister’s home. There he learned the discipline of prayer and meditation. At the death of his son years later, Alphonsus, almost 40 by then, sought to join the Jesuits. He was not helped by his poor education. He applied twice before being admitted. For 45 years he served as doorkeeper at the Jesuits’ college in Majorca. When not at his post, he was almost always at prayer, though he often encountered difficulties and temptations. His holiness and prayerfulness attracted many to him, including Saint Peter Claver, then a Jes-uit seminarian. Alphonsus’ life as doorkeeper may have been humdrum, but centuries later he caught the attention of poet and fellow-Jesuit Gerard Manley Hopkins, who made him the subject of one of his poems. Alphonsus died in 1617. He is the patron saint of Majorca.

Alphon-sus dio un paso atrás y reevaluó su vi-da. Vendió el negocio y, con su hijo pequeño, se mudó a la casa de su her-mana. Allí aprendió la disciplina de la oración y la meditación.

A la muerte de su hijo años más tarde, Alfonso, que tenía casi 40 años para entonces, buscó unirse a los jesuitas. No le ayudó su mala educa-ción. Solicitó dos veces antes de ser admitido. Durante 45 años se desempeñó como portero en el colegio de los jesuitas en Mallorca. Cuan-do no estaba en su puesto, casi siempre estaba en oración, aunque a menudo encontraba difi-cultades y tentaciones. Su santidad y devoción atrajeron a muchos a él, incluido San Pedro Claver, entonces seminarista jesuita. La vida de Alfonso como portero puede haber sido monótona, pero siglos después llamó la atención del poeta y compañero jesuita Ge-rard Manley Hopkins, quien lo convirtió en el tema de uno de sus poemas. Alfonso murió en 1617. Es el patrón de Mallorca.

and your life. But in reality, sex offenders can be anyone: neighbors, relatives, teachers, friends. Sadly, the sex offender’s skills in deception often hide this reality from us. Predators count on disbelief to hide in plain sight,

often in positions that allow them to choose and groom their victims. It is no accident when we read headlines where people in positions of trust and power are arrested for sex offenses. It is critical to let go of disbelief and

arm ourselves with information to protect our children.
